SSS detains El Rufai at Awka A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Malam Nasir el-Rufai, was in Awka prevented from moving out of his hotel room to monitor the Anambra Governorship Election currently ongoing. el-Rufai said at the `Finotel Hotel’ where he lodged that some armed men of the State Security Service (SSS) restrained him from moving out of the hotel to monitor the election. He said:“I arrived in Awka by 7 p.m. on Friday and had a brief session with the APC candidate, Sen. Chris Ngige. When I came out to have my dinner, I saw three heavily armed SSS officers at the hotel. “I asked them why they were following me; they told me that they were protecting me because Awka is not safe. “I told them that I came with my own security. This morning, as I was about to have breakfast, they blocked the corridor and tried to restrain me from going out but I pushed by and went to the restaurant to eat. “After my breakfast, I will be going to the APC Situation Room in town to monitor the election. I am being unlawfully detained here,’’ he said. One of the SSS men entered the restaurant and confiscated the reporter’s tape recorder and deleted the recorded interview before returning it to her. When contacted on telephone, the Director of SSS in the state, Mr A.U. Okeiyi, confirmed the report, saying that el-Rufai was being protected. “el-Rufai is not an ordinary person. If anything happens to him, they will blame the security,’’ he said. Heavily armed security men were seen guarding the premises of the hotel. (NAN) APGA billboard causes accreditation delay at polling unit at Aguleri Accreditation of voters was delayed in Aguleri on Saturday as INEC officials insited that a billboard of one of the parties in the Anambra governorship election be pulled down. The billboard of the APGA governorship candidate, Mr Willy Obiano, and his running mate, Dr Okeke Chukwukaodinaka, was mounted metres away from the polling unit near the Aguleri roundabout, contrary to electoral laws. INEC regulations do not allow for campaigns or posters of candidates near election grounds 24 hours to the election. INEC adhoc officials who arrived at the polling unit before 8 a.m. for accreditation of voters, insisted that the billboard be dismantled before anything could be done. Similarly, some members of the electorate at the unit protested the presence of the billboard and insisted that it must be brought down. The presiding officer for Unit 004 said that there was no way she could allow the accreditation with the billboard just a few metres from the unit. “This billboard is so conspicous that it is against our mandate as electoral officers. I can only continue with this election when the billboard is dismantled,” she said. She confirmed that those on ground for the accreditation had appealed to her to move the polling unit to a nearby space that would not show the billboard but she had declined. “My reasons are simply because this polling unit is where we registered the voters and I cannot move to another point without superior directive. “I have spoken to my supervisory presiding officer who said I should remain at my assigned unit,” she said. The APGA agent for the unit, Mr Peter Nneli, explianed that the billboard was erected long before the election. “This billboard is not for the purpose of campaign and cannot be easily dismantled,” Nneli said. Accreditation eventually kicked off in the unit at 10.25 a.m, more than two hours behind shedule after the billborad was dismantled by youths from the town. Enemoh Nkechi Oyi 08033727831 PRESS RELEASE – APC alleges strongholds starved of voting materials, decries harassment of el-Rufai 12:30 – The All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised the alarm over the late or non delivery of voting materials to the party’s strongholds during the ongoing Governorship election in Anambra State, describing the action as a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise the party’s supporters and make the election anything but free and fair. In a statement, Saturday, by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party also said early reports from the state indicate a pattern of harassment of its members and the violation of INEC guidelines, among others, asking Nigerians to take note. It specifically decried the continued harassment of its Deputy National Secretary, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai by armed Department of State Services (DSS) personnel, since he arrived at Awka on Friday night for the election. APC said apart from restricting Mallam el-Rufai to the Finotel Hotel where he is staying, the DSS personnel also barged into the hotel’s restaurant while he was eating and collected the phones of everyone there, apparently to prevent their pictures from being taken as they laid a siege on the hotel. ”These DSS personnel claimed to be acting on orders from above. Whoever gave them the order, we in the APC believe it is illegal to prevent a duly accredited top official of a party involved in an election from moving around to monitor the election. He has a right to be at the election as our Deputy National Secretary,” the party said. It also decried a situation in which a polling unit is situated right under the billboard bearing the pictures of APGA candidate Willie Obiano and his running mate in Aguleri, in clear violation of INEC guidelines. APC condemned a situation in which voting materials are being delivered late or not delivered at all to the party’s strongholds, including Idemili North and South, Akwa South, Dunukofia, Onitsha North and South, Orumba North and South, Oyi, Ogbaru and Nnewi North. ”As at the time of issuing this situation report, election materials have not yet arrived at Idemili North and South, Ogidi ward 1, Nkpor ward 1, Abatate, booth 012 of ward 2 Nibo and one booth at umunnakwe hall; There is no INEC or police presence at Obi Ilo Okoye polling unit in Awada, Onitsha; INEC register for 2011 were not brought to Palm Site Market 1&2; INEC is refusing to accredit voters in Awka South LG Ward 8; In Nnwei north Otolo ward 03, polling unit 14, only 6 people out of 77 were accredited and others couldn’t find their name; In Ward 8, Awka Government House, PDP agents are openly soliciting for votes in exchange for money, just as it is happening in Onitsha North Ward 100 and in CKC Adazi Nnukwu, and at Nteje Unit 004 in Oyi LG, APGA and PDP are negotiating how to share votes. ”These are just a few of the examples of the shenanigans going on right under the nose of INEC, and we demand an immediate rectification so that no citizen will be disenfranchised, and so that all the parties will have a level playing ground. If this is not done urgently, the promise of a free, fair and transparent election in Anambra by the President and INEC would have been nothing but a ruse,” APC said. 10:00 – Soldiers have just apprehended two motorcylists in Awka who are carrying their wares apparently going to trade. Some members of the Ezi Umunagu community are helping to set up the table waiting for INEC staff who are yet to arrive. Rowdiness at Ezi Umunagu Square 1 Ward as APGA supporters argue among themselves. As a result, accreditation yet to commence. The Ezi Umuogbu INEC official said there are 674 registered voters but the ward was given 675 sheet in case of error. INEC adhoc staff at Ezi Umuogbu, a youth corps member, Kenneth Nwobu, said the exercise started at exactly 8.10 a.m. 9:00 – Accreditation commences at Ezi Umuogbu Square Ward 005, Awka 8:45 – Ward 1 polling unit, Nkwoide, voters were seated as early as 6:30am.
