Tension In Ugborodo As Navy, Youths Invade Delta Community by rockafela(m): 12:09pm On Nov 24, 2013
DOZENS of persons, including women and children were feared missing in oil-rich Ugborodo community in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State after naval gunboats stormed the Itsekiri community on Friday evening. Several houses, property were allegedly destroyed, with cash worth several millions of naira reportedly carted during the onslaught. It was gathered that four gunboats and two speedboats were deployed in the operation led by an unamed top official of the NNS Delta, Warri Naval Base and some members of the community who allegedly influenced the invasion. It was reliably gathered that the latest tension in the area was allegedly instigated by a committee set up by the state government for the proposed $26bn Export Free Zone and gas city project in the community. One of the aggrieved sources in the troubled community told our reporter on phone yesterday that the trouble was sparked off when they protested the composition of the committee. “A government official gave a directive that we must accept the committee or face consequences. The Information Officer, NNS Delta, Lt. Yohanna, confirmed the incident, but clarified that the troops only moved in to restore sanity after some irate youths attacked and maimed two youths loyal to Chief Emami. Chief Emami could not be reached for comment at the time of this report as calls made to his telephone line could not go through. At the time of this report, it was gathered that scores of angry youths were planning to invade a major oil facility in the area to press for the release of the community leaders.
