APC Claims Enough Evidence For Anambra Poll's Cancellation by UD101(m): 8:37am On Nov 25, 2013
Bouyed by what it considered as substantial evidence of irregularity at the Anambra State’s governorship election of November 16, 2013, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Sunday urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the exercise.

In a statement in Lagos Sunday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC said it “has provided incontrovertible and more than substantial evidence to show that what took place on November 16 is a parody of election.

“What other evidence can be more substantial than the fact that INEC, in conducting the election, failed to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act? What other evidence can be more compelling than the INEC chairman’s admission of compromise by a top official of the commission?

“If Jega’s statement that the election fell short of what the commission had expected and prepared for, what else could be more substantial?”

According to the APC, Idemili North Local Council where an INEC official was said to have been compromised, has over 173,000 registered voters and is Ngige’s stronghold, having scored over 80 per cent of all votes cast there in his senatorial election.

It also contended that the use of Nnamdi Azikiwe University students as presiding officers, instead of trained ad-hoc members of staff, violated INEC guidelines, just as the use of the university members of staff as supervising presiding officers because the APGA running mate was until his nomination a professor in the same institution.

Similarly, the Accord Party (AP) said yesterday that the electoral umpire compromised its position on a free and fair election in the state, adding that it would go to court if INEC continued with its plan for a supplementary election.

According to a statement yesterday by its National Secretary, Samson Isibor, the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Benin City at the weekend was dismayed that INEC could “renege on its avowed responsibility to conduct a transparent poll.”

Meanwhile, the member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Victor Afam Ogene, has explained the low voters’ turnout during the poll, attributing it partly to last year’s flood disaster, which he said, devastated all the riverine areas of the state.

Ogene, who is the Deputy Chairman of House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, contended that many registered voters in the riverine areas, especially in Anambra East and West, Ayamelum, Ogbaru, and Onitsha North and South local councils lost their voter’s cards to the flood and were thus unable to vote during the election.

According to him, the devastation made many eligible voters lose their cards. To that end, he faulted the allegation by some contestants that their supporters were disenfranchised. The lawmaker further described their call for the conduct of a fresh election as “diversionary and unnecessary.”

Ogene maintained that low voters’ turnout could not be a reason for an outright cancellation of the poll because, “in the two most recent state elections in Edo and Ondo in 2012, the turnout were 40 per cent in Edo and 38 per cent in Ondo. (Out of a total registered voters of 1,555,766 in Edo, only 630,099 voted, while in Ondo, 624,659 voters participated, out of 1,638,956 registered voters).

APC is no better than PDP in many ways but if the truth must be told, the Anambra election is a sham and a shame!

APC should keep quiet or go to court..
INEC can't cancel that election, only a court can.

Anambra under APGA is already making genuine and sustainable progress ahead of all of your states. Why not bring Ngige to rule you since you so much believe in him. APC has lost and its permanent.

APGA has come to stay.

I wonder why people are always tribal when it comes to this...why do you look at different parties without the persons involved? ? Na party go lead us abi human beings? Ngige is better than Obiano in all aspects, had I been at home I would hv voted him..it's high time we looked beyond parties and pay more attention to the individuals involved. .
