While the court case between Apple and Samsung is still on, Apple has confirmed what use to be mere speculation. Apple confirmed buying PrimeSense, an Israeli technology company best known for developing gesture control for Microsoft’s Kinect Sensor and it has made strides towards bringing the technology to mobile.
One person familiar with the terms said it had paid $360m. “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” an Apple Spokesperson said.
PrimeSense supplied the Kinect technology used in Microsoft’s Xbox 360, launched in 2010 which allows users full-body interaction with the device without holding anything in their hands. PrimeSense’ Chief Executive; Inon Beracha said the device has sold more than 26m units to date, making it the “most sold computer division device ever”.

Kinect allows people to play video games without needing a joystick, as they control their onscreen character simply by moving their body. It also enables voice or gesture control of television or video, leading some observers to speculate that Apple might use PrimeSense’s technology as part of its own television set which has been rumored to be in development for several years.
PrimeSense’s 3D sensors has a range of up to 3.5metres – about the depth of the typical living room or the sort of distance most people sit from a TV set and were used in the original Microsoft Kinect add-on for Xbox. We know what the original Kinect could do; it could detect faces, movements, people and map them all in 3D space. So what is Apple interested in doing around that?
I guess you won’t be wrong if you say the money Apple realized from Samsung has really paid off. What do you think?
