It’s for selfish, Northern agenda, says Sagay

FROM the Coalition to Save Nigeria (CSN) came Tuesday caution over entrant of some aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the defection should not be taken as victory as their decision to leave the PDP was more for political survival than for ideological affinity.

Also Tuesday, constitutional lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay, condemned the defection and said it would not amount to loss to the PDP.

A statement Tuesday by the President of CSN, Philip Ugbodaga, said though the reported merger would alter the political equation and calculations in Nigeria, especially ahead of the 2015 general elections, Nigerians should not celebrate the merger. “I cannot see the conversion from Saul to Paul in the transmutation of the seven governors from PDP to APC. These seven governors were yesterday part of the PDP that has held down our progress as a nation since our return to civil democratic rule in 1999. I see their move as deceitful and their acceptance by the APC as a huge disappointment and a negation of the principles on which the party was built. It shows very clearly to some of us that our politicians lack principles and are only interested in their political survival rather than the general interest of the suffering masses.”

Ugbodaga said the aggrieved PDP governors had left the governance process prostrate in their respective states since the crisis in their party erupted while “gallivanting round the country in the guise of righting the wrongs in their party.”

According to him, “The most annoying aspect of this charade is the fact that their grievances with their party had nothing to do with the plight of ordinary Nigerians who live in penury despite the huge resources available to our country, who have to generate their own power via generating sets, and who have to send their children to private schools on account of our non-functional and moribund public educational institutions.”

The CSN president queried: “Where were these seven governors when prices of petroleum products were criminally raised in 2012 in a country that is an oil producing nation? What is their position on the mass unemployment, abject poverty, and the unprecedented misery and hopelessness enveloping our country? What is their position on the massive corruption that is threatening the existence of our dear nation? What is their stance on the lack of affordable and efficient healthcare delivery in our country?”

Sagay sounded a note of warning that the defection may be an invitation to trouble into the APC’s camp since the defectors are all nursing personal agenda.

Specifically, Sagay berated the northern governors, saying while the APC is preoccupied with salvaging Nigeria from years of misrule, the motives of the governors, excluding Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, for decamping from the PDP is principally for power to return to the North.

He said: “Concerning the northern governors decamping to the APC, I really don’t think it is a loss to the PDP. If you look at these rebel governors with the exclusion of Amaechi, you will find out that their agenda is a very narrow one, a very personal one. And that agenda is that for the North to produce the president so that a northern man can control the Niger Delta oil and Lagos State Valued Added Tax (VAT) and so on.

“That is all they want, putting their hands in the resources that belongs to other people for the development of their region. They are not concerned about the interest of the nation. So, for me it is not a terrible loss to PDP but a danger to APC.”

Saul used to be an armed robber, he transmuted to Paul who is now a pastor. Any changes? As an armed robber he 'forced' ppl to make 'offerings' wt guns, as a pastor he cons people to part wt their money using 'bible'. Any changes?

Nothing is deceitful in this merger. Birds of same feather flock together. They have everything in common; desperation, corruption, greediness, selfishness.
As for we in PDP we will say good riddance to distraction.
