Reduce rice, bread consumption, Lagos gov’s wife warns residents

Wife of the Lagos State governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, yesterday warned residents of the state to control their intake of bread and rice to avoid being infected by non-communicable diseases, especially hypertension and diabetes.

She said such would also reduce the incidence of breast, cervix and prostate cancers, reiterating the state government’s determination to curtail deaths resulting from terminal diseases.

The governor’s wife spoke yesterday at the Wellness Health Screening programme, where over 100, 000 residents were to be screened for various lifethreatening terminal diseases commenced.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Rauf Aregbesola Primary Health Centre in Mosan Okunola Local Council Development Area, Mrs. Fashola, who called for frequent and timely medical check-ups in order to detect diseases earlier, said she knew of no fewer than six people that had been killed by breast cancer within a month this year alone.

She said, according to medical experts, over concentration of rice and bread and other common heavy food in the body system do more harm than good to the body. She said: “This year alone, I know of at least six people who died of breast cancer. You will just hear the person is dead suddenly.

That is how people, both the old and the young dies. The best thing we can do is to go for regular medical checkup and screening. You now have to stay away from or reduce the consumption of rice and bread. Some people can’t do without rice. Whenever doctors abroad see blacks and Indians, the first medical advice they will give us is to abstain from eating rice and bread.

“If you don’t eat rice and bread in a week, you will also see how your body we look like. So, you must reduce consumption of rice and bread, don’t say because you are in Lagos, you must eat rice or bread.”

She cautioned people to be wary of what they consume and pay attention to themselves more than they do to their property so as to remain healthy, urging them to engage in regular exercises.

On his part, the council Chairman, Mr. Abiodun Mafe, said the rate at which Nigerians die of non-communicable diseases calls for serious concern, calling on all residents to seize the opportunity of the free health screening to do a thorough medical check-up to know their health status.

Good advice indeed. Pls someone help me tell her that her husband in company with others have jerked the price of rice beyond the reach of the common man and bread, thanks to cassava flour is now also over-price.

This can't be emphasized enough. Consumption of high glycemic foods such as white bread and white rice cause more harm than good and so should be avoided by health conscious people. Instead, variants of these foods such as wheat bread and brown rice should be consumed because they have very high nutritional value. Although they aren't as aesthetically appealing as their refined counterparts, their health benefits are innumerable. Talk about prevention and management of diabetes, heart related diseases, weight control, blood sugar control, cholesterol, greatly minimizes the risk of cancer, athritis, boosts the immune system, etc
