PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAWK. For as long as govt can't provide means of livelihood to the people, they have the right to hawk anywhere including the govt house. What will they eat if they didn't hawk? Air? Or are we telling them to sit down idle in hunger? No. Not everyone can watch their kids cry of hunger without doing whatever it takes to feed them. If all the jobless youths are ready to hawk, i will personally lead them and take full responsibility for breaking the useless law that denied people means of survival.

You do realise that many hawkers can afford to rent shops but won't because of greed to sell more goods in traffic and on roads while avoiding rent and tax obligations?

A country where smog regulations are not existing, it is very dangerous to breath those fumes from the exhaust pipes. As one poster commented, why not support those that have set up a shop, they pay taxes that support the community.

Is it only the hawkers that breath dangerous fumes from exhaust pipes? The passersbye, the road side shop owners and other drivers are discriminated upon by the dangerous smog. Abi?

People have the right to survive. In a country with no welfare service whatsoever and the government is not concerned about unemployment, how do you want people to survive. Not everybody can take up militancy and terrorism as a career.

There is no country in the world without some form of street trading, it is only minimal in countries with good welfare package. You can buy cooked sweet corn with butter on the streets of London.

Our leaders and politicians with their "go and die" attitude and their supporters that do not see anything wrong with stopping the only means of livelihood of the poor masses without providing any alternative.

ROSSIKE: You do realise that many hawkers can afford to rent shops but won't because of greed to sell more goods in traffic and on roads while avoiding rent and tax obligations?

No they can't ! Please state any ultra low-cost shop in any state with the price so I will take you seriously. A cursory look at the shoppers', their price of items and where such items are gotten from, and the ultra-modern markets (with high prices that even scares middle-class folks like me) the govt builds show that they cannot afford these shops. Build ultra low-cost shops, and let the public know by huge advert campaigns, carry them along in the process for their input, let the women pay a small token as tax, then use existing relevant ministries to monitor the maintenance of such ULTRA LOW-COST shops in tandem with these traders or hawkers. After securing alternatives, which should deal with roadside trading if they are preferable, you will have a better moral basis to sanction street-trader and hawkers. Implement the model statewide and a considerable drop in roadside trading.

Statements like yours are because you haven't seen or tasted these people's pains, you really haven't, if not you won't write that drivel up there.

Given the odious debt (check Wikipedia) the government owes the populace by means of massive wastage of petrodollars I see no reason why we should pay tax to further encourage the rot in in our governance.

wrong!!!

Most hawkers don't even work for themselves.
They are hired by greedy shop owners who make extra sales by sending them to the streets.

Its a win-win situation....

The seller gains, the owner gains...

But its the sellers who got endangered..

Na lie! Not in this Nigeria would anyone have money to rent a shop yet choose to hawk.

Renting a shop is different from slapping a make-shift kiosk/shanty/table. Some of the hawkers can afford the make shift kiosk(at the risk of being demolished without notice by govt agencies) though.

Which right is that? Govt is not in business of providing your means of livelihood, thats your headache but you do so in an ordered manner.
Hawking is not orderly, its a social trauma.
