We don't have anyone close to Mandela and we won't for a while. Mandela came out of prison and did one term, Obasanjo wanted three. Bamangar Tukur was governor of Gongola state in 1979 but still wouldn't leave. Is it because Tukur loves his people or his pocket? Selflessness is rare in Nigeria, and that's why we can't celebrate our leaders because most of them care only for themselves. And then tribalism is also a huge problem. 1 Like |

We can. If those who are informed enough will participate in the electoral process. We leave voting for the poor, the illiterate and the touts. And the candidates are the corrupt and puppets of the rich and powerful. That we haven't produced a 'leader' doesn't mean that we can't. |

hopilo: Obasanjo was in prison like Mandela, both became president Mandela did not go for second term, Obasanjo did no go for third term. Are they not the same? Kindly read "Long Walk to Freedom", that should teach you not to repeat such an atrocious comparison. 3 Likes |

General Olusegun Obasanjo had all the opportunity on a platter to elevate himself to the level of world greats when he came in a second time, but GREED did not let him. It will take another generation to produce a Mandela-esque figure here. |

They can be hyped. Government will force us to mourn by declaring curfew nation-wide. They will feel the airwave with eulogies, while sycophants and cronies will use the media to bombard our ears and eyes. Headline will be "Father of the Nation is Dead". |

Obasanjo deserves and earns it. He is the nationalist we have ever had in this country. Twice he had placed Nigeria on the path to Democracy. He negotiated the end of the Biafra War. He is instrumental in the professionalization of Nigeria's military thus discouraging further military intervention. At a time when Nigeria was divided along tribal and ethnic lines, Obasanjo worked with Nigerians from the north and east to unite the nation. He ensured justice and equity in political power distribution by introducing a formula that saw an Ijaw man becoming vice president, and later president of the federal republic of Nigeria. The list is endless. curiouslad: Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo had the chance to etch his name forever in the history books of nigeria if not africa |
