STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT
OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY, AGO-IWOYE,OGUN
STATE.
PRESS BRIEFING ON 5th AUGUST, 2014
Gentlemen of the press, fellow students, ladies and
gentlemen, I welcome you all to this press brifing.
This is the third press briefing, we will be calling since
the begining of our agitation for the downward rview of
our union tuition fee. This emanates from our belief that
carrying along the media and informing the general
public is itself a tool for us and also to vitiate any
miscommunication between us that would enable any
propaganda of the Government as they usually does it, to
gain ground.
Gentlemen of the press, it is highly unfortunate that we
have to embark on this (2) two days boycott of lectures.
We believe that having written to the State Government,
we are justifid with our strong premises why there is
urgent need for downward reviw of our tuition fee. We
hoped that Government as progressiv they want us to
believe will set motion in place to reduce our fee. Alas!
This was not so, thus, making the two (2) days boycott
of lectures an imperative one.
The success of the boycott of lectures clearly showed
that indeed, the agitation is not an individual dsire,
orchstrated by the Students' Union nither motivated by
any political actor/actress, rather the demand of the
collective OOUITES whose subjection over the years to
pay this exorbitant tuition fee have been a traumatizing
one.
Gentlemen of the press, to us, it is high time, we remind
His Excellency of his promise of 50% reduction during
his campaign in 2011, but came in and gave us 10%
which to is, is as if nothing was removed. Understanding
that his excellency promisd was oral one, as it lacks
any lgal backing, as some people have been saying.
However, the truth is, a man of intgrity is the one that
stand on his word made, either orally or legally. It
behoves on his excellency to prove to us that he is a
man of his word. Having relaxed enough since almost 4
years of not seeing the fulfillment of the remaining 40%,
we believe it is time to remind the State Government
that we are tired of holding on to promise as we want to
see result now.
Furthermore, as a student of logic, we no see iota of
correlation between the economic reality of Nigeria, and
Ogun State in particular and the current exorbitant fee
we are paying. What is the minimum wage of the State?
What is the per capital income? What is th standard of
living? If the answers to all these questions are nothing
to write home about, how come the lowest fee in
premier state university is 134,000 naira while the
highest is 289,000? What parameters was usd to gt to
that amount? We dare to ask, of the university can
collect the tuition fee by herself, why forcing a contractor
of the pay-on-sales (POS) that is charging 5.5 % per
students on their fee?
Gentlemen of the press, today, hundred of our students
are dropping out of the institution from various level
because they cannot continue to pay such amount as th
fact remains that th economy of th nation is
retrogressing. Unlik decades ago when there were
several Government scholarship to help the indigents,
when there were mechanisms in plac to assist studnts
with fee, where a student can even use his/her bursary
to pay fee. Today, nothing like that, which made this
exorbitant fee to be unjustifiable, wicked and sublime
means to deprive the children from poor home, tietiary
education. Free education at primary, we dare to ask, in
this 21st century, of what use is free education at
primary and no accessibl to tertiary education?
Moreover, our school is the premier State university
which reflected the four region of the State in her
location of campuss, having about 85% children of the
State and being in existence for past 3 decades. It
remains the educational pride of the state with her
product constituting 67% of the Ogun State Civil
Servants, who have been known for excellency and
innovatiness, adding to the socio-economical and
political development of the State. It is lugubrious that
this same university is poorly funded by the State
Government with crumbs of subvertion that coms most
time late. Isn't ridiculous that for almost 4 years of the
existence of this administration, apart from the crumns
of subversion, the only thing that came from the
Government were 2 marcopolo buses. No single project
either library, lectures hall, auditorium, etc can be
credited to the State Government. All ongoing projects
are either from the Education Trust Fund-TETFUND or
the School Managemnt through internally generated
revenue. It is clearly a case of been forgotten by the
State Government.
Gentlemen of the press, permit me to say, that the State
Government should not be considering based on rumour
that they are thinking of reducing fee all Ogun State
institutions using the same parameter and percentage.
One clear factor is that we all cannot b grouped together
as a stratum, since we pay different tuition fee. In
Tasued the highest fee is about 78,000, just like some
polytechnis whereas, here in OOU, the highest is
289,000. For us, each institution reduction should be
based on her peculiarity and fee as anything short of
that will be totally rejected.
Gentlemen of the press, as we end the boycott of
lectures today, we want to use this medium to tell the
State Government that we embark on this (2) two days
of evet to tell them how serious our students are about
downward review of our tuition fee and also how ready
they are to give it what it will takes to achieve our
demands not minding engaging into class-alliance with
any progressive organizations, as this is a destiny issue.
Today's reality is , no tertiary education, no future, as it
is a reality that those with tertiary education are finding
life difficult let alone having no tertiary education, as we
cannot allow the continuous drop-out of our students
because of this obnoxious and outrageous fee. Therefore,
we give the State Government, one week ultimatum,
from 6th of August to 13th of August to see downward
review of our tuition fee, as we have consulted and no
positive response made to us which made us to engage
in the boycott of lectures and we hope with this (7)
seven days, Government, as we want to believe that his
excellency, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, as a man of his would,
who truly want the Ogun Standard for us, as Ogun
Standard is only possible with affordable tertiary
education to Ogun children, we believe that in a week,
positive response should come as we will not hesitate to
occupy Abeokuta if no reduction after the expiration of
the 7 days.
Gentlemen of the press, let me state once again our
demands.
1. Demand review of our tuition fee by the State
Government.
2. Proper funding of the University.
3. Complete the hostel or transfer it to school. Our
students believe that is the solution to our constant
scurity agency harassment and insecurity.
Finally, gentlemen of the press, I want to implore all
OOUITES to resume their academic activities proper
from Wednesday 6th of August, as we prepare for the end
of the 7 days ultimatum if no positive response. Let us
eschew violence as we are responsible and intellectuals
that knows better how to fight for their right without
being unlawful. We appreciate all the media personel
present here, our lecturers and everybody. It is a
collective struggl as we strongly believe that in the face
of exorbitant fee, OOUITES shall be victorious.
Thank you.

GREATEST OOUITES!!!!!!!
Our Position, Our Stand.....
"It was a mistake," you said. But the cruel thing was, it felt like the mistake was Ours for trusting you"..David Levithan.
At this Perilious Junction, having peruxe the Release by the SUG President, Its due Time we make Leadership of The Union realise that we are not slowpoke, neither are we onlookers who has not been part of Struggle at any point in Time and Ways to go about such struggle, A Yoruba adage says" Eni ti ko ba fi ogbon ologbo sogbon, Asiwere eniyan ni..
Fellow OOUITES, On the Verge of the Struggle we have embarked upon, we can see that the Union are Time wasters, and which In time Past as made the Students not to reporse their Trust on Any Union but as the Antecedent of their President, we Think there might be a Change during there Era not knowing they are Bench Warmer Union.
WAY FORWARD
Having Boycott lectures for two days, and Understanding the Fact that we are running a Fast and short Session, I think we should act faster and we have acted faster, we would not have been in this Effortless position. The State Govt Understands Our Language and our Directional Structure but let me put it to us all that they will never do anything until they see the Other side of the Students, but at this Point in time The "NEEDFUL" is "USEFUL".The acclaimed Intellectual,Ideological union are proving Otherwise with The Position of The Union as at This Morning, Because If they can Consult for 2months, they might want to Consolidate for 1month and before we see things for ourself, the semester is Over, and Its on that Note that I want us all to keep pestering the Union to lead us rightly in this Struggle as CDHR as A Commited,Non-Political Organisation is readilly available to make Moves towards the Sucess of this Struggle, And if the Union fails, The SUG Constitution defines the GA(General Assembly), so therefore As a Bonafide Students, we can also call for a GA ourself.. OOUSUG 7 DAYS ULTIMATUM TO THE STATE
GOVERNMENT: OUR STAND
Yesterday, the Student Union held a press
briefing to signal the end of the 2 days lecture
boycott and to announce that it was giving the
state government 7 days to respond and act.
As an organization, while we do not question
the good-heartedness of the Students' Union,
we disagree with the way they have chosen to
pursue it.
We are convinced that a government that is
really committed to listening to the students
and doing what they want does not need a
week to reply; a day or two days are enough. A
week is more than enough to spread lies and
cook up propaganda against the genuine
agitations of students. A week is more than
enough to hurriedly release temporary
examination time table and thereby divide the
rank of students. A week is more than enough
for students to pay up those astronomical fees.
A week is enough to destroy everything we
have worked for, written about and demanded.
Let us not forget that examinations are
scheduled to begin by September and as such,
the examination time table can be released any
time from now. How do you call students out to
challenge injustice when they have been served
with their examination date? What student
wants to be on the street protesting when his
mates are reading for examinations?
At the meeting held with students on Monday in
Mini Campus, we collectively agreed that while
we are not interested in hijacking the
responsibilities of the SUG, the need for action
is very germane at this point. We see no point
in giving the state government 7 days when
they have had 2 months to reply and act and
they have done nothing about it.
As such, beginning from Thursday, 7th August
2014, we call on our students to gather at the
gate of PS by 7:30 am where we will peacefully
demonstrate and call on the Ogun State
Government to either sit up and listen to us or
prepare to entertain us in Oke-Imosan
beginning from next week. Our press release will
be circulated round campus today, while we will
go round classrooms too.
Greatest OOUites, this is just the beginning. Let
us make it clear to anyone that cares to listen
that our agitations are not political. Our
demands are pure and not motivated by any
political party.
PROTEST DETAILS:
Date: Thursday, 7th August 2014
Venue: PS Gate.
Time: 7:30 am
Do not let anyone put fear in your heart. Your
rights to protest peacefully are guaranteed in
the Nigerian constitution. Security agencies
have been contacted, our lawyers are on
standby in case government tries to play funny.
Spread the information. Come one, come all.

COMMITTEE FOR THE DEFENCE OF HUMAN RIGHTS
(CDHR)
OOU SUG APPEAL: OUR STAND
Greatest OOUites,
Today we went round classrooms and lecture halls to
distribute fliers calling out our students for a protest
scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 7th August 2014. Our
decision was based on our conviction that a week is too
long to give the state government if it was really ready
to answer students. That conviction remains
unwavering.
When we set out on our moves, we told students that we
are not interested in hijacking the authority of the SUG
or sabotage their moves. For those who followed our
write-ups and releases closely, we reiterated it over and
over again that our moves are meant to 'force' the union
to act and mount pressure on them to awake to their
responsibilities.
Fellow students, our meeting today with different bodies,
leaders and among ourselves was thorough and ended
tonight. At this juncture, with the facts we have, with the
appeals and with the promises exacted, we are left with
no option but to suspend the peaceful demonstration
scheduled to hold tomorrow.
Greatest OOUites, we didn't suspend this protest
because we are cowards, we didn't suspend this protest
because we have been bought, we didn't suspend this
protest for fear of victimization. When we called out
students to come out confidently, it was because we
knew we had a fall back position, support and no holes in
our ranks. Those who know us well know that while
planning this demonstration, we were prepared to be
arrested, detained or brutalized for the sake of this
struggle. What we won't want is for our students to be
subjected to such fate. The information we have makes
it clear that the lives of our students are endangered if
we go ahead with the protest.
Greatest Nigerian students, this suspension is as painful
and perhaps even more painful to us as an organization
because of the energy, time and money that has been
put in to make this a success. We appeal to all students
for the inconveniences, and appeal to them to give the
SUG a chance till monday, IF BY MONDAY THEY FAIL TO
CALL A GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND CDHR FAILS TO LOCK
DOWN THE SCHOOL GATE, THEN ALL STUDENTS ARE
FREE TO STONE US AND ABUSE US AS TRAITORS
ANYWHERE THEY SEE US.
Once again, this suspension is for the greater good, we
do not want any of our students to be wounded or killed
tomorrow, we do not want the state to think we are
disunited and we hope our students can see it. WE HAVE
COLLECTED NO MONEY, OUR VOICE HASN'T BEEN
BOUGHT AND OUR ORGANIZATION REMAINS
COMMITTED TO THIS REDUCTION.
WE ASSURE ALL OOUITES THAT THIS REDUCTION IS
POSSIBLE AND WILL DEFINITELY BE ACHIEVED. THE DAY
WE SAY OTHERWISE, STONE US TO DEATH

OUR POSITION;OUR STAND..OOUSUG BOWS TO CDHR OOU CHAPTER. Alutarian greetings to all and sundry, Cdhr Oou being a Non-Political and a Renowned Ideological Organisation, deem it fit to announce to all OOUITES that we are Very sorry for our Stand as regards the release of The OOUSUG, with Utmost sense of Honesty and Modesty, the Leadership of the OOUSUG came to us and then Bow to our Order as regards the Proposed Peaceful Demonstration(Protest), but its quite Imperative that we understand ourself so as to Win this battle, as we can only do that Collectively and The OOUSUG President(Socialist) has also called for a GA(General Assembly) which is to hold on Monday(11th of August 2014) But Saccrosacntly, The CDHROOU will not take this Issue with Levity if the OOUSUG fails in there Promise, And as our Leadership has been reiterating it, We will take over this struggle if they again fail us, as they have failed us in time past.CDHROOU still remain Committed in the Struggle for#ReductioninSchFees, and will not take any Cowardice action in Our Resolution if by Monday SUG Fails Again..

"FASHOLA REVERTS LASU SCHOOL FEES TO N25,000.
He made this announcement at the university
convocation ceremony about an hour ago."
If anybody tells you that the reduction of OOU fees is an
impossible task, tell him in Oshiomole's voice to "go and
die." It is fully possible.
While we apologize for suspending the peaceful protest
scheduled to hold today, we assure OOUites that as an
organization, we will only take a step that is the best for
our students, we will not say because we are trying to
save face, have information about danger to the lives of
OOUites and still allow them to come out for protest.
We went round classrooms and lecture halls to apologise
to OOU students and to assure them of our commitment
to seeing this struggle through. Since the SUG has
announced that a GA will be held on Monday, at personal
risks to our lives, we will ensure it holds. If by then, the
state is yet to effect the reduction, the GA will take a
binding position that will shock the state and its
elements.
Let us remain dogged and have no doubts whatsoever in
our sincerity in seeing this reduction issue through.
Those we are fighting want us divided, and we will only
play into their hands if we allow division amongst us.
Remember, in unity lies our strength.
