When did Borno became Part Of The Middle Belt Not North! by Nobody: 8:06am On Jan 09, 2014 |
I was just searching for kinda tinZ, then I found this on wikipedia http://www.google.com/url?q=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_Belt&sa=U&ei=5UfOUoK2Gsi_0QWG0oCYBQ&ved=0CCgQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNHqEe7Iinxk8F3B9fqhCP17qW5b-Q TheMiddle Beltis a human geographical term designating the region of central Nigeria populated largely by minority ethnic groups and stretching across the country longitudinally. The Middle Belt is indeterminate in that it lacks designated"borders"and is charactized by a heterogeneity and diversity of peoples and cultures. The eminence of manifold minority groups to some degree constitutes anethno-linguisticbarrier in the country, drawing a separation between the principally Islamic North and the more secular, Christian/animistsouth. The region is a convergence of these cultural domains and maintains a tremendous degree of ethno-linguistic diversity, with languages of the Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan, and Niger–Congo families, three of the primaryAfrican language groups, all being spoken. Minorities in Nigeria tend to be dominated by the three largest ethnic groups, the Hausa of North and the Igbo and Yoruba of the South; the result in the Middle Belt is occasional political unity and solidarity amongst these highly differentiated peoples, an example being the United Middle Belt Congressthat emerged following Nigeria's independence fromBritainin 1960. Areas of Nigeria which are generally referred to as belonging to the Middle Belt are: Kwara State, Kogi State, Benue State, Plateau State, Nasarawa State, Niger State, Taraba State, Adamawa State as well as the southern parts of Kaduna State, Kebbi State, Bauchi State, Gombe State, Yobe State, and Borno State. However, the definition of the Middle Belt areas are subject to great debate due to the presence of significant number of ethnic Hausa,Fulani and Kanuri groups. In addition, the Yoruba of Kwaraand Kogiave a strong affinity with the larger Yoruba body and frequently prefer not to be associated with the Middle Belt identity. The question is, if Nigeria is to be divided, will states like Gombe, Borno, Bauchi, Adamawa, Kaduna etc. agree to be in the middle belt?? Well in my view, the only state that should be in middle belt are: Kwara state; Kogi state; Benue state; Southern parts of Nasarawa and Taraba state. Yes only those state should be considered as middle belt 2 Shares

Even if the entire world is in the middle belt, Kaduna State is not in the middle belt. Wikipedia mistake fixed. |

The truth is when people use the term middle belt they simply mean christian minorities living in the North, not a geographical place, but a political mobilization tool used to mobilize diverse tribes into a single entity- a solid christian political formation. Hence, Bitrus from sokoto is considered to be from the middle belt than umaru from Niger or sumaila from kogi. In short, this follows the general trend of divisive politics in nigeria that rather than build bridges, build huge fortresses. Wikipedia is right, the term really has no relevance to the geography. |
