What kind of preventative measures did you have in mind? Care to share some?

Its not the same for everybody.
My daughter takes her pillow to peoples house if she is going to sleep over.
She dose not sit on grass she takes a blanket out with her.
And if she dose she will also wash her hair.
I have taken carpet and curtins out of her room and all unnecessary dust collectors.

Someone just mentioned the use of a special inhaler called - fluxotine. You could consult with your medical adviser.

The major thing is to know what and what triggers it.
I was a very active sport person in school even with asthma!

But has far as you can tell when the symptoms shows up so do away with the cause or take you medication.
Dont wait till its a full blow crisis,

greatest prevention ia to keep your medication close and have back ups!

i used to be asthmatic but i ve lived without an attack for 2years now.i think the best thing is to know what triggers your attack and make sure you avoid it.i keep warm cos mine is caused by cold and also make sure you ve multiple medications on you all the time cos i nearly died when my new inhaler failed i had used it 2 days b4 and i had a serious attack when my inhaler refused to clear my airpipes,it was scary i tell you,i thought i was going to die but i had to wait for about 20mins for my sister to go get another inhaler,it was terrible, my sisters were crying thinking she going to die b4 an inhaler comes but am alive and grateful.so now i just pray to God i don't ve an attack and its being two years and counting.

I'm Asthmatic. I inherited it from my Dad.My Grandmum used native herbs to cure my Dad's asthma and forgot the formular. I grew out of asthma when I grew up in UK. I gradually got asthma again when I relocated to Nigeria and nearly died from one attack,a pharmacist gave me an intravenous injection-cortisone to save me when I was stranded in Lagos.

I used Asthamanol and Ventolin Tablets/Syrup to control the Asthma. When I returned to the UK and registered with my GP he seized my (Nigerian) Asthmanol drugs and said they contained banned substances. During my last attack in 2004 the ambulance  came when I nearly was breathless and took me to Kings College Hospital and I was placed with an Oxygen mask and given Oxygen and Nebuliser. They couldnt bring the attack under control so I was administered with Steroids which neutralised the asthma. The steriods worked better than Viagra for me,double-strength,man.

I usually hop around London with my Brown and Blue inhalers  (Becotide and Salbutomol).Asthma has been added to the Disability Discrimination Act in UK as a disability and as a result I stopped wearing my tie to work under the genuine pretext of being an asthma patient.

you can talk to your doctor for classification of your asthma, based on severe persistent, moderate persistent, mild persistent and mild intermittent.you use what is known as a peak flow meter or spirometer. based on the type of asthma you have, you can develope a plan with your doctor to control your astma. learn your triggers and how to avoid them. learn signs of an attack--- cough( night time), difficulty breathing, chest
is tight, headache, drop in peak flow numbers, wheezing, breathing fast, itchy watery eyes, change in face colour.remember to use your asthma medicines correctly for good control. you can live a normal life when youcontrol your asthma.

As someone said, prevention is THE keyword. Secondly, use the power of the internet to educate yourself about happenings in the field of asthma and latest findings out there. I personally don't have a lot of faith in Nigerian doctors, not because of the individual, but more of the "system" that trained them. The health care system is criminally terrible, so I would always seek a second independent opinion about any health issue, not just asthma.

IMAGINE yourself in a swimming pool, sitting at d bottom: That is how an ASTHMA attack feeling when it hits.
The person will be "drowning" in his/her own mucous secretions.

It is VERY important NOT TO PANIC during an asthmatic attack. You must not get frightened or PANIC, because you have to be in control to some extent, at least until help arrives.

Basically, it begins with the person being exposed to an "allergen", that is the stuff that starts (or triggers) the attack. These allergen are usually invisible to the eyes and atimes odourless. But could include Cigerette smoke, frying palm oil, heavy smoke, heavy odours, chemical odours, dusts, lying on the rug-carpets, moulds on the wall, damp walls (that flake off paints), some types of blankets, feathers, poultry-house, dogs, cats, pets, cold-things, dusty-curtains, etc.

Atimes heavy exercise can cause the attack.

Also note that when you are about choking with water, or food (for people that like talking when eating), and things go down the air-way and you try to forcefully cough out the water or food, you may irritate the air-way such that an attack may come up later. So you have to lightly cough out the water or food until it clears.

There are many medications now available to manage/control asthma. Your pharmacist, doctor or healthcare provider will advise you on what will best suit you.

There are also "Breathing Exercises" usually introduced and demonstrated by a PHYSIOTHERAPIST. This will help you moderate your breathing during an asthmatic crisis.
Usually, we breathe with our chest muscles, the ribs and to some extent the diaphragm (muscle under the lungs but above your liver & stomach).

But when an acute (intense) attack sets in, the muscles of the chest may get overworked and atimes they will not respond. This is where the Breathing exercise comes in; and it allows you to breath using your Diaphragm and the front stomach/abdominal muscles.

This pattern can help you get air into your lungs, until the attack gradually eases off, or till when medical help arrives.
In some instances, even aver the Intravenous injection, you still have to moderate the breathing exercises to gain good air control.

Remember, always carry your inhaler and DONT PANICK!
And in most cases, the attack gives you a sign, that is to say YOU know when it's coming.

Laughing too hard can be a source of problem too, so laugh gently or just GRIN grin (enough teeth)
Nose bleeding might be because of harsh weather (harmattan, dusty), hence the mucous that naturally protects nose membrane dries up, and so bleeding starts. I think applying a light film of Vaseline (or other pure petroleum jelly) in the nostrils in such harsh weather can lubricate the nose and minimize the bleeding.
Stay healthy.

Re: Asthma Patients. How Do You Make Your Life Bearable? by Nobody: 1:57am On Apr 20, 2007
FcεRI blockers are the most effective asthma therapeutics.
These receptors found on mast cells and eosinophils bind IgE antibodies produced by B cells in response to allergic TH2 responses
Blocking the FcεRI receptors prevent IgE from binding to inflammatory cells in the lungs.

One caveat . . . these drugs are new and VERY expensive, but for those who can afford them. . . wave goodbye to asthma so long as you follow the prescription. The drugs are usually given as an injection once in a few months or so.

How expensive? Is it available in Nigeria?
Re: Asthma Patients. How Do You Make Your Life Bearable? by Nobody: 3:34am On Apr 21, 2007
I'm not sure how expensive but it is doubtful if you would get it in Nigeria. It's a relatively new therapy most of the asthma therapy websites dont even talk about it. I only came across it during an asthma class last fall.

I notice some people got a relief from asthma when they relocated to temperate regions. I have the same experience. Interesting !!!
