That is an excellent point you made there. If our schools are not good (as they are obviously implying), how is it our
first degree products are able to stand toe to toe with others in top rated western universities ?

There is a friend of a friend of mine who finished at Lautech (Oyo state univ) and aced his Msc and PhD in Canada.
Re: World Top 500 University Ranking - 2008 by CyberG: 5:49am On Feb 27, 2009

Commenting on the ranking, Professor Isaac Adeyemi, Vice Chancellor, Bells University, Ota, said there was no Nigerian university on the top 500 list because the assessors did not have access to information about the Nigerian universities.

According to him, “Most of the information used in assessing universities were sourced on the website of these universities but many Nigerian universities do not have reliable websites. This is why the National Universities Commission is considering compelling Nigerian universities to have good websites. I am sure very soon, the poor ranking of Nigerian universities will become a thing of the past because nearly all the universities are trying to improve on the quality of their websites. “

The comment about schools being rated based on websites is very misleading or this man is just being mischievous! It doesn't matter how many websites that are built and how "good" they look, does the professor think we (or the ranking agencies) will be fooled?

Having schooled in Naija (Ife) and one of the top-rated schools in Canada, the difference in the quality of education is like day and night! I won't bother to make any exhaustive list but the difference in the facilities, research, equipment, funding and scholarship, mentoring is unbelievable! The only thing no one would ever argue is that Nigerians are really bright and in spite of the obvious lack of a lot of facilities back home, we still dey roll tight on this side!  cool cool (sometimes, he no dey easy though, lol) grin

Re: World Top 500 University Ranking - 2008 by AmakaOne(f): 9:05am On Feb 27, 2009
Two African universities have slipped from the top 500 identified by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, leaving only three - the universities of Cape Town, the Witwatersrand and KwaZulu-Natal - in the elite global list for 2008. South Africa follows Ireland into 25th place in terms of percentage distribution of top universities by country, ahead of Europe's Greece, Hungary, Poland and Portugal as well as India.

Cairo University, which was ranked in the Top 500 last year, is nowhere to be seen in the 2008 list of the respected global ranking, produced by the Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jaio Tong University for the government of China. The University of Pretoria - previously ranked around in the 400 to 500 category, has also disappeared - probably pushed out by the rise of universities in China.

With three of 23 public universities in the Top 500, South Africa has 13% of its institutions represented, and together the three institutions enrol around 85,000 students.

The University of Cape Town is ranked half way down the Top 500, in the 200 to 300 category. In that same group are the universities of Bologna in Italy, Bordeaux 1 in France, Calgary in Canada, Computense in Portugal, Dusseldorf in Germany and Dundee in the UK.

The University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, was placed in the top 300 to 400 universities - the same categories of the universities of Ulm in Germany, Valencia in Spain, Warsaw in Poland, Wollongon in Australia, Vrije University Brussels and Waseda in Japan.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal held its position in the top 400 to 500 of the world's universities, in the same group as universities such as Jyvaskyla and Kuopio in Finland, the University of Kansas Medical Center in the US, Lille 1 in France, the University of Lisbon and Slovenia's Ljubljani University.

I like this point. Very true. I know a number of Nigerian graduates that have set records in Imperial.

It does not however validate that our ivory towers should be left to deteriorate more than it is right now, but it creates an anecdote that it is brains who make these glorious ivory towers flourish. Does Nigeria have these brains? YES! But sadly, Nigeria is losing them in their thousands everyday

Jarus, I hope set records does not mean attending and finishing the course o? I hope not even getting distinctions o?

Setting records is doing something exceptional that has not been done before and I am surely not getting any underground (or overground) gists that some Nigerians are doing this in any of the top universities.

As far as I am concerned, they come, do their course, finish like most other students. They are not seen in any way as the cream of the crop types in my view.

I don't need to go back to school as I went to one that developed my thinking well to a higher standard than you. It also gave me an insight into free speech but heightens my observance that free speech in entirety gives birth to free moronity.

And you are a classic case study for that.

LIFE IN MALAYSIA

Hello brethren,

are u interested in coming to Malaysia if YES u must be aware of certain things which am a living witness, and am using this medium to send my warnings back to those Nigerians who are interested in coming to Malaysia for study as a means of escaping from naija, there are a lot of Malaysia - Naija agents trafficking a lot of INNOCENT Nigerians to Malaysia, which of course they are only interested in their profits as an agent after ur arrival in Malaysia, without realizing the pains they are causing for the innocents Nigerians, a school particularly is what am referring to, their school website is http://rima.edu.my, with this school, u can leave for naija to Malaysia in less than 30days if u really want to leave naija but the truth is that there is nothing here for blacks, no work, just nothing, the only good thing here is that, the system here works unlike naija, so is a matter of choice saying, ONLY the strong survive here, if u have a good business u are sure of doing down here or any very good legit online business, u have a chance of surviving here without stress, if u really don't have a good means of getting funds here, it's advisable for u to remain in naija, cuz in Malaysia could sometime look like a living hell if u don't have means of funds, hello my fellow nairalands, please if u know any body who is planning such trip like this, please help me to pass this information to such person bcuz that person may be the next victim, a word is enough for the wise, am only sharing my experience bcuz i don't want any innocent Nigerians to fall victim of this anymore, cuz i keep seeing a lot of Nigerians still keeping coming and still complaining of same experience, like i said, a word is truly enough for the wise, best of luck,
