Islamic body issues Fatwa on man with over 80 wives

JAMA'TU Nasril Islam (JNI), the highest Moslem body in northern Nigeria, has passed a death verdict (Fatwa) on Muhammadu Bello Masaba, a resident of Bida in Niger State for having married 80 wives, which was said to be contrary to the religion.

In a statement from its secretariat in Kaduna, the body pointed out that unless Masaba repented within four days and only four wives from the horde, he remained condemned to death according to Sharia law.

The Central Fatwa Committee of the JNI, in the statement signed by its chairman, Sheikh Usman Abubakar Babatunde and Secretary-General Abdulkarim Mu'azu, said that any Moslem who married more than the approved number of wives at a time either by mistake or out of ignorance is instructed to choose but only four and ask for Allah's forgiveness.

Sheikh Babatunde argued that the convict challenged any Moslem scholar who has any order within the Quranic context that restricted marriage to only four wives, but said that "he would wish to also know that there is punishment that Allah (S.W.T) has prepared here in this world or hereafter for any Moslem who has transgressed this boundary to have married more than four wives".

He added: "Though Masaba gave his reference from the Holy Quran Suratun Nisa'i in which Allah says women of your choice, two or three or four, vividly he is absolutely ignorant of the proper meaning of this verse according to the Standing Fatwa Committee of JNI.

"The authentic Islamic scholars had confirmed this same verse as the verse which restricted the number of wives not to be more than four. This is due to the fact that it is only scholars/ jurists who have technical know-how of the verse in question and they alone would handle it".

But northern civil rights coalition leader and chairman, Socialists Front, Malam Shehu Sani, condemned the decision of the Fatwa Committee of JNI which passed the death sentence on Masaba.

According to him, it is hypocritical for the committee to shut its eyes away from the actions of emirs and other leaders in the north that marry more than the prescribed number of wives by the holy book (Quran), but sentence Malam Masaba to death.

Sani said: "The decision stands condemned. This is a society where we have emirs that marry more than four wives, including uncountable concubines. The same applies to our other leaders here. Why victimize Masaba by passing Fatwa on him? We will not accept it."

Sani added that instead of the JNI to address the socio-economic problems in the society created by the leaders in the North, "they are trying to chase shadow."

However, I will comment as it is true, at least because I know how Northern leaders work out their called Islamic law (Sharia) and how they turned it out to be just a political tool while they are out of control, moreover against Islam and its law itself.

In Islam, the penalty of death is applicable only in one case, committing murder.

There is nothing like killing someone for any other crimes even for committing adultery.

This is about that funny statement. On the other hand, that organization, whatever its name has no power in any law to convict anyone for any crime. It is just mess that gives them the opportunity to claim that. No one, whoever he is, has the right to replace the normal authorities in the society, The Legislature, The Judiciary, and the elected Executive power.

On the other hand, against false hearsay and misinformation, Islam restricts marriage to more than one wife unless in very restricted and particular cases.

Quran is the only religious scripture in the world that says 'marry only one' Quran is the only religious book, on the face of this earth, that contains the phrase 'marry only one'. There is no other religious book that instructs men to have only one wife. It was only later, that the Hindu priests and the Christian Church restricted the number of wives to one, not according to scriptures but to civil development conclusions.

Talking seriously, a wife doesnt mean just a sack to collect sperm, you have to share all her life and the same to her. So, try to imagine someone is sharing 80 lives he must be mindless or senseless Any one loves his wife and fears God will be faithful to her as she is supposed to be

For you to know better, since you are ignorant about the Marriages of the Prophet (AS), why its more than 4 for everyone, read Surah Azhab and see that Allah does not stop any muslim from marrying even almost to death bead, but thats not what happened with Muhammad! There's a difference in doing what the Prophet did and what he told us to do. There were certain commands from Allah that only he had to do.

For more example, the other one which I can think of now is Qiyaam Al-Layl (The Prayer during the 3rd half of the Night). Prophet Muhammad was obliged to offer it every night but for his Ummah it is not an obligation but a Sunnah. And we don't have to offer it every night.

the prophet (AS) fasted ramadhan like a do loop, day turning into night, and night turning into day, etc, without food, and this is not permissable for any muslim! He made night prayers (Quyamullail/tahajjud) everyday and no muslim can do that, while a muslim can marry people of the books, while they remain in their religions, it is not permissable for Muhammad (AS).

So if she is married now, by your account she will have 2 current husbands; an ex, (me) and the current husband whom she shares the household with! Then we should imagine a woman having three husband, if the divorced from the first, and the second is dead and with a current one. But it will be interesting if she is unmarried just from the last, having 3 husbands, but none she shares the household with.
