Tara Carlos. Endless threats from Leo gives me sleepless Nights. He threatens to show up one day at Aunt Trisha's place one day and he promised to wreck the 'fake Image I'm trying to build'. Aunt Trisha who is a member of a catholic church will forever despise me when she finds out about my waywardness. I owe her a lot especially when she is responsible for catering for me while at school. Anyways, I still have to narrate that eventful day when I came back from Leo's place empty handed. Was Aunt Trisha mad when she learnt about what happened. I mean what I told her had happened. "What do you mean by that? That the girl travelled out of town without telling you where is off to? She should have called you to get your things first before travelling." Aunt Trisha raged. "It's not her fault really. I was told her grandmother had an accident so she had to travel to her hometown in a hurry. She must have been really disturbed." I lied fluently. When Aunt Trisha heard the accident part, she softened a bit. "Have you called her? You should know when she should be back." "I have tried reaching her on phone but it is just not going through." "That means we need to get you some things tomorrow. You can't wait until God-knows-when before you resume. I think you'll be resuming next week right?" "No. I don't think I'll resume next week. The school wouldn't be bubbling with activities until after two weeks." I said still wondering what awaits me back at the hostel. A angry looking Aishat. A very mad Jolade and an aggressively annoyed Cynthia. "Oh. Okay then. If you say so." After our well planned and devised conversation, we started to clean the house, cook different meals in preparation for the arrival of Aunt Trisha's fiance who would be here around evening. Before the hands of the wall clock clocks five, the odour of different types of dish could be perceived by our next door neighbour. The meal was palatable to sight and in taste too. Aunt Trisha appointed me to do the general cooking while she did other things aside cooking. "David would certainly love this. Your culinary skills is simply marvelous Tara" she said after taking a bite at the roasted chicken. Immediately after setting he table, Aunt Trisha shot a grateful smile at me and it was then I realised this new fiance of hers means so much to her. Just as I was told by mum, Aunt Trisha had failed relationship twice. Her bride's groom died a week to her wedding when she was 26. She got into another relationship when she was 28 and it came as a blow to her when her fiance was arrested as an internet fraudster during her introduction ceremony. I think she wants to give it all it takes to make her relationship with David work. She is not getting any younger. Being 31 years old without a husband will turn one into an item of mockery for waiting jesters. I helped her with her dress selection and with the application of cosmetics after she took her bath. She looked superfluously sweet in a green strapless gown. I didn't dress gallantly like she did. I don't have to outshine the hostess herself so I had to put on a simple green cotton blouse and a jeans skirt. I allowed my all back braids to fall on my shoulder and I applied a little gloss on my lips. We discussed trivia issues as we wait for the August visitor. I knew Aunt Trisha wasn't really into our conversation because she kept glancing at the door at intervals. She only acknowledge my words with nods to indicate she understands all I was saying. David arrived twenty minutes past 6 and Aunt Trisha went to welcome him with hugs. ************* He was nothing like what I was expecting. I was expecting a devoted Christian both in looks and in speech just like Aunt Trisha but he looks nothing like that. He looks like one of those guys that love partying a lot. His hairstyle was one of those crazy hairstyle I had seen on TV once. He spoke with an air of authority and his voice was rather seductive. He is in his mid 30's and well, I have to admit, really handsome too. As in super-star-like handsome. "Tara, meet my fiance David. David, Tara." "Hi" I said bowing a little to show respect the African way but he extended his left hand which I shook reluctantly. "You've got a nice name and a pretty face too." He beamed at me and didn't let go of my hand until I had to squeeze it forcefully off his grip. We sat down some minutes later and Aunt Trisha led us in prayer while we followed suit with amen when needs be. It was a few and brief message to God because we started eating 10 minutes later. "Wow! This is certainly the best meal I've ever tasted!" David exclaimed after taking a spoonful. "Really?" Aunt Trisha's face brightened. "Yeah. You prepared it right?" "Nah. It was all thanks to Tara. She did the cooking." Aunt Trisha replied and I felt my face flush. "Oh dear. You really are a good cook. Trisha, you had better tie your aprons tighter before Tara snatches your husband from you." He said jokingly and winked at Aunt Trisha but it was no Joke to Aunt Trisha because the smile on her face disappeared and it was replaced by a frown. She began picking at her food. David asked me questions about my family and my education. He told me Aunt Tasha told him about my Dad and he feels really sorry. I was careful how I replied his questions as I tried to avoid Aunt Trisha's piercing stare. She didn't utter a word or contribute to our conversation until David drew out his contact card and gave it to me telling me to contact him whenever I need help. "David." Aunt Trisha called her stare intense on her fiance's face. "Yes sweetheart." "Why did you give Tara your contact card." "I wish to help her that's why. Have you got any problem with that?" "Not really but I don't think that's enough excuse to give her your contact card." "She just told me about her dad and the situation she is in and I feel like I should help her." "And who told you I'm not helping her already? I've got this covered. You are not in any position to offer help" "Wait..." David paused dramatically. "Are you jealous?" He asked feeling irritated. "Hell no!!... I am not, I am just asking you questions..." Aunt Trisha never realised she could be heard on the next street. "Ehemehm.."I cleared my throat to get their attention and it worked because they went back to their meal even though both picked at it. The rest of the minutes was spent in silence until David rose and gave Aunt Trisha a peck which she didn't respond to. He waved at me and I waved back before he finally left. Immediately we heard his car zoomed out of the compound... "Where is the card David gave you?" Aunt Trisha demanded viciously and I handed the card to her with shaky hands. She tore it aggressively into tiny bits and I was speechless. "You know what? Get rid of that hair of yours by hiding it under one scarf or you can shave it off and that blouse looks ridiculous on you. You had better changed it. You don't have to flirt with my fiance with your pitiful condition or the clothes you wear..." She left for her room, grumbling to herself, and slamming her door hard behind her. I stood rooted to a spot. Dumb founded... |
