Totally unrelated news but I like when this happens.

Watford Star Odion Ighalo Is Better Than Messi And Ronaldo In 2015

Statistically, Odion Ighalo is better than Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and Real Madrid icon Ronaldo in 2015.

The Watford striker has notched 13 league goals since the start of this year, more than any other footballer playing in England and the top divisions in Germany, Italy and Spain.

Messi and Ronaldo have netted 13 La Liga goals between them this year, the same number Odion Ighalo has scored for The Hornets.

According to Watford Observer, the former Nigeria youth international has averaged a goal in every 77 minutes.

The 25 - year - old is the second leading marksman in the Championship with 17 goals.

EDITORIAL: Formidable Flying Eagles for AYC

Despite missing several of Nigeria’s brightest prospects, the Flying Eagles will be expected to mount a great challenge at next month’s African Youth Championship in Senegal.

Manchester City blocked Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidiebere Nwakali, Belgian club Genk also refused to release defender Wilfred Ndidi and Granada have held on to Isaac Success because the AYC is not on the FIFA calendar.

Tottenham Hotspur youth star Musa Yahaya was also ruled out of the competition after he suffered a knee injury in a recent test game.

However, it is to the credit of the Manu Garba-led technical crew that they have worked mostly with players based at home while foreseeing the possibility that foreign clubs will refuse to release players for the AYC.

And despite the absence of Iheanacho and others, the Nigeria U20s will enjoy continuity from the U17 World Cup-winning team of two years ago as eight players from that feat made the final cut – Sunday Alampasu, Musa Muhamed, Zaharadeen Bello, Samuel Okon, Akinjide Idowu, Abdullahi Alfa, Chidera Ezeh and Taiwo Awoniyi.

Others like Izu Omego, Mustapha Abdullahi, Ifeanyi Matthew, Bernard Bulbwa and Ibrahim Alhassan ‘Muazam’ were also in the setup of the U17s Class of 2013.

The team have equally unearthed some raw diamonds who are poised to shine in Senegal – goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo, midfielders Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and Obinna Nwobodo as well as Kwara Football Academy youngster Wasiu Jimoh.

Expectations are high that the Junior Eagles could now go all the way to clinch a seventh AYC for Nigeria in Senegal after heart-warming results in their build-up to the tournament.

They won in style an expanded Super 4 tournament involving the country’s top four clubs, before they played two warm-up games against perennial rivals Ghana, winning one and drawing the other.

The Flying Eagles play as a team with the fullbacks bombing up front to create or even score goals.

They are known to create numerous chances thanks to robust style of play and now the inclusion of Dolphins new signing Christian Pyagbara in attack could help them put away more of these openings.

Pyagbara played as a winger at both the 2013 AYC and FIFA U20 World Cup in Turkey, but he has now been moved to lead the attack with telling effect.

He featured at last year’s CHAN in South Africa and scored 14 goals in the league for Sharks.

The Flying Eagles are drawn in the tougher looking Group A along with hosts Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire and Congo.

The result of their opening game against Senegal in Dakar on March 8 will go a long way to define their campaign.

Coach Manu said the target is to qualify for the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand as African champions.

Flying Eagles final AYC squad:

Goalkeepers: Joshua Enaholo, Sunday Alampasu, Olorunleke Ojo

Defenders: Musa Muhamed, Zaharadeen Bello, Izu Omego, Mustapha Abdullahi, Samuel Okon, Abdulganiyu Saheed

Midfielders:Ifeanyi Matthew, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Akinjide Idowu, Obinna Nwobodo, Bernard Bulbwa, Abdullahi Alfa

Strikers: Taiwo Awoniyi, Christian Pyagbara, Abdullahi Ibrahim Alhassan ‘Muazam’, Usman Saleh, Chidera Ezeh, Wasiu Jimoh

Barcelona Youngster Balogun Now Ready For Flying Eagles

Barcelona midfielder Boluwatife Balogun has thrown his weight behind Nigeria's Under 20 national team, and has tipped the Manu Garba led side, to qualify for this summer's World Cup.

Understandably, the 18 year old has a soft spot for the current Flying Eagles, as he was supposed to join forces with the Golden Eaglets before the 2013 Fifa under 17s, but club commitments prevented him from making the trip to Nigeria.

Now, he is prepared to right a wrong by making himself available for selection if the Flying Eagles qualify for the tournament in New Zealand.

''Of course, the Flying Eagles will qualify for the World Cup, they possess the qualities,'' Boluwatife Balogun said to SL10.ng.

''I have been following the team lately, and they have star players there, mostly from the previous Under 17 squad, which triumphed in the United Arab Emirates two years ago.

''I have not yet had any contact with the Under 20 national team coaches, but I would prefer to play for the team than the Under 23 squad.

''Christian Pyagbara is my favorite player in the squad. I think he'll catch the eye during the African Youth Championship.''

Boluwatife Balogun has spent the last two years playing for the youth teams of Barcelona.

Born in Nigeria, the exciting prospect is also eligible to represent two other countries, France and Holland.

Solomon Back On PSG Radar

HNK Rijeka winger Theophilus Solomon, who will be a free agent at the end of the year, is set to turn down an offer of a fresh two year deal, from the Croatia side following interest from France Ligue 1 giant Paris St Germain.

The 19 year old was courted by the Parisians one and half years ago, before his 18th year birthday, but a move to the Parc De Princess failed to materialize, following complexity in the way that he was meant to be transferred.

PSG were willing to give him a three year deal on his 18 year birthday, but one of the youth coaches at HNK Rijeka feeder team in Nigeria Football Academy, Abuja Renzo Goobo who was close to the then coach of the team, Carlo Ancelloti told the Italian the speedy ace was under contract with Rijeka, which was not true as he was yet to sign his professional terms.

However few months after the deal was broken, he committed himself to a two year deal with Rijeka, with the option of another two years but, he no longer wishes to take up the option of staying in Croatia any further.

SL10.ng scooped his agent Jairo Pachon, which is due to meet with officials of PSG, who contacted him after watching the player in a winter camp training in Bosnia, a few weeks ago where ironically, they were there to run the rule on another player.

There is also interest for his services in Switzerland and already a line of communication has been opened, with a scout from FC Basle for the soon to be free player.

On loan at NK Zadar, he has battled with a thigh muscle problem all season, which has limited him to just a few appearances for the team, with four goals to his team including a hat trick in the cup away at NK Zagora.

Nwobodo To Secure His Dream With Ajax Amsterdam?

Enugu Rangers mercurial midfielder Obinna Nwobodo, who is presently a member of the Nigeria Under-20 team listed by coach Manu Garba to feature at next month Africa Youth Championship, might secure a dream move to Dutch giant Ajax Amsterdam if he impresses at the tournament.

A close associate of the player revealed to SL10.ng that the 18 year old was recommended to the Dutch giants, who kept him under watch towards the end of last season, but his super showing at the recently concluded Super 4 invitational tournaments held in Abuja, convinced them he is worth a close view.

" We proposed him to Ajax towards the end of last season, as expected they kept him under watch but, they contacted us after the Super four after watching him and now they will be in Senegal to scout him and three other players", He told SL10.ng on the condition of anonymity.

Nwobodo who is gifted with good dribbling skills and visionary passes, is expected to play a pivotal role for Nigeria, alongside the duo of Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and Akinjide Idowu, in the midfield for Nigeria at the Africa Youth Championship, which also serves as a qualifying series for the Under-20 World cup, that will take place in New Zealand later in the year.

Ajax boasts of a rich connection with Nigerian players, with the duo of Finidi George and Kanu Nwankwo, the most successful among Nigeria players to have turned out for the Eredivisie side.

Spurs Want Musa Yahaya Back In London

SL10.ng understands that English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur want their youth teamer Musa Yahaya to return to London immediately to start his rehabilitation.

The Mutunchi Academy product had to pull out of the Flying Eagles African Youth Championship squad after tearing his knee ligament in a friendly against Ghana on February 18.

And an examination by national team medics after the team returned to Nigeria revealed that he faces six weeks on the sidelines.

Musa Yahaya is still in camp receiving treatment from Flying Eagles doctors, but it is understood that Tottenham Hotspur have been in touch with his minders, informing them that they want the midfielder back in
London as soon as possible.

The White Hart Lane outfit have opined that the attacking midfielder will get the best treatment when he returns to the United Kingdom.

Because of the relatively short time between the African Youth Championship and the Fifa Under 20 World Cup, the earlier plan was for Yahaya to remain with the Flying Eagles until July when he resumes pre -
season training.

The 17 - year - old signed a preliminary contract with Tottenham Hotspur in March 2014, which will become activated next January, all things being equal.

Manu: We Have Selected The Best Players

With names like Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfried Ndidi and Musa Yahaya missing from the final list of players to the Africa Youth Championship, Flying Eagles coach, Manu Garba says he has chosen only the best players at his disposal.

The final 21-man list for the tournament was announced on Thursday, the some of the team’s stellar names expectedly missing, and Manu has explained that the 21 players selected are the best he could have chosen from what he had available.

“We have always said that only the best players would be selected and that is what we have done,” he told sl10.ng.

“It is quite unfortunate that we do not have the likes of Iheanacho and Wilfried Ndidi but we have confidence on the abilities of the players we have at the moment.

“And when you have very good players, you can only choose the best out of them and that is what we have done for the Africa Youth Championship.”

The Flying Eagles coach however admitted that they will miss some of the players that have failed to make the team, but maintained that the selected players can also get the job done.

“We surely will miss them, like Musa Yahaya, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfried Ndidi but we must focus on what we have.

“Hopefully if we qualify for the World Cup then they will join us,” Manu said.

Kelechi Iheanacho and Musa Yahaya have both failed to make the team due to injuries, while the NFF have failed to secure the release of Ndidi from Belgian club, Genk.

Coach Amuneke maintained from day 1 that he wanted that trophy. When they were knocked out, he was okay because they have a chance to redeem themselves in Chile.

Remember, Coach Manu Garba did not win the African U17 trophy too.

No Gambia Camp For Flying Eagles

The proposed camping of the Flying Eagles in The Gambia has been shelved, and the team will now travel directly from Nigeria to Senegal for the Africa Youth Championship, SL10.ng has learnt.

The Nigerian U20’s were initially expected to camp in The Gambia for a few days and travel to Senegal from there, but SL10.ng now understands that that will no longer be the case and the team will now depart Nigeria for Dakar this week.

Coach Manu Garba had last Thursday announced his final list of 21 players for the tournament, which expectedly excluded the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Musa Yahaya and Wilfried Ndidi due to injuries and club commitments.

The team is presently camped in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, and is expected to travel to Dakar via Lagos.

They have been involved in a series of friendly games, including the Super 6 tournament in Abuja, and two international friendly matches against the Black Satellites of Ghana, and they have also played some local teams.

Nigeria remains the most successful country in the history of the Africa Youth Championship, having won the competition a record six times, the last triumph coming four years ago in South Africa when John Obuh led to the team to beat Cameroon 3-2 in the final.

This year’s edition will see Nigeria in group A, along with hosts Senegal, Congo and Cote d’ Ivoire.

Moses Simon Scores Sixth Goal For Gent

KAA Gent maintained their third position in the Pro League standings after their hard fought 1 - 0 win over Waasland-Beveren on Sunday in the 28th round of games.

Midway into the second half, Nigeria youth international scored what turned out to be the match winner.

Moses Simon, who joined Gent in the winter market, has scored six goals in the league since January, including a hat - trick against Lokeren exactly a month ago.

He was among the pool of players being considered to grace the African Youth Championship, but club commitments meant he could not make the Flying Eagles roster.

KAA Gent have never lost a game in which Moses Simon scored.

Moses Simon Ajala scored the only goal of the game as KAA Gent kept the pressure on leaders Club Brugge at the top of the Belgian Pro League standings to four points, with a 1-0 win over Waasland-Beveren on Sunday at the Freethiel Stadium.

The Nigerian Ronaldo poked home the winner twenty four minutes from time after benefitting from Laurent Depoitre's assist.

Ajala took his goal tally in the league for De Buffalo's to six from six appearances since he joined them from Slovakian Super Liga outfit Trencin in the winter transfer window.

In the past, English Premier League pair, Liverpool and Tottenham were reportedly chasing the youngster. Ajax Amsterdam and Heerenveen also registered interest in his services

However, he opted to join Gent in order to aid his development and be ready for the challenges that lies ahead of him.

Ajala is set to be the subject of bids from top European clubs in the summer transfer window.

He is tipped to become the next Nigerian wide man to make his mark in Europe and follow in the footsteps of Victor Moses.

Ajala is owned by the famed GBS Academy, the same Academy that produced dashing winger Ahmed Musa, who is now at CSKA Moscow.

Barcelona Starlet Balogun May Debut For France

France are in pole position, ahead of Holland and Nigeria, to cap highly-rated Barcelona youth teamer Boluwatife Balogun, and the attacking midfielder could make his debut for their Under 18 squad in the not too distant future.

Balogun can represent France at international level as his mom is a French citizen, and the player has hinted that he is considering the proposal from France's youth team coaches since he has not been invited by Nigeria.

''The France Under 18 squad has made contact with me. Philippe Bergeroo and Francis Smerecki recently approached me,''Boluwatife Balogun said to SL10.ng.

''I told them I needed to think about it. My mom wants me to represent France while my father wants Nigeria.''

The Lens product had been habouring hopes of breaking into the Flying Eagles squad before this summer's Fifa Under 20 World Cup, and he is now in a dilemma over the country to represent.

''Nigerian football is well known for the talent it has in its youth team example the last Under 17, same as France. I don't have any preference for now.

''In France, they give the youth team players a chance in the senior squad ,like Paul Pogba.'' Balogun added.

NFF wants Flying Eagles to win AYC

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has challenged the Flying Eagles to win the 2015 Africa Youth Championship in Senegal.

NFF deputy secretary general Emmanuel Ikpeme told the Senegal-bound Flying Eagles at their Hotel camp in Abuja, Wednesday that the entire country is looking up to them to win the continent’s U20 championship in Senegal.

“On behalf of the president of the NFF, I wish to congratulate the players who made the final squad to the AYC in Senegal,” began Ikpeme in a very passionate address to the team.

“The President is particularly delighted that the bulk of the squad to Senegal is from the team who won the U17 World Cup two years ago.

“The target to the team therefore is for the team to win the AYC and confirm that winning the U17 World Cup was not a fluke.

He added: “Your first match will be against the host’s country Senegal and do not expect it to be an easy match but we believe you are up to the task going by what you showed in your recent test matches in Ghana.

“We should not take any match or opponent for granted and so you should resolve as a team to make Nigeria happy and proud in Senegal.”

Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba assured the NFF the team are fired up for glory in Senegal.

“We as a team always want to win every game we play and that is the attitude we will take to the AYC,” Manu.

“We will not underrate any team in Senegal, but we are confident we will do the nation proud.

Ugbade: Golden Eaglets Failure Has Put Us Under Some Pressure

Ahead of the 20th Africa Youth Championship which kicks off this weekend in Senegal, Flying Eagles assistant coach, Nduka Ugbade has admitted that the failure of the Golden Eaglets to win the CAF U17 championship has put them under some pressure.

Speaking to sl10.ng, Ugbade reckoned that they’re not usually under pressure, but goes on to admit that there might be some pressure now after the U17 tournament.

“I would say yes, but just little pressure,” he told sl10.ng. “We are very aware of how much our team is followed and loved by Nigerians and I read it every day on your website of how much they expect from us, and forming the squad for the 2018 World Cup (laughs), this can no longer be a joke when you continue to hear this every day.

“But we are not concerned about this for now, our interest is taking one step at a time and one game at a time and finally qualify for the World Cup and if possible win the AYC and then try to win the World Cup,” Ugbade reckoned.

Ugbade was also assistant to Manu Garba during the last U17’s, as they finished second at the 2013 CAF U17 championship but went ahead to win that year’s FIFA U17 World Cup.

Sl10: You guys have selected 21 players for the tournament after months of preparing. Give us a brief overview of how it has been these past months and how you came about the players that have been chosen.

Ugbade: The issue here is very simple and unique in its nature because for the first time – we’ve done it a little before in the past – but for the first time, we are progressing and we have a progression of a lot of the guys from the U17 to the U20 and they’re used to the information and our philosophy and they’re also used to the methods we use in achieving our goals, and this is including those that just joined us at the U20 level. Some of them have actually worked with us in the past and basically I will say there is no major stress. The only stress we have now is that when you’re participating in a competition and you have not started, there is a level of anxiety, but for the moment the boys are very fine and we’re prepared. We played two friendly matches against Ghana and we saw the psychological effect of not having exposure, especially in the first game but we overcame that to win the second game 2-0.

Sl10: What sought of challenge are you expecting in Senegal?

Ugbade: We are expecting to play against stronger teams and possibly older teams as well, just the Ghanaians because we have just progressed from the U17 but we are not just going to be participating, but we are going to be competing in Senegal. And I mean highly competing.

Sl10: This team is shorn of some key players due to club commitments and injuries, would you say it has put you under some level of pressure and how much of an effect is it going to have?

Ugbade: The issue here is that most of the guys that have missed out are very important to this team but like I always tell you, that was for the U17 because the U20 is a different ball game entirely. We keep saying this to all of them, because even if they were here, they will have to fight for places with those that are here. We recognize their talents but in modern football and for us training the boys, talent is no longer enough and we must develop it to become profitable for usage and that is why some of them signed for clubs worth millions right from the U17’s. It is because we are playing on information and they are used to it but you cannot rule out the guys that are here, they’re very strong and we’re going to be competing very well in Senegal even without them. But during the World Cup, surely, most of them are going to come to fight for shirts and if they cannot, they will have to return back to their teams.

Sl10: I’m sure you’re well aware of the expectations Nigerians have of you. Does this in any way put you and the boys under pressure?

Ugbade: We are not under pressure. Especially when we have a very formidable team that we know within our hearts are very good. Even without Kelechi Iheanacho, Musa Yahaya, Wilfred Ndidi, and Isaac Success, we are very confident and hopefully these guys will make the World Cup squad. I am sure we have a very formidable team that will participate very well in Senegal and do very well and go on to do very well at the World Cup.

Sl10: The U17’s didn’t do well in Niger and naturally, expectations have shifted to your team. Wouldn’t this put some pressure on you, no matter how little?

Ugbade: I would say yes, but a just little pressure. We are very aware of how much our team is followed and loved by Nigerians and I read it every day on your website of how much they expect from us, and forming the squad for the 2018 World Cup (laughs), this can no longer be a joke when you continue to hear this every day. But we are not concerned about this for now, our interest is taking one step at a time and one game at a time and finally qualify for the World Cup and if possible win the AYC and then try to win the World Cup.

Sl10: Thank you very much coach

Ugbade: Thank you very much.

Kalmar To Run The Rule Over Taiwo Awoniyi At African Youth Championship

Thomas Andersson Borstam , the sporting director of Kalmar, will travel to Senegal to run the rule over the club’s Under 21 player, Taiwo Awoniyi, at the African Youth Championship.

“Taiwo has made a positive view during their preparations. He’s only 17 and meet players who are one, two years older.

“He is the Vice Captain of the team and is an exciting player. It will be fun to see him and it is important that we are there.

“There will be a bit of a scouting trip to scan the market,” says Thomas Andersson Borstam to 24Kalmar.se.

The Flying Eagles front - man will sign a four - year deal with the Swedish Allsvenskan side in August when he clocks 18, all things being equal.

Alampasu Concerned About Flying Eagles Performance

Despite seemingly losing his first choice status to Joshua Enaholo, Flying Eagles goalkeeper, Dele Alampasu has told sl10.ng that he is more concerned about their performance in Senegal than regaining his position as the team’s number one choice goalkeeper.

The Nigerian U20 team departed Nigeria for Senegal on Wednesday for the Africa Youth Championship, and Alampasu says he is more concerned about the team having a good outing.

“I am really not bothered about who is first choice,” he told sl10.ng. “I think the focus is on us doing well in Senegal than who is first choice goalkeeper.

“We have worked together as a team and we understand each other and we know what we want, and I am not bothered but if the coaches pick me, I will be ready,” he said.

The Flying Eagles have travelled with three goalkeepers; Joshua Enaholo, Leke Ojo and Dele Alampasu.

And Alampasu, a member and first choice goalkeeper of the World Cup winning squad from Nigeria’s U17 team of 2013, however says he hopes to be the number one by the time the FFA U20 World Cup comes around.

“I wasn’t in the CAF U17 championship in 2013 but I was first choice at that year’s World Cup and maybe it will happen again,” he said sheepishly.

Awoniyi Hopes To Live Up To Expectations

Flying Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi has said he would like to finish the Africa Youth Championship as top scorer.

The 17-year old has been the team’s focal point in attack in the absence of Isaac Success, and is expected to lead Nigeria’s attack in Senegal and has said he hopes to can live up to the expectations.

“I hope I can live up to the expectations and I hope I can finish as goal scorer and help my team win the competition,” he told sl10.ng.

“The coaches have told us that the competition is going to be tougher than the U17’s and so we expect a tougher challenge but I still hope I can make it for my team.”

Awoniyi, who now plays for Swedish club Kalmer, was a surprise breakout at the 2013 U17 World Cup, emerging from the shadows of Isaac Success, who suffered an unfortunate injury.

And two years later, Awoniyi says he is now a grown man and can handle himself against tougher opponents.

“Things are different from the U17’s now because we have grown a bit. I think we are better players now and we can handle pressure differently,” he said.
