I use a 2004 honda accord american spec, I was driving today and the ABS icon on the car dash board popped up, and it has refused to go off...please can someone enlighten me, I don't have an idea what is it but my car seem to be in a good shape....Thanks |

Antilock Braking System (ABS) is a technology in vehicles, motorcycles etc which engage during emergency braking to prevent brake lock and tyre slippage. It is made up of sensors attached to either a wheel, a pair of wheels or all the wheels which monitors individual wheel speed of a car and then very quickly "engages, disengage, engage disengage" the brakes in a car much quicker than human reaction time to prevent wheel lock and slippage which could lead to slides, and/or careering of a vehicle" .the sensors is then attached to an ABS module which could either be single channel, dual channel, 3 channel or 4 channel ABS module which is then linked to the ECU (Engine Control Unit) which monitors and gives control to the ABS. Usually, these parts fails due to it being tampered with during wheel/tyre brake servicing such as during tyre change, suspension change, brake calipers, disc changes etc and also when so much dirts, or other impurities enters the sensor and block its ability to read the wheel spin or during quick hard rough driving over rough road which could disengage the sensor(s) or damage the sensor(s) in a wheel(s). For you to know your ABS is functional, when you turn on your car while your foot is still on the brake or during hard braking situation, you'd get a pulsating feel on the brake pedal which shows the ABS is pumping on the brakes in a rapid "engage disengage engage disengage" manner. If your ABS is faulty, the ABS light comes up thus meaning that your ECU has disabled the ABS system due to a fault and during emergency braking your ABS won't intervene thus leaving you to rely on your skill as a driver. However, if ABS is disabled, your normal braking is still normal. To check for an ABS fault, a dedicated OBD ii device which has ability to read and interprete ABS error codes or a dedicated ABS device must be used to scan the car and reveal the fault. I'd advice you to get that car scanned with either a dedicated ABS scanner or an ABS enabled OBD ii scanner to show you the fault. Hope I enlightened you? 7 Likes 2 Shares |

To add to it, in the new technology being adopted by auto manufacturer now is that some of them have disengage the use of two separate speed sensors Wheel Speed Sensor (WSP) and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) to monitor the speed of the vehicle in relation to the transmission (Gear) Shift. Rather they have chose to use the Wheel Speed Sensor which is the signal from the ABS Sensor to do the Transmission (gear) shifting. Thus in some modern cars when you see the ABS light ON it is advisable to quickly go for a fix if you don't want the transmission roasted. Better still need to go for a scan as it is advice. |

You would want the car to roll after an accident and you would want the doors to be unlocked. Now I'm not saying you didn't experience it but it must have been caused by a different circumstance.
