As a physician who has experienced similar situations in the past, let me clarify a few points. First, the doctor had to rent the equipment because it was not available in the hospital. No doctor will charge a patient for an equipment bought by the hospital. I have seen this happen many times. I once had a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who was the only with some latest operating equipment in a certain FMC. He had bought the equipment during a specialist surgical course in India. He was the only one with those equipment in the state capital and the only other option would be for parents to travel very far away. And of course he charges rent for those equipment. Second, for those asking 'how can a hospital not have such equipment'? Haven't you been to some govt ministries, agencies, etc where they tell you they cannot attend to you because problems like: No ink or paper to print. No light or no fuel in the generator to type your document. etc. And they ask you to use the business centres. So how come they can't afford paper, ink, generator or fuel? Like someone said, patients buy their own gloves in many hospitals. Worse still, many doctors(including myself) have been forced to attend to some patients without cloves. Why? Yeah, because at those moments it would appear most insensitive not to attend to such patients. The patient's relatives would accuse you of wickedness as some always do. Now the hazard allowance is 5k per month. Third, for those saying physician CMDs are responsible for lack of equipment in hospitals. This is very funny. Most upgrading of hospital facilities is done by direct contract from Abuja without the CMDs' input. Besides, are the physician CMDs also responsible for lack of infrastructure in every other institution of govt? Lastly, for those saying that other health workers may do better as administrators, I know health centres being run by nurses. In fact, I served in one during my NYSC. It was and still a mess. And honestly, I cannot blame her. She has a limited knowledge of the total aspects of patient care when compared with the doctors. Her handling of drug procurement is a mess. So is everything else. I am sorry if you think this is too long 4 Likes |

Wow!!! Mods thanks for placing this article on FP.Although im not an FP enthusiast but all the same.Thank you. I could not hold back my annoyance and anger after carefully observing the true state of well beign of my countrymen back home. Its dearthly appalling. From education to health, employment to sustaining SME,its all politics and corruption fest. Imagine in a case where a citizen had to cough out almost N800 Fuckn grand...for hips joint replacement at "a government hospital" for crying out loud. It makes one to wonder what it will cost to have a triple heart bypass surgery, or colon resection to a save a dying patient. Nigeria presently is dying . Enuff of this PDP this APC that. The country is under the firm grip of vampires who are hell bent on ruling but without an iota of care or concern for the people they preside over. Left to me,I so desire the mount carmel experience for the living past and present "rulers" not "leaders".Beheading of each and everyone of them. Perhaps such will serve as a cautionary reminder for those aiming to be in elective positions I swear. |

prettyprettywow: Poor funding shey? What have we done with the little funding we have so far? I guess our Dr CMD's who are the world best administrators were busy enriching their pockets with the money meant for the buying of these equipment. I am sure our health sector gets more funding than those of Ghana and other poorer African countries whose health care system are better than ours. Yet, you want to lie to our faces that Drs should continue heading ba? Diaris God ooothen it'll be better when johesu heads it abi? Nonsense! |

theplanmaker: oh I have seen worse......there are cases in Ubth were consultants refuse to attend to patients except they register in their private clinics, this is what medicine has turned to in Nigeria. unlike education, poor funding is not the biggest problem in the health sector........corruption is the problem. Smh...and they keep comparing themselves to their colleagues outside Nigeria. What a shame. Some Nigerian professionals and greed? Disgraceful...and they have an MD who's supposed to be checking on their practices? |

We always put blame on government! We have forgotten that, govt. put somebody there to do the needful. The CMD's in charge of various hospitals should use their IGR to provide some basic instruments & equipment for the use of the workers instead of using the money for frivolous things, things that are irrelevant to the diagnosis & treatment Of the patients they are to look after, & that is why some people will capitalise on this to exploit patients. Therefore, the born to rule administrators (the Docs) who are suppose to know the importance of having these instruments & equipment should use their IGR to buy them. Chikena! They are incharge as CMDs & they should run it well. |

Jogbojogbo: We always put blame on government! We have forgotten that, govt. put somebody there to do the needful. I like the igr argument but until you find out how much it costs to run a hospital you will find out the hospitals are poorly funded. If we privatise the hospitals like we are agitating many of these johesu fighters would be without jobs.the only job in the hospital that cannot be replaced by a computer for most part is the doctor and the nurse. Even the pharmacist would be redundant. The hospital has been the only sector in the Nigerian economy with a semblance of sanity but the evil spirits disturbing Naija have found some loop hole to spread discord ( the black man's crave for another man's pride). |

I had similar problem at the maxillofacial surgery unit of ABUTH Zaria. I was having this recurrent toothache and I went to hospital. The doctors at the hospital diagnosed my problem as ingrowing wisdom tooth which have to be surgically remove. Since I was on NHIS as student of ABU, my HMO approved the surgery for me only to be told the maxillofacial surgeon that I have to pay for the rentage of drilling machine. I had no money that day so I returned back to the school clinic popularly called sickbay. On getting there I explained my predicament to the head dental surgeon and he told me that he would do the surgery without drilling machine if I could pay 1 thousand naira. After consulting my best friend in school then, I organized the money and entered for the surgery. To my astonishment, this doctor started using what resemble stainless plier and chisel on my tooth after he gave me one injection beneath the tooth. The pain was unbearable and it forced him to stop the surgery halfwAy... I'm still managing my condition using drugs and other necessary things. May the gods bless the Nigerian doctors like the pro-Russian separatists blessed flight mh17 |
Re: Amazing! Patients Pay Doctors To Use Surgical Equipment Atigbobi Hospital by linearity: 3:46pm On Jul 20, 2014 |
phantom: o please! you want to go towards the angle of fraud. what do you expect? the problem is that the hospital does not have a single drilling machine. that is what has given room to the whole 'renting one' rubbish. It appear the hospital do not have the drilling machine and the one in question belongs to the Dr. from his private practice. In the US it is the norm to pay multiple parties various fees apart from the hospital when you go for surgery or childbirth. But unlike this case, they all go through the insurance company(if you have insurance) and they certainly send you invoices. Not every professional or expert that attends to you at the hospital are paid by the hospital, many are consultants who you have to settle as well. Under this condition in this story, the wise thing to do is to actually pay the money or look for another hospital, you don't want someone to saboteur your operation. |

xrazzy: ... May the gods bless the Nigerian doctors like the pro-Russian separatists blessed flight mh17 this is very sickening, so if your wish is granted how would you or anyone get their medical needs taken care of in Nigeria? The fact that, you may have encountered a less than professional Nigerian doctor does not mean all Nigerian doctors are the same and must be doomed. Even if your encounter was a genuine fraud, is wishing that doctor harm the appropriate remedy to the problem? 1 Like |

Jogbojogbo: We always put blame on government! We have forgotten that, govt. put somebody there to do the needful. Dude come on!!! Are you for real? The Government put people in charge of the Police They also put people in charge of electricity production And even water too. Do you need a prophet to tell you that Healthcare is grossly underfunded? This story is about a drill, but do you know of how many similar situations exist in Govt hospitals? What IGR are you talking about If these hospitals are privatized, charges would go up and then you can talk about IGRs, but services will definitely be better. And then the FG should be responsible for ensuring it is affordable by supplementing the charges for patients. |
