***** Cross-section of the confab delegates.
A delegate from Oyo State representing the forum of former members
of the House of Representatives in the National Conference, Sheik
Mudashir Sekoni, has expressed optimism that the Yoruba would
smile home with their desire for regionalism and the state police at
the end of the exercise.
He also said that the people of Oke-Ogun in Oyo State were
marginalised because they did not have influential citizens.
Sekoni said, “For instance in Oke-Ogun, we have a vast land for
agricultural and industrial development, but the government is not
looking at the opportunities because we don’t have influential people
in government; we don’t have influential people with money and
power.
“Everybody was clamouring for regionalism and devolution of power.
So far, from the things that have happened, we have not gotten all of
them but I believe that by the time we leave the conference, our
desires will be achieved, which are regionalism, state police and
devolution of power.
“Every state governor comes to Abuja every month to share money;
we cannot get development as a result of that and that is why the
level of corruption is high in this country. It is sad and unfortunate
that you give the governors resources to develop their environment
but they just pocket them.
“For instance, look at our case in Oke-Ogun, in most of the areas
what do we have? Nothing! No Federal Government presence. There is
nothing in Oke-Ogun where we have 10 local government areas with a
large population. There is nothing substantial; no Federal Government
presence anywhere in Oke-Ogun and it is sad.
“I made that comment in my response to the President’s speech that
at least, we need a state. If we get this state, we will know how to
develop ourselves because the ruling class from Ibadan and
Ogbomosho has taken over everything. Oyo State as it is presently
constituted is large.”
He added, “Governance in Nigeria has been personalised; anybody
who gets there, if you are not close to them, you will not get
anything.
“That is not how to develop a nation, and that is what we have in Oyo
State. There is nothing you can get if you are not close to the
government as a person. The government has not asked any question
about its priority.”
Sekoni also reiterated his agitation for the establishment of a federal
university in Oke-Ogun whose demand started during the
administration of former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.
He said, “During Babangida’s regime, we thought we were going to
get that university but the military leader said we should contribute
some money and may be that policy then was directed against the
people of Oke-Ogun. This is because they knew we did not have the
money. Where did they expect us to get the billions of Naira they
asked us to contribute? Who among us served in government and had
the opportunity to steal money?
“So, we could not provide the money and that is why the university
went to Ogbomosho. When a former governor of Oyo state, Adebayo
Alao Akala, came on board, the development was concentrated in
Ogbomosho too. That is why I talked about personalising government
and that is unfortunate.” ****

"Yoruba" will smile after confab! Not nigeria will smile. I thought this conference was meant to reconcile nigeria and set us on a part of national unity going forward. Instead every delegate is pandering to their ethnic group and region. What a idiotic waste of money. How many families would have been lifted from poverty with the allowance of 5 million given to a single delegate? Grotesque nation!!

bros, most times we talk and think we make sense. But wen we can't see we're not making sense while no making sense is called foolishness.

Ok, the guy said yoruba will smile, and u're shouting abt it....
Was he not paid to represent his people?
Was that not the reason all delegates were being paid?

Everybody is supposed to be satisfied. That's the purpose of the delegates, and the confab.
So, the man is simply doing his job!!!
