The Chairman Northern States
Governors' Forum (NSGF) and
Governor of Niger state, Muazu
Babangida Aliyu has expressed
shock over the death of former
Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries
(OPEC) and one time Petroleum
Minister, Dr Rilwanu Lukman . According to Aliyu, in a press
statement issued by his Chief Press
secretary, Israel Ayegba Ebije, said
Lukman was Nigeria's gift to the
world adding that his intellectual
inputs to the petroleum sector and science as a whole is indelible. The Chairman of the forum has
described the passing of the elder
statesman as tragic and monumental
loss to humanity as a whole, said the
deceased lived a worthy, exemplary
and fulfilled life. "Humanity has lost a thoroughbred
professional, fine gentleman, world
class petroleum engineer and astute
manager of human and material
resources who has left indelible
footprints on the sands of time.” “While it wouldn’t be fair for the
North to solely lay claim to this
departed gentleman, he was indeed
a great Northerner the region will
continue to remember. He will
remain an example of a true Nigerian who served his fatherland
solely contributing to efforts aimed
at making the world a better place". Recalling his days as Nigeria's
Petroleum Minister, the forum noted
that Dr Lukman initiated wonderful
policies that brought useful reforms
with traceable results to the
petroleum sector. It further stated that as Petroleum
Minister he introduced a number of
sound policies and blueprint for
exploration activities in line with
international best practices. “Dr Lukman was a first class
Nigerian. We must learn from his
patriotism, integrity, honesty,
discipline, and dedication to duty
and love for all, irrespective of tribe,
ideological or religious differences. In all his engagements, he considers
Nigeria first before thinking of
personal or sectional interest". "As we mourn the passing of this
illustrious son of Africa, I urge us to
toe his exemplary, especially in our
disposition to issues of national
concern. The best way to immortalize
him is to uphold those core ideals he worked hard to entrench in the
system.” The forum also prayed God to grant
the departed Aljannah Firdaus and
comfort his family, friends and
associates in this trying moment. http://m.dailytimes.com.ng/article/8272/rilwanu-lukman-was-nigeria’s-gift-to-the-world-–-northern-governors/
