THE national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, against what it said was the negative propaganda embarked upon by his media aides which the ruling party observed could harm his legacy.

The ruling party was upset by a statement credited to the former vice president, where he accused the PDP-led Federal Government of “polarising the country along fault lines, as a means of diverting the attention of Nigerians from its ineptitude and apathetic posture to corruption and insecurity.”

A statement issued by the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, in Abuja, on Monday, said though the PDP would not want to join issues with Atiku, it, however, wanted the former vice president “to caution his media managers to desist from associating him with propaganda, political mudslinging and character assassination.”

It said PDP had deliberately chosen not to take on any of its former members now in the opposition for the simple reason that they were members of the same large family, differences in persuasions notwithstanding.

“However, it is shocking that the leaders and members of the APC have gone on rabid attack on the presidency and the leadership of the PDP.

“In spite of this, we wish to state, for the avoidance of doubt, that we stand by our position that the APC is a party of selfish, religious and ethnic bigots pursuing a supporter of APC ideology,” it said.

The statement added that APC and its leaders were embittered that the PDP machinery had been able to effectively expose and profile them as they truly were, adding that “they are in pains that Nigerians now know that APC has no agenda.”

The PDP warned that it would not relent but continue in the overall national interest to expose “their evil agenda, including their use of religion as a cover for narrow political ambitions.”

The statement added further that “on the issue of APC having an Islamic agenda, it is known to all and sundry that the the PDP never labelled it as such.

“We merely, in our statement of January 7, 2014, drew the attention of Nigerians to the revelation by an Islamic cleric, Ambassador Yusuf Garba and the Religious Equity Promotion Council (REPC) that the APC was seeking to impose on Nigeria, an agenda akin to that of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.”

The ruling party advised Atiku’s handlers to remember that he was once in the PDP and shared the same vision with the party.
