Really like this book. More balanced and perhaps more comprehensive than S. Johnson's masterpiece.

The largely unknown woman (I didn't know about her till late last year) who was the only female warrant chief in all of British West Africa. Recently got the book on Amazon. Still reading it.

will check it out.

The problem is its rather difficult to match the standard of earlier works, however thats not to say the more modern accounts are not also noteworthy in their own right.

i've come across a few books published recently (not on yoruba history though, but other subjects), which have been comparable with any older work one wants to name.

These three books ('Ibo people and the Europeans', 'A History of the Igbo People', and 'The Igbo Worlds') were written by Professor Elizabeth Isichei in the '70s. Sadly the first two are (I believe) no longer in print. The last time i saw them was in a private collection almost ten years ago. If the last one is still in print, then it is extremely rare. I acquired an old copy last year from an old bookseller.

I've seen some of her work online, but never actually read her books.
