Gaza City: The Israeli military offensive in Gaza has so far resulted into the deaths of more than 500 people. Israeli soldiers are dropping white phosphorous bombs – known to induce cancer in humans on Gazans.

Israel had earlier banned weapons, including uranium and white phosphorous, but the aerial and ground forces are now using them to pound Palestinian civilians. Considered as banned weapons, these bombs have violated all international conventions.

Daily Bhaskar brings you 10 facts that will help you understand Israel-Gaza conflict:

1. Gaza and West Bank are two separate geographical entities of Palestine. Earlier, Gaza was part of Egypt, which shares its border with the Palestinian territory on the west.

2. Israel invaded Egypt in 1967 and got full control over Gaza Strip. It continued its occupation on Gaza till 2005. West Bank was already under Israel's control.

3. In 2005, Israel, under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, reached an agreement with the Palestinian Authority and withdrew its civilian and military presence from the Gaza Strip but retained control over the Gaza airspace, maritime access and borders even with Egypt. The Palestinian Authority was governed from Ramallah in West Bank by Fatah party.

As per the agreement, Israel continued to patrol and monitor the external land perimeter of the Gaza Strip, with the exception of its southernmost border (where Egypt retained control of the border and border crossings were supervised by European monitors). It also continued to monitor and blockade Gaza's coastline.

4. Soon after Israel withdrew from Gaza, Hamas, a political outfit that doesn't recognize Israel, emerged as a dominant power in the area.

5. When Hamas won the January 2006 Palestinian legislative election, gaining a majority of seats in the Palestinian Legislative Council, the conflict between Israel and Gaza intensified.

The conflict escalated with the split of the Palestinian Authority to Fatah government in the West Bank and the Hamas government in Gaza and the following violent ousting of Fatah. Palestinians continued shooting Qassam rockets at Israeli settlements located near the Gaza borders and staged cross-border raids aimed at killing or capturing Israeli soldiers.

Israel says its air as well as ground attacks are intended to stop rocket fire on its borders by Hamas and destroy Palestinian militants' tunnels.

6. Israel borders Gaza on three sides. It sealed its border with the Gaza Strip, largely preventing free flow of people and many imports and exports. No one, even politicians of powerful countries, can enter Gaza without permission of Israel.

In short, Gaza has no access to the rest of the world.

7. There are several Israeli checkpoints in Gaza. Essential commodities like food items, milk and medicines have to cross these check points. Gazans have to pay huge amount to Israeli authorities pass the check points with these goods.

8. Israel does not allow sufficient supplies of food and other essentials items to Gaza. Hospitals here always run short of essential medicines and shops have enough rations. There sufficient supply of gas, petrol and power to Gaza.

The inflation in Gaza is highest in the world.

9. There is no airport, sea port and even railway station in Gaza. Residents cannot leave Gaza because they don't have passports. In addition, Israel does not allow them to cross its check posts.

10. The United Nations has requested Israel several times to give up its claim on Gaza and stop taking lives of innocent, but it never listens.

You got your second "like" from me. That exactly is what people don't understand. The methods employed by Tel Aviv to stifle the Palestinian militias is only going to make more and more people sympathetic to their course. The cyberspace is awash with images of israeli war crimes in Gaza, making some of their dogged allies express, albeit in a reserved fashion, some displeasure over their disproportionate brutality. This brutish oppression is driven by Uncle Sam's unwavering support for anything Jewish, and the fact that Israel is a Nuclear Power. Pray tell, how could US justify its stand against Assad given its overt support for the ongoing indefensibly satanic Israeli military campaign Everyone can now see what disgusting hypocrisy that is the hallmark of Washington's foreign policies!

As israel keeps killing palestinians, they breed further hostiles within their rank and they know not. It may not be now, but israel will surely meet it's doom. Someone is saying israel's claim to the land is in the Bible, was the current state structure in the bible? Or let's go back to the ancient arrangement and see who can hv any claim to the land they occupy. Israel is oppressive, when they're done with palestine, they'll start with the neighboring states.

What the Israelis are doing to the Palestinians is very wicked.
Just that the Arabs are going about it the wrong way.
Shooting fireworks into Israeli population centre that doesn't even injure anyone is not the way to go about trying to win some freedom and dignity for Palestinians.

The Arabs need to put pressure on the Europeans and Americans to put pressure on the Israelis to stop the injustice going on in the middle east.

Gaza wasnt part of Egypt but after 1948, it was occupied by Egypt until 1973 Arab-Israeli war, when it was taken by Israeli forces along with Sinai Peninsula.
Sinai Peninsula was however returned to Egypt in 1978 after the Camp David accord.

Stop misinforming people, there is no Nation in history called Palestine.
Most of the present Palestinians are actually Arabs who migrated to the land of Israel, the remaining Palestinians are descendants of ancient Israelites who were forced to convert to Islam during Rushidum and Ottoman Caliphates rule over the whole of the Middle East.
Palestine was a region during Ottoman Caliphate, the name having been coined by the Romans around 150 AD after they expelled the Jews from their homeland , in an attempt to obliterate the Jews/ Jewish Kingdom for daring to revolt again Roman colonial rule ( read about THE ZEALOTS, Bar-Kokhbar's revolt).
There was no mention of any Palestinian group, revolting against Roman rule in history, because THERE WAS NO PALESTINIANS then!

In this modern era, Palestinians are Jordanians by nationality.

The Jordanian laws confer citizenship to all Palestinians everywhere and allow them to settle and make a living in Jordan should they wish to. This includes Palestinians in Gaza and the West Banks.

As a matter of fact and politics, some elements in Jordan (opposition to the minority Hashemian ruling elites) have called for the convergence of all Palestinians in their country, Jordan.

About 75% of Jordanian population is Palestinian.

The main contention are the claims to the Holy Sites and Jerusalem which the Palestinians say are theirs but which the Jews too claim as belonging to them and Jerusalem as the 'eternal capital of the Jewish people'.

Additionally, Israel wants the Palestinians to recognize the nation of Israel as a Jewish nation and Jerusalem as the capital.

So far none of them has made any shift in position.

The international community had tried to mediate between them arriving at several accords culminating in a two-state solution. But the contentious issues remain unsolved.

Whenever I hear about Isreal and Palestine Case , all that come to my mind z the Story in the Bible.
Of a truth, the Land belonged to Palestine, but God Promised Abraham that the land[Palestine] will be given to his descendants.
Which was accomplished when they [Isrealis] returned from Egypt, they waged war with inhabitants of the Promised land, won them and ceased the Land and started inhabiting it.
Ever Since then, the struggle hv to continued till when about five Arab countries waged a war against Isreal, still they lost to the Israelites, this one got me baffled on hw a small country like Isreal will win five Countries.
Of a truth, Isreal z truelly the people after God's own heart, I don't support the way the Palestinians re been oppressed, but it z only God that will Settle the Issue b/w the two. For even UN, US can't really help out.
