Ihuo is an autonomous community in
southeastern Nigeria which is located near
the city of Owerri the capital of Imo State..
The name of the town is often written and
pronounced as Iho. The majority of
materials on this community refer to this
geographical location as Iho-Dimeze and
fondly called "Dimeze" by indigenes. The
geographical coordinates are: 5° 34' 0"
North, 7° 6' 0" East, geographical location:
Ikeduru, Imo, Nigeria, Africa
(Maplandia.com).
Iho is the Headquarters of Ikeduru Local
Government Area of Imo state and located
near the city of Owerri. Petroleum
exploration in Africa started at Iho-Dimeze
Ikeduru, North West of Owerri in Igboland
by Shell D’arcy in the 1930 and today still
holds a very high deposit of Hydrocarbons,
that has not being drilled. However, the first
commercial oil field was discovered in 1956
at Oloibiri in the Niger delta region of
Nigeria

I decided to post this because of its academic relevance.

(from Anthony, 2005; Fadojutimi, 2012).
The advent of the oil industry can be traced back to 1908, when a German Company, the Nigerian Bitumen Corporation, commenced exploration activities in Araromi area near Okitipupa in the present Ondo State, West of Nigeria. The search was not successful because oil was not found in commercial quantity. These pioneering efforts ended abruptly with the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
The search for oil in Nigeria was rejuvenated in 1937, with the establishment of the Shell D'Arcy (the forerunner of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria) an affiliate of the mineral oil companies of Shell Petroleum Company and British Petroleum Company. Their activities were also interrupted by the Second World War, but resumed 1947.
In November 1938 Shell-BP was awarded the sole concessionary rights covering the whole territory of Nigeria. Shell Overseas Exploration Co and Darcy Exploration Co were given license to jointly explore for oil throughout Nigeria by the British colonial government. After a five year interruption caused by the Second World War, Shell-BP intensified its exploration activities during the 1946-1951 period. previous size. In 1951 Shell-BP drilled its First Exploration well drilled near Owerri but it came up dry. During the next four years the company concentrated efforts in the areas around the Niger Delta in the southern part of Nigeria without discovering well that could produce oil.
With continuous effort in the search for oil in these areas for few more years, Shell-BP discovered oil in commercial quantity in Oloibiri, in the Eastern Niger Delta, in the present day Bayelsa State in 1956. Following the discovery by Shell D’Arcy Petroleum, pioneer production began in 1958. Towards the end of 1956 another discovery was made at Afam.
This discovery, opened up the Oil industry in 1961. Four additional foreign companies ( Mobil, Chevron, Texaco and Elf) started operations in Nigeria. (the first off-shore licenses were also awarded at this time).
