Osun/Oyo Customs Seizes 2 Trucks Laden With Rice

The Osun/Oyo area command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it intercepted two trucks loaded with 750 50kg bags of par-boiled rice smuggled into the country through Igbeti axis of the state.

According to the customs area comptroller, Mr Richard Oteri, the bags of rice were disguised as veterinary products and had a duty paid value (DPV) of N4 million.

Briefing journalists on the incidents leading to the interception of the smuggled rice, Oteri said one of the patrol teams led by a deputy superintendent of customs, Mr J.A. Alajogun on information patrol caught the two DAF trucks with registration numbers AKD 15 XB and JJJ 998 XL loaded with the contrabands.

He used the opportunity to re-state that importation of rice through the border remains prohibited, advising that those who wish to import rice should use the nation’s sea ports. “It should be noted also that the comptroller-general of customs, Alhaji Abudullahi Inde Dikko, is passionately committed to reducing the smuggling of rice into Nigeria and we are working round the clock to ensure that no rice passes through the border, or make it to Nigeria,” Oteri stressed.

Meanwhile, a new acting comptroller has been appointed to head the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, of the NCS, Ikeja. He is deputy comptroller Usman Turaki. Turaki’s appointment follows the redeployment of the former comptroller, Isa Nuhu, who had served for over a year as the helmsman of the unit to the customs headquarters in Abuja. Prior to his appointment, Turaki, who was recently promoted to the ranks of deputy comptroller had served as the staff officer of the unit. Nuhu has formally handed over to the new comptroller.
