Nigeria has been variously described as the home of oddities. But the fact that these oddities are increasing by the day gives course for concern. Many expected the populace to come to terms with global best practices regarding conducts, actions and all the what not. Let’s take a look at these oddities in ascending order of how prevailing they are. 1. TIME KEEPING Nigerians are not known to be good time managers. Didn’t they say time is money? It seems Nigerians have not heeded this popular saying otherwise, why do you find people still adopting the practice called ‘’African time’’? Fix your event for 9am and you should not expect your invited guest until 12 noon or even 1pm. It is that bad! Big dignitaries are the major culprit of this. The ‘’little men’’ are suppose to arrive and wait for the high and might before the show kicks off. Is that fair? I always say, until Nigeria addresses the little things like time keeping, achieving our true potential would remain a mirage. 2. NO CHANGE Those that frequent petrol filling stations would agree with me on this. Purchase fuel for the sum of N1,800 and instead getting a balance of N200, the attendant quickly says no change. Why is it so difficult to get your balance after a given purchase? The other strand of this “No Change’’ drama, is for those that patronize public transportation popularly called danfo and molues. You either split your big currency into smaller denominations or else, you remain stranded at the bus stop. The usual practice is a loud noise saying ‘’no change oh’’ What happened to good customer service? Am I supposed to look for change for the bus conductor? 3. BEATING QUEUES AND TRAFFIC LIGHT If the question goes, how many of us are guilty of these? Honestly, many hands would go up. Go to the banks, someone would just walk into the queue, straight up he or she is at the front. Is it traffic light? This is more common especially the danfos drivers in Lagos. Car owners are not exonerated from this malady because they are always in hurry. 4. PAYING FOR JOBS Oh yeah, ‘’wetin we no go hear for naija’’ Paying for jobs? Ask any member of your family, one or two must have fallen victim to this unscrupulous behavior especially in Government establishment. We all know what happened during the Immigration recruitment exercise nationwide early this year. It is pay for this form, buy this scratch card or pay for this recommendation letter all in the drive to reap off unsuspecting applicants. Where in the world do you pay to apply for jobs? A friend went for a job interview at Ikeja, after all the sermons and lengthy sessions. It bore down to paying #10,000 for what the so called recruitment officer referred to as License fee. Did I hear holy Moses? 5. CO-HABITATION Agreed, this is not a Nigerian thing because in Kenya last year, the Government started paying bride price for couples so as to curb the widespread habit of co-habitation. Now back to our beloved Nigeria. But seriously if you take cognizance of the alarming rate at which couples cohabit, you would think the era of legality in marriage through the payment of bride price is gone. That is how rampant this act is! Just get pregnant and the next thing on the card is for the couple to start living as hubby and wife without the knowledge or consent of their parents. Right? 6. CORPORATE BEGGING Women and Twins Begging. It's so irritating whenever I see women carrying Twin babies begging. They are everywhere. It's now a trend in Nigeria. 1 Like |
Watching both left and right before crossing a lane of the multilane road. It is abnormal to watch both left and right in this kinda lane cos normally, cars can't be moving in both directions of the lane. But in nigeria u just have to watch both directions cos of those car-missing-lane
Nig is a place where water can flow up the hill, son. Assume evry road user is mad. haven't u witnessed a traffic offender or a criminal taking the opposite lane to evade arrest? Even in Yankee dem dey look both sides. #safety |

Chasing after commercial buses. Then the conductor tells you "eleyi'n she bi obirin". Then again they hurry you to alight the bus sometimes you even have to alight while the bus is in motion. It's really terrible. |

1. Paying for admission runs 2. Most often in our tertiary institutions u can pay to up ur grade alias choose ur grade with ego 3. Always in an hurry to go somewhere and yet ending up no where. How do u explain this;nigerians are always in an hurry to do things yet we r backward technologically, ethically, morally, politically exeter a. 4. Always shouting on the phone when making a phone call. 5. Breaking the law by top elite of the society who often end up with this phrase "Do u know who I am?" Soliloquy: I'm sure u r not god? 5.Always angry when policies, or anything done does not end up in their favor of interest 6.Urinating by the wall of a building in the street even when an inscription is boldly written on it "Do not urinate here" Naija man go still peiece there. 7. Poor men making rich decisions like marrying more than 1 wife, buying cars with a loan they were supposed to develop or build business, show offs in a beer parlour etc 8. Taxi drivers put their head outa the cab and shout at each other when one wants to over take the other 9. Always clinging to the rule of thumb that one region is better than the other or one religion is superior to others often this matter arises it's a subject that appeals to our personal. E.g gaining a political office, appointment etc 10. I'm running out of point like #GEJ is running out of tactics to tackle boko, I dy come make I go loan #1.5 billion dollar brain from ITbomb. 2 Likes |

1. Personal servitude (a.k.a eye service to oga) to bosses at work. Nigerians will do anything to gain an undue favor from their bosses, they can even dash the oga their wives! It is hard work and dedication that gets you up not sycophancy! 2. Every unfavorable circumstances must be the work of enemies!....i hate this most! 1 Like |

These abnormalities stem from the indiscipline which is imbibed from home and then promulgates through out society. Parents maintain discipline in your home units. We used to be better. 1 Like |

Every nigerian is a considered a potential thief. Its so annoying that when you get to a place people keep suspecting at other. You will hear something like this, watch that thing well o make them no steal even when they are just two people in the room. Even in our churches and mosques the same is the case. 2. Graduates are now ashamed to be called graduate and are also ashamed to face their secondary school mates who never attended university but did something sheddy to acquire their money. Reason being that the guy is now riding a car, while the efikos are still trekking with their filed shoes. 1 Like |

continentalceo: Pls how this this topic make frontpage? Nairaland is becoming a Joke i guess u didn't read and understand the social abnormalities that we nigerians now see it as a normal thing. So saying nairaland has now become a joke is degrading the moderator and i commend the moderator from bringing this crucial issue to limelight. For example, do we observe zebra crossing in nigeria? It now part of us that you will be on a zebra crossing lane and your life is not considered safe. But go to some african countries not to talk of the developed ones. Zebra crossing is taken seriously. |

I advice you and all to do same and leave the E-castigation because it is harmful and Unhealthy to the growth we all so seek...thanks and God bless |

UjSizzle: When the party in power promotes, endorses and supports corruption this in turn affects our mindset case in point when GETJ say corruptuon is not stealing instead of clamping down on corrupt pple. Ponder on this, how many Nigerians won't take up the offer of stealing 2billion and spending 6months in prison? |
