…Gets final resting place
The remains of the former Director General of
National Agency for Food and Drug Administration
and Control, NAFDC and former Minister for
Information and National Orientation, Prof Dora
Akunyili will be laid to rest on August 25, 2014.
Addressing journalists yesterday at Akunyili
compound in Agulu, Anambra State, the husband to
the late Minister, Dr. Chike John Akunyili said the
final burial arrangement for his wife will stretch from
25th to 28th August when her remains will be finally
laid to rest at her residence, Nkitaku village, Agulu,
Anaocha council area of Anambra state.
Dr. Akunyili in an emotion laden voice said activities
marking the final journey of late Prof Akunyili will
span from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Enugu
and Anambra states including her final board
meeting at the University of Nigeria Teaching
Hospital, UNTH, Ituku Ozala Enugu state.
He further disclosed that Dora’s body would leave
National Hospital to their family house in Abuja from
where a mass will be held in her honour by John
Cardinal Onayeikan before leaving the nation’s capital
to Enugu for the final ceremony.
“As I speak, my heart is heavy that it appears
inappropriate for me to be granting press interview
at this point in time, but if I don’t do it, I will be doing
a great disservice to the younger generation who
look up to what Dora stood for and the way Dora
lived. She defied health challenges to serve her father
land”
Pointing at the spot where the late Information
Minister will be buried inside their living room, he
thanked President Goodluck Jonathan and Nigerians
for uncommon show of love and affection to his late
wife, adding that her demise was a plan of God.
“I thank God for the life and times of Dora. She was a
great woman, great believer of Nigeria. She kept on
singing about Nigeria even when she was very sick.
Her love for her country made her talk about the
country and issues of abducted Chibok girls. She
lived a life worthy of emulation and she tapped me
on the back when I broke the news that she had
endometracinomo and not cervical cancer as was
reported in certain media. This type of cancer is very
deadly that its patients only live for seven months.
But when I told her about the disease she told me
that Doctors had said their own, but God had not said
his own. She lived for almost two years after” he said.
Dr. Akunyili also said the burial arrangement for his
late wife will be attended by prominent Nigerians
both home and in the disapora including President
Goodluck Jonathan and other international
personalities.
