If the british had divided Hausaland and parts of Niger and Chad as one separate entity (Arewa/Hausaland), and Northern Cameroon and Adamawa as a separate entity and South-East Nigeria with South Cameroon and South-West Nigeria with Benin &Togo..............the entire African division of countries would have made MORE SENSE.

There you go Sir, you dislike the diversity your self. Now imagine if all Nigerians were Yorubas Or Igbos or Hausas, definitely things would had turned out different because we'd all understand one other.
You've made your point.

I do not dislike diversity. I just believe that tribes need to be given some sense of autonomy and self-determination.

I dream of the day when Africa becomes a United Tribal Confederacy.

Different and separate ethnic nations united under a common umbrella and goal.

Imposing one culture on the rest is just stoking the flames all over again.

Igbos revolted because they felt they were being imposed upon by the North.

If there was some degree of autonomy in Igboland, the Biafra issue would never have arised.

Diversity has played more role in Nigeria than religion. The civil war, which is the biggest event in Nigerian history was a diversity issue.

Thousands were massacred in the North, simply because they were Igbos. It's a diversity issue.

Diversity might have played a part in the civil war, but the war was majorly caused by politics. Politics and bad policies have been the major cuase of enmity among Nigerians.

Diversity, in itself, is not evil. The use of it through propanganda and the divide-and-conquer tactics of our leaders is what's EVIL.

America is a migrant country, all the whites there are migrants, like wise the blacks and asians, the original native Americans tribes were at the throat of each other before the coming of the whites.

America is a poor example to use to explain the Nigerian problem. A better example would be Europe, a simple look at the map of Europe would reveal how small some of their countries are, their boundaries weren't artificially created, they were formed in wars. We saw how Yugoslavia,a similar anomaly like Nigeria, broke down into pieces,a similar fate awaits Nigeria.

Online Dictionary:
DIVERSITY: Variety ; especially :  the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization.

Do we have different types of people in both US and Nigeria?

Do we have different types of races in both US and Nigeria?

Do we have different types of cultures in both US and Nigeria?

Whether it was migration or settlement or amalgamation that caused their diversity is of little importance.

Lagos is the best state in Nigeria today because of, and not limited to, her diversity. Yes, there are scruples here and there but its no different from the model in a homogeneous environment like Ekiti.

Diversity is a neutral tool. The use of it is what's not neutral. Unlike religion whereby eternal hell is promised to anybody not following your own particular religion. And unlike politics where your opposition is well, your opponent.

So, once again, diversity has no significant impact in the issues of Nigeria. Some wiser policy makers would have taken advantages of the diversity.

tbagjames: Research shows that most Nigerian languages will be extinct in the next 50 years. This research might be quite through judging from what has been happening in Nigeria. My reasons are as follows:
1. Town syndrome- most parents never take it as a cultural priority to take their wards to their hometowns where these languages are spoken flawlessly. They prefer to raise them in towns and cities.
2. Queen's english- i often here parents telling their wards to speak queen's english. It's difficult to hear a parent telling a child to speak Oba's Yoruba, Emir's Hausa or so.
3. Conflicts. Conflict tend to seperate large communities of a lingua. As they split, they mingle wit larger groups and take up the ways of that group thereby forgetting theirs.
4. The list is endless
you're right. I think that is what would lead to our unity in the near future.

Diversity and not politics caused the civil war. The north had series of coups amongst themselves, there were no massacre of themselves, because they were united in Islam and hausa/fulani culture.

If Nzeogwu coup had taken place in a monoethnic Igbo republic, would the rest of Ndiigbo kill Anioma people? The answer is no. The aggrieved parties would simply kill him in a counter coup, and replace him with their own,and life would continue, like north did when mutala muhammad was killed.

This would be true,if Ndiigbo had once colonized the group in question, or if the group speaks Igbo language or any of it's dialects as a second and not first language.

However, if a group that speaks an intelligible Igbo dialect as it's first language, but disclaims being Igbo. That group is cursed, and suffers from self hate/ inferiority complex( a trait not known amongst Ndiigbo), hence the group is obviously of an inferior stock, and would be deemed too inferior to bear the great name Igbo,by the rest of Igbo speaking tribes.

America like i told you, is a new world. All the whites in America trace their origin to different European groups. You can only compare Nigeria to Europe, another old world continent with indigenous people.

Lagos is not in anyway having diversity. There is peace in Lagos because the rest of the country left the politics and governance of Lagos to Yolobars, even the civil service. The day Ndiigbo would dare galvanize and massively try to share the political power of Lagos with Yolobars, would be the day blood would flow. This is so because Lagos is a land with active indigenous people, but in California USA,a certain migrant from Austria became a governor of that state, this was possible because of the fact that America is a country of migrants.

All the languages in 9geria will one day go to extinction. U may see it like a joke nd u may not live to witness it. I stand on one point that since 9geria has not colonised any country to make them speak one of our languages, our languages must must must must go. *fact*

People and their idiotic comments. Saying our diversity has brought us nothing but conflict when people kill their own fathers for money. One day, some of us will start to think and appreciate our cultural diversity.

I am a proud Ondo State indigene, and I speak Yoruba and my native language excellently and I still speak better English than these "Oyinboo by force" Nigerians. Learning one does not hurt the other.

Some posters be shouting diversity as if it applies to only tribe...smh

In sociology and political studies, the term diversity (or diverse) is used to describe political entities (neighborhoods, student bodies, etc.) with members who have identifiable differences in their cultural backgrounds or lifestyles.

The term describes differences in racial or ethnic classifications, age, gender, religion, philosophy, physical abilities, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, intelligence, mental health, physical health, genetic attributes, behavior, attractiveness, or other identifying features.

Let me be sipping my tea

were d groups that were mentioned in d original post that are about to loose their language colonised by other groups ? Colonisation is not d means by which a group looses its language its by d dominance of a larger group and d more wide usage of its language that results in d extiction of d language of a smaller group. Ps thers no need to insult people because of their stance

The groups that were mentioned in this thread have a first language which is about becoming a dead language,to be replaced by a second language which belongs to their neighbours.

In the case of the cursed tribes that speak Igbo dialects and yet deny being Igbo, there are no history of dead languages, rather what they have is their original Igbo Languages being modified by their borrowing of one or few words from their non Igbo neighbours. All the words in their language, that represents antiquity, such as King, land, heavens, water, ancient gods, etc, remain Igbo, despite their distance from central Igbo area known as the South East, and their proximity to people who speaks languages completely non intelligible to the Igbo man in the South East.

. In Africa where d history of a people is hardly written how can we dismiss a groups oral tradituons of their history. It is wrong for u to say there's no hitory of these people speaking other languages. Most of d history of d people of Africa is hardly ascertainable we only accept what seems reasonable from peoples oral history.

Most of the endangered languages are in the North and are being dropped in favour of Hausa language. Even my mighty Fulfulde language is starting to be dropped in favour of Hausa.

It's sad because in other African countries outside of Nigeria, the Fulani language is very widely spoken. Too many Hausa wannabes.

is that so? or that the conquerors did not instill their own language to foster elitism... dying out is natural with nationalism

There are many smaller ethnic groups like the Tangale, Vutes, Bade, Buras, Bolewas, Ga'anda people, Tera, etc all in the same region giving to their indigenous languages to Hausa. It's a result of smaller ethnic group being submerged into a much larger one.
