Buhari, Kwankwaso In Make Or Mar Battle For APC Ticket. by PhockPhockMan: 1:27pm On Aug 04, 2014 |
The battle for the presidential ticket of the main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, is now narrowed down to the North- West geo- political zone. Political observers believe it’ll be a direct combat between former military leader, Gen Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) and the incumbent Kano State Governor, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso. Ahead of its presidential primaries, therefore, there are also strong indications that the 2011 presidential candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Gen. Buhari, and incumbent Kano governor, Alhaji Kwankwaso, will fight in what political pundits have described as a make or mar battle for the soul of the party. The last convention where the party’s national executive emerged showed that the North- East might have been screened out of the race for the presidential ticket. Former National Republican Congress, NRC, National Chairman, Chief Tom Ikimi, who wanted to be the national chairman of the party and, who would have worked for the emergence of former Vice- President Atiku Abubakar as the likely presidential candidate, was schemed out, thus narrowing down the race to the North- West zone. In the zone, the two prominent aspirants are definitely Buhari and Kwankwaso. Indeed, many in the party’s top hierarchy, especially those from CPC, one of the parties that merged to form APC, believe that the choice of Buhari as the presidential candidate in next year’s election is a foregone conclusion. What also reinforced his choice is the backing he received from the former members of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, one of the parties in the merger. Political watchers believe that former Lagos State governor and a chieftain of the party, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is backing Buhari. But if the pressure of a Muslim-Muslim ticket would not be too heavy on the party, Tinubu plans to be Buhari’s running mate. Interestingly, at the last convention of the party, the Buhari/ Tinubu group seemed to have had an upper hand as they succeeded in working out the emergence of the former Edo State governor, John Odigie- Oyegun, as the national chairman. Kwankwaso on his part is relying on the ‘New PDP’ members that left the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and joined the APC as well the governors of the party who are insisting in controlling the APC and have also vowed that one of their own must emerge as the presidential candidate. Kwankwaso’s firm control of Kano State which resulted in the party winning all the local government seats in the last council election is also giving him an edge. Most political watchers believe that Buhari’s antecedent as a firm Islamic believer and his age, now over 79, may be defects, especially in the South. Many of Buhari’s supporters, however, believe that he is the pillar on which the hope of the APC stands in 2015, with respect to the North-West. They therefore feel that any attempt to blackmail him on the basis of the so-called desire to transfer power to the younger politicians would spell doom for the APC. It was further gathered that the young elements in the party are rooting for Kwankwaso who is believed to have cut a niche for himself as a former federal minister and governor of Kano, one of the states with the highest votes in the country. Buhari who was born on December 17, 1942 is a retired Major General in the Nigerian Army and a former military Head of State from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985. He also ran unsuccessfully for the office of the President in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections. A Fulani Muslim, he is a native of Daura in Katsina State. Buhari first came into public attention in 1976 when he became the Minister (then Federal Commissioner) for Petroleum and Natural Resources under the then- Head of State, General Olusegun Obasanjo. Before then, he served as governor of the newly created North-Eastern State during the regime of Murtala Muhammed. Buhari, widely believed to be an honest and painstaking individual, is also perceived as an anti- corruption crusader. Kwankwaso, on his part, had been governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003, and was reelected for a second term on April 26, 2011. This politician, with a political ideology known as the Kwankwasiyya Movement, was born in Madobi Local Government Area on October 21, 1956. He worked with Kano State Government for 17 years and rose through the cadre of the civil service to the rank of Principal Engineer. In 1992, he left the state civil service and vied for election into the Federal House of Representatives, and was elected as the Deputy Speaker. In 1994, he was elected as a delegate to the Constitutional Conference. In 1999, he was elected the Executive Governor of Kano under the platform of PDP and served a four-year term from 1999- 2003. He sought reelection and lost to Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP. Kwankwaso was appointed Minister of Defence from 2003 -2006 and was chosen as Special Adviser to the President on Dafur and Somalia in 2006 -2007. He was later appointed as the representative of the North-West geo-political zone in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NNDC) from 2009 -2010. http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/buhari-kwankwaso-in-make-or-mar-battle-for-apc-ticket/ |

donphilopus:Leave the messenger, face the message. With the zeroing of APC presidential ticket to North West, his only obstacle remains Buhari. Had it been he succeeded in killing him, he would have killed two birds with one stone, first, unopposed APC presidential ticket, second, massive sympathy votes for him. He has already been thinking on this line for long hence his frequent attack on the President. 1 Like |
