The Fear of Ebola It appears that some religious leaders are afraid of the dreaded ebola disease and I wonder why. Have they forgotten just how effective miracles are? For example, the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God Pastor Adeboye banned delegates from other Ebola hit countries and it appears that this was done to prevent the spread of ebola. According to the article, he claimed that his pastors should avoid laying hands on people suspected to have Ebola as they may contract the disease. But he also claimed that those who fasted for 100 days should have no fear of the disease. So which is it? Can those who fasted for 100 days lay their hands on people not just suspected but confirmed to have Ebola? If that were the case, why doesn’t he send those pastors to the infected countries to do God’s work? Or he could even go himself. After all, Jesus didn’t run away from diseases, He cured leprosy and paralysis so why is it the case that the mere ebola virus is scaring our Christian believers? Christians aren’t alone in their fear of the disease. Saudi Arabia, host of one of Islam’s holiest sites seems to be afraid of ebola too. They decided to suspend visas of pilgrims from the hardest hit countries. One would think that the infected are those most in need of God’s healing touch and mercy but they’re being kept away. Could it be that they too on some level realize the futility of religious beliefs in the face of an infectious virus? In fact, it looks like they’re using modern technological knowledge to screen people. Why not rely on God to directly tell them who is infected? Would these acts by our major religions expose the impotence and ignorance of religions and their leaders, I doubt it. My fellow Nigerians still want to believe in magic and superstition. That is why these religions will not be held accountable. From www.thinknigeria.

Catholic church suspends sign of peace

Also, the Catholic Church has instructed its
priests to henceforth suspend all forms of
physical contacts during service, including the
traditional sign of peace, which involves shaking
of hands with other worshippers during service.

This directive was contained in a statement by
the Catholic Archbishop of the Metropolitan See
of Lagos, Adewale Martins, titled “The Outbreak
of Ebola Virus – a pastoral approach.

Apart from calling for the discontinuation of
placing of water bowls at the entrances of
parishes of the church, the Archbishop
encouraged the use of gloves when counting
offerings
as other means of stemming EVD’s
spread.
