The Akwa Ibom government has announced an upward review of allowances to members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in the state.
Gov Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during the opening session of the NYSC Batch “B” camp at Ikot Itie Udung recently.
Akpabio said the state government would henceforth be paying each corps member monthly allowance of N10,000 against N6,000 that was previously paid, explaining that the review would be added to whatever amount paid by the institutions where the corps members’ serves directly.
The governor remarked that the upward review of corps members’ allowance was to enable them meet basic needs considering the increasing cost of daily living, advising them to shun high standards of living during their national service.
Akpabio stated that the state government was working assiduously to ensure that the health care of the corps members was protected from the outbreak of the Ebola virus disease, urging the NYSC authorities to ensure a clean environment at the camp.
The state chief executive officer said his administration would not shelter any corps members associated with acts of cultism and other ills of the society, stressing that the state government would continue to maintain the security of all law-abiding individuals.
The commissioner for youth and sports, Mr Monday Uko, said the ministry was delighted to receive the corps members in good health condition, adding that the state government would collaborate with the NYSC to make the national service fruitful.
Uko said arrangements have been made by the state government to make living at the camp interesting through engaging the services of reputable entertainers on weekends.
The induction of the corps members was watched by top government officials, officials of the NYSC and community leaders in the state.
