Nigeria To Songhai: What's In A Name? Is It Necessary? by OlusolaWarrior: 4:03pm On Aug 18, 2014
Professor Akin Oyebode called for a name change to be made for the country in April. The professor made this proposal at the National Conference, asking that the name Nigeria should be changed to The United States of Songhai to reflect the federal and independent nature of the country since it was no longer under colonial rule.
He said, “I propose that we change the name of Nigeria to United States of Songhai just like Nkruma changed Gold Coast to Ghana,” adding that the country is operating caricature federation. Oyebode noted that the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, aptly said the country is running ‘feeding bottle’ federalism. The conference, he added, should consider the issue of fiscal federalism, true federalism, resource control or self determination.
Should Nigeria consider a name change?
