Rep Blames Mass Failure In WASSCE On Epileptic Power Supply. by NewDelhi(m): 10:03am On Aug 19, 2014
A member of the House of Representatives, Chief Yomi Ogunnusi, has identified the erratic power supply in the country as a major factor for the perennial students poor performance in public examinations.
It will be recalled that only 31.28percent of candidates that sat the 2014 West African Secondary School Certificate , WASSCE, had credits in five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
Ogunnusi, who represents Ifako-Ijiaye constituency in Lagos, made the observation while presenting scholarships to no fewer than 100 secondary school students in Ifako-Ijaiye, constituency, Lagos, at the weekend.
The lawmaker said unstable power supply in the country was disincentive to learning, adding that it had discouraged students from studying hard.

That is plain bullcrap. Some of us actually studied with lantern. Electricity was not epileptic, it was non existent then. Majority of this generation of students simply are not willing to work hard to attain good grades. They want an easy way out which does not exist. This is fact.

Na wa o.so because you did it the hard way your children must do it the hard way. Children watch tv and read bout how responsible adults fixed their countries so that their children may prosper una de beat una chest say una be atupa warlords insta of fixing the electricity and the tractors.i believe children don't read cos they look at those that read and have nothing (una, doctors, engineers, etc clamouring for better pay and buying second hand cars) to show for it and those that did not "read" and are living large(merchants, marketmen, yahoo boys, entertainers, sportsmen and the almighty politicians ). Why invest so much effort for so little gain. Just saying

This is exactly the problem with the present generation of teenagers. THERE IS REALLY NO EASY WAY!!! Hard work is the only way, luck and God are just emotional boosters when it comes to writing exams and obtaining good grades. The same hard work that made folks obtain 9 As in their O'level in the 90's while studying with lantern can still make a student obtain the same results today with epileptic electricity. The few hard working ones actually still do, but they are in the minority. Listen to any body that pass an exam in flying colours and he will tell you that hard work is the key, not constant power supply. You don't study because 'there is light', you study because you are fired up and WANT TO PASS AS EXAM.

you just hit the nail on the head THERE IS NO "REWARD" TO FIRE THEM UP. No good paying jobs,no infrastructure to create their own jobs no nothing but hearing about missing political billions and how footballers pop champagne and entertainers wed in dubai . You can't really blame them for not being motivated.you read cos you could envision/see light at the end of the tunnel.all our youth see today is a black hole and they've logically chosen the "light". Sad but true. I say provide jobs that require competence and watch our youth excel and put in extra effort

chi God why do we have foolish leaders who have refused to use their brains to think how would they blame the failure in WASSCE on Epileptic Power Supply instead of social media television and the internet. If someone is serious and determined to pass or succeed in life Epileptic Power Supply is not a reason for him not to read his or her book when there was no light people still use to pass WASSCE with flying colours sef. students don't want to read again but they want to pass. The reward for hardwork is success and the reward for laziness is failure.

Actually, I blame them for being stuupid. All through history, people have wedded in Rome or Dubai, artistes and footballers have always lived big according to their income, politicians have never been saints, so don't paint a picture of these things starting today. I blame them for not being motivated. American government is not the most righteous, ask Snowden, but that did not stop Zuckerberg from focusing on his codes and coming up with facebook, neither did Abacha reign stop Seun. Each night any successful man spend burning his candles, thousands more are out there in the clubs rocking their sorrows away. There is no reason for an SS3 student to fail just 9 subjects. No reason at all and no excuse apart from laziness and focus on things that doesn't really matter.

Don't paint a picture of a country that suddenly changed for the worse, this country has never been better. And you should wean off this idea of 'someone' providing jobs for the younger generation to pass their WAEC exams, doesn't just connect. There is no black hole anywhere, the only place it exists is in the mindset. Thousands of Nigerians are getting well paid jobs daily, as at today, Nigeria is the major skill hub of Western Africa and is threatening to join India as the next global supply of skilled workforce. Hundreds of Nigerians, as I am typing, are receiving phone calls from head hunters from Ontario to London to Johannesburg to all parts of the world because of what they have to offer, so my friend, stop dragging the focus of those young ones down on what does not work, show them what works.

Let us not explain away our individual failures or those of our younger ones, lets tell them the truth. Nigeria must rise taller but we must start taking responsibilities. And while we chide the lazy ones, we must commend the few blazing ones for keeping the torch of excellence on through determined hard work. When many in the cities went home with 9 F9s, some in the remote villages, with no access to pipe borne water, no electricity and who still fetch their firewood in the forest to make meals got home with 9 As and Bs. They are the heroes of today and we must make them feel that way.

sorry i may not be cake to give a befitting answer cos no be full keyboard. But all i'm saying is when teachers and headmasters wore short knickers every students aspired to be one in order to escape grinding poverty (cause)and the only way to be one was to excel academically (effect) same for doctor lawyer accountant and now oil worker but as soon as they dont SEE (cause)anything that motivates them other than stinking rich politicians or entertainers none of which REQUIREs (effect) an individual to excel academically 99.999% will gravitate towards where the money is. Same reason governors rely on handouts from abuja to generating funds internally. T's the nature of the beast to follow the path of least resistance. Now take a look at the effort these "lazy" students put into nigerian idol, maltina dancehall, etc even spare part selling and you realise they are as hardworking if not more than their foreign counterparts. They simply see no reason to put so much effort into what for the most part yields very little results he any at all. Yes we have lazy students and yes we have industrious ones despite the odds but like any demographic bell curve will show the majority will follow a trend. Laziness is due to little visible reward. My hypothesis
