In 1980 (34 years ago) Zimbabwe gained independence. Robert Mugabe has ruled the nation ever since. He was re-elected last year. He's nearly 91.

Grace Marufu was President Mugabe's secretary. She became his mistress while she still married to Stanley Goreraza, a Zimbabwean air force pilot. So, Mugabe kicked her husband out of the air force, sent him to Zimbabwe embassy in China and took the man's wife. Now she's First Lady!

Zimbabwe has highest rate of inflation the world has ever seen, 79.6 billion (79,600,000,000%) per month. US$1.00 = $Z2,621,984,228 (Zim dollar).

Meaning?

Meaning that the Zimbabwean dollar is so useless it is better to just chew and swallow the physical banknote than to try to buy food with it. Nigerian currency ranges from 5 Naira to 1000 Naira. Zimbabwe's currency ranges from $Z1.00 to $Z100,000,000,000,000 (yes, ONE HUNDRED TRILLION dollar in a banknote).

Zimbabwe has 13 Million people. 60% of them are starving to points of chewing grass. The World Bank says only 10% of Zimbabwean land is arable (farmable). Zimbabweans die weekly as some can't even find grass. Zimbabwe Government survives on financial and food aid from South Africa and China. Yet, Mr. & Mrs. Mugabe's "Wedding of the Century" cost US$33 Million and their daughter's recent wedding cost about US$10 Million by conservative estimates.

Grace Mugabe (called "Dis Grace" by Zimbabweans) likes to build palaces. One palace reputedly cost US$40 Million. When public anger erupted over another US$30 Million palace the Libyan tyrant Moammar Qaddafi quickly bought it just before Qaddafi himself received the judgement of the Libyan people who dragged him out of the rat hole in which he was hiding, crying and begging for his life.

90-year old Mugabe has had multiple heart attacks and walks only with the aid of wheel chairs and special canes. But he is determined that not even death will stop him from ruling. So, like a typical African tyrant he decided his family must rule forever. He has just anointed his wife, Grace Mugabe, head of ruling Zanu-PF Party's women's league and more importantly, National Secretary. Zanu-PF is modeled after China's Communist Party so a National Secretary sits on the ruling Zanu-PF's powerful politburo.

What's the significance?

From 1982 till today the list of China's Communist Party's General Secretary is as follows: Hu Yaobang; Zhao Ziyang; Jiang Zemin; Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping
