Mutiny is death sentence, Minimah warns soldiers

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah, on Tuesday warned officers and men of the Nigerian Army to desist from any form of mutiny in the face of the ongoing campaign against the Boko Haram sect.

He warned that any soldier who engaged in any form of mutiny was risking a death sentence, as the offence was punishable by firing squad.

The Army chief, who spoke while addressing officers and men of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, was particularly miffed at the action of soldiers, who refused to serve in Maiduguri, Borno State, and other parts of the North East.

Minimah also frowned on the actions of some Army officers’ wives, who recently attempted to stop their husbands from being deployed against the insurgents.

Stressing that refusal to carry out commands, especially deployment for military action in the North East, amounted to mutiny, Minimah said, “Mutiny is death sentence.”

He condemned the action of the spouses of the Army officers, who demonstrated against the deployment of their husbands.

Warning against a repeat of such incident, the Army chief stressed that the women had no hand in military postings, which he described as a purely military act.

He added that, should the wives of Army officers repeat the action, “soldiers would koboko them.”

Minimah noted that NOWA, the umbrella body of Army officers’ wives, was not a trade union and as a result had no reason to interfere in military duties.

He wondered if the soldiers’ wives thought that the Army was “Boys Scout Movement or a Boys Brigade that they should come and disrupt army business.”

The COAS, who was in Enugu in continuation of his familiarisation tour of military formations, also assured the soldiers that the insurgency in the North East would end very soon.

He said the Army was poised to procure more weapons that would enable it to end the war with the Boko Haram sect in the near future.

According to him, with the procurement of the weapons, Boko Haram’s days are numbered.

“We are procuring more weapons for the war against Boko Haram.

“We will end the war with Boko Haram very, very soon; there is no doubt we will win the war,” Minimah said.

He noted that winning the war was the only way the Army and its officers and men could earn the confidence and adulation of Nigerians.

“Let us show the country that we can do that in the North East and then we shall walk tall in Nigeria,” he said.

The COAS also warned soldiers to steer clear of politics and politicians who might want to use them to score political points.

He said they should only work for politicians when they were on official assignments during political campaigns or elections proper.

Minimah also assured the officers and men of his commitment to their welfare

Will these weapons ever get here?

This is over 3 months now and these ordinances are still not here. Are they being ordered from hell?

See how fast weapons were delivered to the Iraqi Pershmeger forces.

Mutiny, desertion and disobedience has always had a harsh punishment levied on them so as to prevent cowardice in the military and also The wives of military officers has no right whatsoever to demonstrate to posting of their husbands to conflict zones afterall it is their duty to serve and protect the nation under any circumstance
GOD BLESS THE NIGERIAN MILITARY

@ Post,

This I why soldiers sabotage the efforts of the few who remain gallant. Are soldiers not human? These men are complaining of inadequacy of combat equipment and infrastructure, and the COAS action is to issue threats. Soldiers are dying everyday with no insurance to cover their families' support after their demise. What we keep hearing is they will procure more weapons. When some Governors raised the uproar that BH was better equipped, those Governors were tagged anti-government. Several fine officers and combatant soldiers have passed away since then.

To fight a war of this magnitude you need to keep the morale high. Unfortunately, our men have lost theirs. Since I was born till date I have never seen the amount of resistance we are seeing today from our soldiers.

Instead of issuing threats, they should re-plan the intelligence network, improve welfare, introduce adequate insurance and immediately get these men the weapons they require to put an end to this scourge.

Leadership is about influencing and motivating. Management is about, directing, coordinating, organizing and controlling resources.

When Mosul fell, as a direct consequence, it was reported on July 6 2014 that Iraq's Prime Minister Maliki retired his Army Chiefs and appointed his son, Ahmad as the new Chief of Army Staff. I was stunned to see him fit and at the battle field commanding the Army. Since then, several Iraqis have flown from abroad to join the war against the insurgents. Today August 20 2014, 6 weeks later, Mosul dam has been reported Reclaimed. This is what combined apt leadership and management entail!

Those soldiers should put in for their resignation or at best, go AWOL. Nobody is ready to die for nothing. Not even Minimah would want to die just because he is in charge of d Army.

Why don't the soldiers resign

Is it not madness to remain in a job you term risky and suicidal

Any soldier that feels he being sent to his grave by corrupt generals should do the nation a favour by resigning

They are lots of Nigerians who will do the job without running away

War is not picnic that is why only those that are mentaly prepared to die that volunteers to serve

So many Nigerians like me were denied opportunities to fight likw SIRIUS who despite poor weapons, keeps fighting.

I don't blame the soldiers but the corrupt recruitment that selected them.

in the Iraq case they were buying from actors who stands to gain in the fight against ISIS, Russia deployed it sukhoi (frogfoots) within some week of ordering by Iraq,10 ground attack jets showed up, su30's, there were even plans for Russian pilots to man the jets during the skill transfer period, Iran sent 3 of the same CTCOIN optimized jets with their pilots still running sorties in Iraq. The Iraq case is very different. The best we can do now is to swallow our pride and beg poor Uganda to help us run sorties with two of their 6 SU30mk2, it is better to beg a brother than to beg a friend (the west) with this our pilots can start getting the needed skill transfer, needed before our jets arrive.
