The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) yesterday said it has commenced a biometric data collection exercise for its men and officers nationwide to aid proper documentation.

Its Commandant-General of the corps, Dr Ade Abolurin dropped the hint during an oversight visit to the Ondo State Command’s office in Akure, the State capital.

Abolurin said the biometric data was part of improvement in the agency to help meet with the International Civil Defence Organisation Standard and global best practices.


He disclosed that the biometric data was an initiative triggered by the NSCDC management, to curtail all forms of shortcomings and boost the standard of the corps.

The Commandant General said the boimetic data exercise was to also eliminate incidences of ghost workers, frauds and all other resemblance.

According to him, the biometric would help in monitoring the performance and inactivities of its officers while problems and challenges would be attended to without delay.

He said “It will eliminate the problems associated with manual record keeping and fast track the process of interview for promotion, development course, seminar for training with names of officers that are due for such interview electronically collated and processed.


“It will also afford us the opportunity to access and evaluate the profile of personnel at a glance”

While emphasising that the biometric was not just for database collection for its personnel, the Commandant said it would also help the corps to keep records and make information of every member accessible.

He said The data would allow for updating on all information regarding length of service, transfer/posting, promotion, course attended, skill acquired, health and other important information about each officer and retrievable within a very short period”.

Andrew Igwe Ugwumba,the State Commandant of the Corps, said the initiative was a welcome development and assured that officers in the state were ready to key into it.

According to him, the biometric data would also help to reduce problems associated with officers undergoing stress, while reduceing the burden and risk of carrying about certificates and other documents each time there is a verification exercise, hence individuals fingerprint would be used instead.

The First Phase of the biometic would cover Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Kwara, Ogun, Ekiti, Kogi, Edo states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Commands
