Although export fruit crops are a major source of jobs and currency, they are now often barely viable, in agronomic, economic or social terms. These fruit monocultures often cause pollution and impoverish the environment. The markets are increasingly competitive and consumers increasingly demanding. plantain and pineapple are at the very heart of this issue, and the only likely solution is to switch from the conventional intensive monoculture systems to sustainable cropping systems.
The plantain and banana industry is worth over $100 billion globally, with more than 100 million tonnes of banana and plantain produced annually worldwide, according to FAO estimates. Banana is grown in nearly 130 countries. Uganda is the largest producer of banana and plantain in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), followed by Rwanda, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroun.

Farm and Agric Management.
Agriculture is the dominant
user of rural land,
accounting for about 70% of
the NIGERIA land area. There is
increasing demand to find
diverse means of using
rural resources to ensure
the continued viability of
the rural economy. There is
therefore need to further
develop the skills in farm
management and develop
new business opportunities,
be that farm diversification,
value added enterprises,
on-farm but non-farm
activities or other rural
developments to ensure
that the future of the rural
economy will be secured.

Banana & Plantain overview

More than 70 million people in Africa depend on banana and plantain for food. These major food staples and cash crops are important in the rural and urban economy, and social and cultural life in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Banana and plantain are grown mostly by smallholder farmers in both the East African Great Lakes zone and the West African humid lowlands for processing, brewing, cooking, and as dessert.

Banana and plantain yields, however, have been seriously declining, threatening food security and the livelihoods of millions of subsistence farmers and their families in the region. Declining yields have been attributed to soil degradation, introduced pests and diseases, poor crop husbandry, and drought. Production needs to be intensified to realize value-added chains, while sustaining the natural resource base.

Steamed, boiled, grilled, baked, or fried

Plantains served over grilled.
In countries located in Central America and the Caribbean, such as Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica, the plantain is either simply fried, boiled or added to make a plantain soup. In Kerala, ripe plantain is steamed and is a popular breakfast dish. In Ghana, boiled plantain is eaten with kontomire stew, cabbage stew or fante-fante (fish) stew. The boiled plantain can be mixed with groundnut paste, pepper, onion and palm oil to make eto, which is eaten with avocado and without pork. Ripe plantains can also be fried and eaten with black eyed beans cooked in palm oil; a popular breakfast dish. Kelewele, a Ghanaian snack, is spiced ripe plantain deep fried in palm oil or vegetable oil.

In the southern United States, particularly in Texas, Louisiana and Florida, plantains are most often grilled. In Nigeria, plantain is eaten boiled, fried or roasted; roasted plantain, called boli is usually eaten with palm oil or groundnut. In Guatemala, ripe plantains are eaten boiled, fried, or in a special combination where they are boiled, mashed and then stuffed with sweetened black beans. Afterwards, they are deep fried in sunflower or corn oil. The dish is called Rellenitos de Plátano and is served as a dessert. In Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Cuba besides being fried it can also be mashed after its been fried and be made a mofongo of fried and made tostones or tajadas, platanutres or it can be boiled of stuffed.

Agriculture has been in the fore front of the economy but most people are deviating from agriculture. Why?.
Most people see agriculture/farming as a very tedious work and are looking for white collar jobs especially our youth who just graduated from school. At these 21st century we need to change people's thinking about agriculture. Agriculture should be seen as an avenue to create employment and to also earn big. Let look at the big names going into agriculture in our great country: Mr Tony Elumelu, D'banj and the richest black man Aliko Dangote. Don't be surprised that the big names mentioned are going into agriculture. Yes they are going into it because they want to feed the world. Let us all join the train of agriculture which will take us to the promise land.

TIPS ON HOW TO BE A MILLIONAIRE IN AGRICULTURE. Agribusiness
Agribusiness is Africa’s untapped goldmine, and a major potential source of millionaires in 2016.
According to a World Bank report, Africa’s agribusiness industry is expected to be worth $1 trillion by 2030.
With up to 60 percent of the world’s uncultivated arable land, fertile soils, abundant labour, and all-year sunshine, sub-Saharan Africa surely has the potential to become the world’s biggest exporter of food products. To read the full article go to www.omonlafarms..com

Preparing our land ready for planting.
The first thing we should have in mind is to get a good land which will be okay for planting plantain. After this, clearing can commence but before clearing can start we look at the type of clearing we have.
There are two (2) types of clearing; Mechanical and Manual clearing.
*Mechanical clearing involves the use of tractor, bulldozer etc.
*Manual clearing involves human labour: this is where you involve boys in the neighborhood (employment) aboki, Cotonou/Togo boys etc.
Mechanical clearing is more expensive compare to Manual clearing.
Either one you choose to use it is okay, after clearing you gather everything in one place and burn or you leave them to dry. Some people will say................. www.omonlafarms..com

How to treat plantain suckers.
How can plantain suckers be sterilised before planting?
After preparing your suckers, you treat them with both insecticides and fungicides. Use a sachet of any of this chemical in 15 litres of water, stir very well to avoid lumps, put the suckers already prepared for planting in the propagator for 10 minutes in the mixture. You can remove and put under a shade for 24 hours before planting.
*Another way of sterilizing plantain sucker is to boil water and deep the sucker inside the boiled water for 30 seconds, remove it after 30 seconds and leave it for like 2 hours. Then you are good to plant.
* You can also sprinkle the insecticides or fungicide to the soil before planting but you should give it a space of about 60cm.
You can call us on 08038116487 for agricultural advice and start ordering for plantain suckers with rapid growth. www.omonlafarms..com
