I am a neutral person politically in Ogun State. I dont belong to any political party but we must not all shy aware from the truth.
.
Sometimes, the general public must be very steadfast in reasoning to avoid being misguided by some junks posted by people.
.
When you read an open letter to Governor Ibikunle Amosun posted by a concerned OOUite who is also a Nairalander, you may be confused to judge the Governor to be inconsiderate.
.
OOU Students Union leaders seem to be deceiving themselves in their agigation against Governor's declaration.
.
If Governor did not bother to reduce the tuition fee, wont they pay their normal exhorbitant fee and graduate? Why do they reason irrationally?
.
The fact remains that there are ten (10) tertiary institutions in Ogun State, of which all were concerned in this tuition fees reduction issue. All other 9 institutions agreed with Governors decision. Only OOU students are chasing shadow. What is their problem? Are they proving to be more intelligent than the students of other institution? Thats nonsense!
.
Answer me, Why compare lagos with Ogun? Lagos has 5 tertiary institutions while Ogun has 10. Internally generated revenue of Lagos is 400% more than Ogun's. Comparing Lagos with Ogun in terms of state education management is a total uncalledfor
.
OOU students union leaders are greatly disappointments to the institution and their parents as well.
.
If Governor did not deciede to reduce the tuition fee, wont you pay your usual exhorbitant fee and graduate. Will you have cause for any protest? The Governor declared that the reduction will take effect from next session, because of that you started protesting. Shame on you all.
.
All you should know is that you are all ingrates because Gov Amosun was not the one who caused the hike.. It was former Gov Daniel. Now the least to pay among you is N29,000 and yet still bragado....
.
I call on all their parents to take precaution, talk to their kids because there is no gain in Aluta, and to avoid any violence that could lead to lost of future leaders

Like I said on the other thread, you're devoid and starved of info on this matter. This is a common Nigerian syndrome and for that reason I'll spare your inanity!

The average OOU student pays about 200,000 per session. Pharmacy students paying 252,000 this semester.. Medical students pay above 300,000. Do the mathematics sir! What would a 40% reduction give?

So we'd be paying 29,000 and still be protesting? Are you this witless or you're making extra efforts today? Pls get yourself informed!

I dont need to exchange words with you because I'm more of a father to you in age.

But the point I may not have known before is, were you the one who fought the Gov to reduce the fee in the first place? Lets call a spade a spade..

Note, I'm not a politician but a concerned father. Your action is affecting other students who never agreed with your protest

I'm sorry to have used those harsh words on you. But if you're rich enough to afford the fees for your wards, then leave the struggle to the average and stop accusing us of been ingrates!

The governor reducing the fees was politically motivated, election-induced slashing of fees by 40%. If he had our wellbeing in mind, he'd have kept to his pre-election promises.

As a concerned father, you should also be concerned about those children whose father's can't afford the exorbitant fees. Selfishness is deep in our blood, that's why we are where we are!

Dare to struggle!

I can't understand why Amosun is blackmailing OOU students on state media.
All he is doing now is painting the students black. Free and fair elections will judge!

If i'm not lost, the real reason for this agitation is shrouded on why the reduction now that election is almost here? But, yet, rather than saying the fees are still exhorbitant, it'd be more cleared if you could stand on one spot. Saying the reduction is ill-timed and the fees still unaffordable, isn't equvalent to being double standed as the latter rubbishes the former??.

Fine, he made the promised in his manifesto (a usual case in political arena), why do u have to wait until this very moment whn the promise is fulfiled bfore u go 'haywire'

The truth is that, while a vast mejority of bonafide students of this school are out there holding hands with their parents in giving thanks to God through this govt, somebody is here shouting for what is even fundamentally against the goodwill of aluta, making common-sense deficient claims. 9 of 10 say yes! What just ONE dare to say?!

At the eve of OGD's administration, having increased it many times earlier, he further went ahead to upward the fees by almost 110%. Can someone ask where these 'dare to strugle advocates were'??

And Soon the present adm came in, it offset the increament plus additional 10% reduction and now -+62%...(all these are news), what else?
Re: OOU Students Are Ingrates, Lack Initiatives...gov by Sirniyeh(m): 11:47pm On Aug 24, 2014
Please, accept my apology if I might have quoted things wrong here. But my concern is, we all aware the tricks our politicians employ to woo the masses. Election is around the corner, you should have all neglected him and work against him during election.
.
Wisdom is principal in all things. If he could not have fulfilled his promise within 12months of assumption, then it shows the reduction is political.
.
But in such case, you should have all remained calmed as youLve done right from the beginning of his administration. If he wants to use you all for politics, you should all play politics with him as well. Students collected Fayemi's money but never voted for him. Same for Omisore.
.
Making street noice is an indication of irrational thinking. In some cases, it boomerangs on the students. Perhaps the school is closed for months, who will be affected?
.
I'm not a political fan of Amosun. I know quite well of lots of what is happening in OOU because my wife works there as a department secretary.
.
Please, I admonish you to call on your colleagues. Conspire and decided to work against him next election.
.
The whole world is watching you. Reasonable people are watching. If because you are not ready to be subjected to political campaign, riot and violence is not the best answer.
.
Please rethink...

Well
I'm set for Falconet Final match

lemme answer your questions in a decent manner for now!!

1. Amosun didn't even talk of fees reduction if u can't remember. some students have paid sef.

2. After fashola slashed the fees of LASU, socialist at OOU though of a reduction as a good thing and started protest. It was ill-planned. Students have already accepted their normal fees and payment has even started! Even many had started filling the course form.

3. It was simple, they wrote him a letter and he released how the school fees will reflect next session.

4. They protested and wanted it this session and he said it's no longer possible.

Now, think like a human,
OOU students have no foresight..why will ur socialists protest after acceptance in the first place. So, if LASU neva got theirs reduced, dem own brain no go wake up?

because of this reduction, I can confirm with first hand info that most guys have spent their fees, most girls have planned birthdays!!! That is why u see them saying it must happen. Becos they tot he will agree to this session!

But the fact is, this issue has been hijacked by other political parties! They knew it will be difficult to reduce a fee after budget has been passed and funds disbursed for so many things!

That school is a joke!

See this small scale farmer coming here to spew trash! Whoever denied you proper education hasn't done too well.

For the records, the lowest I know a department pays is about 150,000 which is chemistry department. Medical students pay over 300,000 pick up your phone and call anyone you know.. It's pharmacy that pays 250,000. Cesap is not even worthy of mention so I'm wondering why you want to die of tachycardia.

The government announced 40% reduction, are you deaf or blind? Do the maths of 40% from 350 or 250,000! Where did these mapoly students get the 26,000 from? Kila gbe, kila ju?

Would a sane person be told to pay so low and still protest? Pls just shatap and face your photocopy business! E go better!

Honestly you have no point at all.....and the poster is right, the Union championing the riot are completely bereft of common sense.

The poster have posed valid questions which you refuse to answer: Did the students or the Union fight for the reduction in the first place?

The reduction was a gift from the government.

We all know the rationale behind the reduction in fees; If you feel the motive behind the reduction is evil or the timing is suspect, why not reject the gift all together? But instead you are saying the gift is not enough.

This really is the most senseless riot ever.

Lest we forget.........

* During the era of OGD, he increased the average school fees to around 70k-100k. Pple cried foul at the time, students protest as usual. Nothing was done

* He (Amosun) being an aspirant at the time, saw this loophole and campaigned to slash the school fees. At a point, he said "if I was given the mandate of running the state, the highest any students would pay is N50,000.

* We thought, "here is the messiah" let's vote for this man.

* We vote, he won, he was sworn in......

* First few months......(nothing was happening) We asked, "what of your promise?" Our Governor said, "I av set up a committee to look into it, I will get back to you".

* After sometime, he announced a 10% reduction in the fees..... we knew this was not what we expected from him but what can we do? We thought to ourselves "let see what he will do"....

* However, every session, there is a gradual increment in the school fees........ which is now in average of N120k - 200k. (Judged the man that said the highest anybody would pay as school fees in his state would be N50,000)

* Every session, we protest the increment of school fees.....he would threatened, harrassed (just like he was doing now)

* Fast forward to 2014..... after the disaster of Ekiti state election, all APC states realized that people have been tolerating them all this while. They decided to act. First, Governor Fashola of Lagos State that has nothing to loose (since he is already running out his second term in office) decided to cut the school fees. Our Governor (Amosun) decided now is the time to act..... He cut the fees by as much as 40% across the states tertiary institutions. (Meanwhile, OOU students have been clamouring for this reduction since 2011)

* Here is the thing, the students have been paying this exorbitant fees since 2011, it won't kill us to pay for another year. But it would be injustice to slash school fees of the states institutions (taking effect from 2014/2015) when every other institutions are in 2014/2015 session except OOU which are just starting their 2013/2014 session.... U are telling us to wait for another year before benefiting from the largesse....

* And, we strongly believe the Governor lack integrity, nothing would stop him from increasing the fees again after the 2015 election. He once promised and reneged on his promise (when he still av a second term to run), nothing would stop him from reneging on his promise again (especially when he has nothing to lose after winning the election in 2015).

The reduction was a gift from the government, true. But why now? Pls answer!

Why didn't he effect the reduction immediately he resumed office? If you were around the Ago Iwoye-Sagamu area during the last election, then you'd have seen how this same SUG rallied and campaigned to have him in that office because of the reduction he promised.

We feel cheated, we feel used. I'm sorry for using harsh words, it's just painful. We just feel he wants to use us again. Why isn't anyone looking at these plights? OOU students are this and that is inconsequential in this struggle. He's playing politics with us by announcing the reduction in 2014 instead of 2011 and we are angry. The fact that we are rough and threatened violence is just childish on the part of SUG, but then if you can answer my question you'd alleviated some anger!

People want us to be grateful for reduction like normal person would do. But they failed to see how much suffering we have gone through. I remember a final year accounting student that wouldn't have graduated because of the fees. She went round begging for contributions, when she came to our house I wanted to cry.

Yoruba says it's only you that understands where the shoe is injuring you or so. It's when you have a child in OOU or see someone begging for school fees, then you'll understand that it's the struggle of the poor and average.

Amosun has played his politics, we have a voice that cannot be silenced, it's either he brings it down further or forget 2015!

Most of these people don't even knw the genesis of this stuggle by the OOU students' union. It's unfortunate Amosun is playing games with the students of this sch. I'm nt a student of OOU but i've been following the struggle for a while.

Amosun is a real politician...

I dont knw how it happened but OOU students were abt to protest the high fee and to request for a total reversal of the fee across board to #50,000 but Amosun was faster to reduce d fee by a certain percentage which the OOU students felt will have little or no effect on the fee. Having reversed it, it looked stupid to the public that OOU students have have a reason to protest again.

Matters became worse when the commisional of education also issued a rash statement to the OOU students calling them all sort of names just to give a negative impression of the students to the public.

OOU students should just retreat and like someone had earlier posted, wait patiently for election and cast their votes. OOU SUG forgot that they are fighting against the government and nt the management of the sch. The government plays the game better. The government may violate the right of the students and they wont be able to seek redress so they have to play wisely.

just reading the further replies and discussion on this thread this evening..... and my perspective is a little changed. It is true, it he who wear the shoes that know where it pinches. Those sum of school fees is really a great burden for the students to bear, expect those that comes from very rich homes.

Burdensome fees makes life of students in school lacklustre because after they manage pay the fees, there is barely anything to survive on again.

I don't expect students to be grateful to the governor because he's only doing it for his own gain. But they should have tries to employ other ways aside from riot.

Then saying 2015 is somehow, because he's attaching the actualisation to his reelection. That is not a gift at all but an ultimatum.

LARRYDKING: Most of these people don't even knw the genesis of this stuggle by the OOU students' union. It's unfortunate Amosun is playing games with the students of this sch. I'm nt a student of OOU but i've been following the struggle for a while.

Amosun is a real politician...

Well said!
We all know that all politicians must behave like politicians. But the protest is needless.
.
If I'm to be the SUG president, all I need do is to right him an open letter to be published in all dailies and to flood online with copies.
.
Expose his tricks and let him be awared that you will work against him comes 2015.
