Abuja - The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a man for a allegedly swindling an elderly Dutch woman of 200 000 Euros in a romance scam.

The 31-year-old Adio Opeyemi Michael, an indigene of Owu Local Government Area of Ogun State, is said to have swindled Jeanet De Jonge (75).

Adio allegedly met the victim on an internet dating site and pretended to be a 41-year-old American citizen working as a chef in a Nigerian restaurant.


He claimed in his profile he needed a wife.

It is alleged the profile attracted Jeanet who soon began sending money through transfer agencies.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect collected the various sums under the pretext that he was going to use the money to perfect his travel plans and obtain the required documents that would enable him travel to Holland to join or visit the alleged victim but his inability or refusal to honour the invitation prompted the petition to EFCC.

The suspect will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations is concluded.

In cases like these, people always blame the victims... But i'm glad that the EFCC is going after the perpetrators. No matter how stupid or desperate the victim was, it's no reason for her to be scammed of her retirement savings.
