People bleaching skin & wearing blonde hair. Do you think it is Colonial mentality? I've noticed this in some African and Caribbean women.
What's up with it?
Re: Black People Bleaching? by beyunce(f): 10:08am On Jul 27, 2006

I no knw whats up with all that oh. Back home in naija i used 2 tan maself coz i felt i was too light which am not really. Ironic say black dey bleach, meanwhile white dey tan undecided undecided
Re: Black People Bleaching? by PTBNaija(f): 10:41pm On Jul 28, 2006
Yeah i don't get that either! I think people should just learn to accept the color of their skin no matter what the shade. You can't expect others to see the beauty in the color that you are unless you see it in yourself.
Re: Black People Bleaching? by Izzo(m): 3:09am On Aug 14, 2006
Seeing black ppl trying to change their skin color is just outrageous. Also, most of them that do such a thing don't even take good care of it which makes them stink so so bad. What a Shame.

Re: Black People Bleaching? by Free(f): 3:58pm On Aug 24, 2006
yes i know gurl
you can have a beautiful dark skin
but nowadays most people i know that are dark are bleachin their skin
because they dont want someone tellin em they dark,

as black ppl
our idea of beauty is that you have to be light brown (skin) , not dark
some ppl even bleach thier kids at a very young age, cuz their dark
*makes you wonder*

i know this gurl she had a beautiful skin ,,she was dark and lovely
but all of the certain she was getting lighter and lighter , her face was lighter than any part of her body
she stop bleachin and now her skin is messed up!!! *am not kidding*

so advice to those who wants to bleach
You are beautiful, just love the skin your in grin grin grin grin grin
grin grin
LOVE THE SKIN YOUR IN!!!!!

Whats Up With This Bleaching Phenemeon , I mean i have some friends and the way their trying to hide from being black it's unbelivable , one in particular loves to wear Blonde weave , and loves to bleach "everytime i ask her what she rubbing on her skin" she's like "I want my body to be bright and fresh" angry and i'm thinking in my head clean your body then, whats up with that i mean why do some african/carrabien women like to bleach whats the point the body becomes uneven ,and peeling urggghh,

Some Famous sellouts/bleacher
-Micheal Jackson (maybe infact all  the jackson) angry

Black is beautifull? is this true now ?

@YinkaGal

Thank you, thank you and thank you once again for posting this thread. I've been dying to do the same myself but since I'm new to NairaLand, fear no gree me but I'm glad that you've had the courage to do so.

I use the word courage because you need it to confront people who bleach. It makes it worse if you don't bleach and your skin is a shade lighter than their's; then they feel you're trying to be funny about it and then they get all defensive and agressive.

My sister, to answer your topic, black people or people of African heritage bleach because they've been made to feel that the lighter your skin, the finer you are and they have refused to re-educate themselves so they continue to look for means and ways to look light or even white.

You want a list of famous sellouts? My sister, it's longer than my arm

*Awilo Logomba

*Almost all the female actors in African-American sit-coms/soaps

*Eucharia Anunobi

*Clarion Chukwura

*Rita Dominic

*Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde (hers is one leg in and one leg out)

*Patti Labelle (go and look at her pictures when she was younger)

The list is long, unfortunately cry cry

So as you can see, my sister, they will continue because even the role models are doing it. In fact in some cases, your chances at success are based on you skin colour; sad but true. In some other cases, you are (if you allow it) judged by your skin colour. Unfortunately, we have done nothing to change such attitudes and perceptions and so it continues. Even girls as young as 16 are getting into the act.

So black people who have allowed this mentality to be their guiding force, have bought into this myth and are harming themselves daily by frying their epidermis and dermis into crisp proportions; thereby turning themselves into the equivalent of 'boli' (aka roast plantain) in the process.

In some cases, they remind you of meat that has gone rotten i.e. fanta face and coca-cola legs/knuckles

So until there's some form of agressive re-education and information on the dangers and long-term harmful effects of bleaching, your question will continue to be asked.

However, to answer your last question, Black is beautifull? is this true now ?

The answer is yes!!!!! Look at

*Genevieve Nnaji

*Stephanie Okereke

*Lauryn Hill

*Kelly Rowland

*Caroline Chikezie

*Angela Basset

*Oluchi Onwuagba

*Naomi Campbell

*Nike Oshinowo

Fortunately, smiley this list is also longer than my arm grin grin ;

Black is beautifull? is this true now ?
.

What people need to understand is that it is inherent in the nature of human beings to be dissatisfied with their lot. Thus peole are always looking to "better" themselves one way or the other. Regarding one's complexion, black people bleach to get lighter and white people tan themselves to get darker.

Lots of people (though not everyone i must add) are not happy with the way their skin looks and I dare say it's up to them to do whatever they feel will make them better. Now whether this is actually the case (ala Michael Jackson) lipsrsealed, remains to be seen.

Conclusion = Everyman to his own. undecided undecided undecided lipsrsealed

Re: Black People Bleaching? by Blackcat(f): 7:22pm On Mar 13, 2008
Black girls/boys tone/lighten/whiten/lose some colour
White girls/boys tan/darken/get some colour

No body wants to become as pink as whites. They only want to lose some colour which is perfectly okay.

Same thing with whites they do not want to become as chocolate as Blacks, they only want to get some colour.

Girls and boys do lots of stuff to enhance their beauty or appearance. Stuffs like, perming or relaxing of hair, texturizing for both sexes, wigs, adapting a foreign accent, putting on foreign cloths (jeans, pullovers etc), denying or rejecting ones nationality and accepting a foreign one. The list is endless.
Re: Black People Bleaching? by clemcykul(f): 5:25pm On Mar 17, 2008
should we just say its a feeln of low self worth*inferiority complex* or just blatant stupidity/ignorance

how can one just wake up use some lousy product/chemicals change the skin colour to somtin else cuzz they want to feel among, be accepted and be what they r not!

am not against one caring for the skin but bleaching? yuck! your skin will be really beautiful as long as u use the cream, with tyme the cream looses its activeness on your skin and den u become a cream flirt8jumpn from one cream to the other* then as time goes on, when the magic has waned and the skin layer has depleted due to harsh chemicals, u end up with a multi colored skin by then your case is grossly irreversible!

love your self and don't tamper with your colour cuzz whoever will love u, will love everything about u. even if ure as dark as midnight.

how do u feel lovn a person known that individual's colour is not original? be sensible in this fashion crazy world.

Its crazy since we do have the best skin in the world i guess some people just have low self esteem
Re: Black People Bleaching? by Blackcat(f): 2:25pm On Apr 07, 2008
There is nothing wrong with trying to reduce the damage caused by too much sun exposure by lightening and toning. Bleaching however is not good.
Re: Black People Bleaching? by shuppie(f): 12:05am On Jun 14, 2008
oh GOD, how i love nairaland, i always laugh my heart out everytime. u lot re so funny, let those that are bleaching

continue with their act, sooner their nemesis will catch up with them, it's ok to maintain a fair complexion that is if u re

fair,, with good products that has natural ingredients in them,,,like alpha and beta hydroxy acid(AHA), glycolic acid(these re derived from sugarcane),,,kojic acid,,, lactic acid( from milk),,,,licorice, the list of these natural ingredient is endless,

all u ve to do is to read the label of products to know if they contain them or not, bleachin is not good, these natural ingredients works with consistent and continous use,,and they are safe as well, so ladies go for them,,,
Re: Black People Bleaching? by onyinye2(f): 12:08am On Jun 14, 2008
it is the mentality that the lighter your skin color is then the better you look. it is the same in the states. most guys go for the light skinned girls then the girls who are darker.

"The blacker the berry the sweeter the juice baby"

I  am proud  to be black, stop the  bleachng, stop the madness

here  a poem  for  you all, love yourself

LORD, WHY DID YOU MAKE ME BLACK?

Lord, Lord,
Why did You make me Black?
Why did You make me someone
The world wants to hold back?

Black is the color of dirty clothes;
The color of grimy hands and feet.
Black is the color of darkness;
The color of tire-beaten streets.

Why did you give me thick lips,
A broad nose and kinky hair?
Why did You make me someone
Who receives the hatred stare?

Black is the color of a bruised eye
When somebody gets hurt.
Black is the color of darkness.
Black is the color of dirt.
How come my bone structure's so thick;
my hips and cheeks are high?
How come my eyes are brown
and not the color of the daylight sky?

Why do people think I'm useless?
How come I feel so used?
Why do some people see my skin and think I should be abused?

Lord, I just don't understand;
What is it about my skin?
Why do some people want to hate me
And not know the person within?

Black is what people are "listed",
When others want to keep them away.
Black is the color of shadows cast.
Black is the end of the day.

Lord, You know, my own people mistreat me;
And I know this just isn't right.
They don't like my hair or the way I look
They say I'm too dark or too light.

Lord, Don't You think it's time
For You to make a change?
Why don't You re-do creation
And make everyone the same?

(God answeredsmiley

Why did I make you black?
Why did I make you black?

Get off your knees and look around.
Tell Me, what do you see?
I didn't make you in the image of darkness.
I made you in the Likeness of ME!

I made you the color of coal
From which beautiful diamonds are formed.
I made you the color of oil,
The black-gold that keeps people warm.

I made you from the rich, dark earth
That can grow the food you need.
Your color's the same as the panther's
Known for (HER) beauty and speed.

Your color's the same as the Black stallion,
A majestic animal is he.
I didn't make you in the Image of darkness
I made you in the Likeness of Me!

All the colors of a Heavenly Rainbow
Can be found throughout every nation;
And when all those colors were blended well,
YOU BECAME MY GREATEST CREATION.

Your hair is the texture of lamb's wool
Such a humble, little creature is he.
I am the Shepherd who watches them.
I am the One who will watch over thee.

You are the color of midnight-sky,
I put the stars' glitter in your eyes.
There's a smile hidden behind your pain
That's the reason your cheeks are high.

You are the color of dark clouds formed
when I send My strongest weather.
I made your lips full so when you kiss
the one you love they will remember.

Your stature is strong; your bone structure, thick
to withstand the burdens of time.
The reflection you see in the mirror,
The Image looking back at you is MINE!

I want to have "pure chocolate brown" akin but I cant!! I am black like brown but the clear one I want to be like chocolate!!!!!! if whites tanned their skins is to avoid some sun problem bc it seems dats the dark skin is stronger than the white one
