Jarrett Tenebe, a Peoples democratic Party gubernatorial candidate and a politically well-connected oil thief arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly shocked investigators by revealing that he received cover from several senior government officials and top politicians, including Mike Oghiadomhe, a former Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan, Tony Anenih, chair of the board of trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison Madueke.

Jarrett Tenebe
The EFCC was still holding Mr. Tenebe today after arresting him last week for alleged theft of massive amounts of crude oil.

An EFCC source disclosed that Mr. Tenebe, who hails from Edo State, told investigators that his powerful political patrons and protectors enabled him to carry out lucrative crude oil theft from Nigeria under the guise of evacuating stolen crude on behalf of the federal government. Among the political patrons are Ms. Alison-Madueke, Mr. Oghiadomhe, Mr. Anenih, a close confidant of President Jonathan, and James Jephthah.

The stolen crude oil was reportedly sold in Ghana.

The suspect came under renewed scrutiny after US investigators informed Nigeria’s law enforcement authorities that several vessels linked to Mr. Tenebe’s Fenix Impex Nigeria Limited were involved in the ferrying of stolen crude from Nigeria to Ghana via the Saltpond oil platform in the West African country.

Our EFCC source disclosed that the anti-corruption agency was able to arrest Mr. Tenebe only because US investigators were involved. The source added that, since the suspect’s arrest last week, the EFCC had been under intense pressure from several quarters to muddle up the case in order to spring the suspect free.

Our sources revealed that this is the second time Mr. Tenebe and his main collaborator have been in trouble this year. Earlier this year, the suspect and Peter Omoh Dunia (aka Peter Black), a close political associate of Tony Anenih in Edo state, were also arrested, but they were able to pull political strings that ensured their release without prosecution.

In March 2014, Nigerian soldiers, who were under the command of Brigadier General Azinta, had arrested Mr. Tenebe and Mr. Dunia. The two men’s arrest came after soldiers found fraudulent crude oil evacuation contracts in their possession. One Rear Admiral Austin Oyagha of the Nigerian Navy reportedly signed the evacuation documents on behalf of the Nigerian navy.

Following their arrest by the soldiers in Benin City, Mr. Tenebe and Mr. Dunia were caught red handed when they tried to bribe Brigadier General Azinta, the brigade commander of the Nigerian Army in Benin. Both men were in possession of $65,000, which was meant to bribe General Azinta.

Our EFCC source disclosed that the brigade commander reportedly played along with his would-be bribers for some days before arranging their arrest. The army officer handed over the bribe money to investigators as evidence against the two suspects.

However, the brigade commander was told that the suspects would be moved to Bayelsa State and handed over to the Joint Task Force (JTF). The move was part of a design to ensure their smooth release without prosecution. One of our sources told SaharaReporters that James Jephthah (aka Octopus), a very close friend of President Goodluck Jonathan, used his access to Aso Rock to obtain approval for the transfer of the case to Bayelsa where he eventually influenced the JTF to release Mr. Tenebe.

The EFCC officially declined to comment on the ongoing investigation of the Saltpond scam. However, a top official of the agency disclosed that the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, had ordered the agency not to take any action until her return to Abuja. Ms. Alison-Madueke is currently on a short vacation in the UK while awaiting the completion of the multi-million dollar renovation of her Abuja mansion.

A source at the EFCC told SaharaReporters that Mr. Tenebe’s political contacts had helped him to get appointed as an agent who sells crude oil seized from illegal marketers. The source added, however, that Mr. Tenebe’s politically powerful sponsors also arranged for the suspect to lift additional hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil, which he sold at great profit to different European oil dealers using Ghana as the point of sale.

This article just succeeded in massive name dropping without really holding water. Grievous allegations indeed but not weighty enough to involve those political elite mentioned. Someone is just trying to cause one yeye scandal. By the way, who is Jarrett Tenebe ?

Uwujaren further maintained that “claims about such invoices purportedly emanating from the Commission by any person or organization should be discountenanced as such documents would have been forged by fraudsters.”
The owner and head of Fenix Impex Nig Ltd., a Nigerian oil-trading firm, Jarret Tenebe said he had been selling confiscated Nigerian crude oil to Saltpond on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, but said the quantities were small.
Head of Public Affairs at the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Mrs. Dorathy Bassey said Fenix only loaded “about 2,000 barrels” of confiscated crude oil since late 2012.
It is unclear how much of that was sold to Saltpond but Fenix is Saltpond’s only provider of EFCC-confiscated crude, according to Sintim.
The provenance of the other oil that made its way to an Italian refinery over the course of the past year, however, isn’t clear.
Three cargoes, listed in shipping documents as “Saltpond blend crude oil,” went to Genoa’s terminal for delivery to Italy’s Iplom SpA refinery, according to shipping and port records and officials.
Two cargoes, unloaded in August 2013 and February 2014, carried about 340,000 barrels altogether, according to Genoa port officials.
The third tanker, unloaded on April of this year, carried 132,000 barrels. Together, that’s more than four times the platform’s 2013 output of around 100,000 barrels, according to the Ghana government figures.
Iplom’s President, Giorgio Profumo confirmed his refinery had received crude labeled as coming from Saltpond but said he believed the cargoes were legitimate because they are approved by the Ghana authorities.
Ghana’s customs and petroleum regulator didn’t return an emailed request for comment and couldn’t be reached over the phone.
Saltpond, meanwhile, has been a frequent port of call for at least one vessel connected with Nigerian oil smuggling.
The Wall Street Journal also reported that Akshay is a tanker co-owned by Ajay Bhatia, an Indian national who was sentenced in a Nigerian court in May in absentia to 15 years in jail for oil theft.
The Akshay traveled three times between Nigeria and Saltpond in the four months before the ship’s seizure by the Nigerian navy, for allegedly carrying stolen crude, in November 2012, according to shipping tracker service IHS Fairplay.
Two other vessels partly owned by Bhatia also travel frequently from Nigeria to Saltpond, according to vessel database FleetMon.com and to some of the ships’ crew members.
Asked about the Akshay and other vessels co-owned by Bathia, Sintim said he would look into those tankers’ activity at Saltpond but didn’t respond when contacted again.
A lawyer for Bhatia declined to comment. Bhatia didn’t respond to numerous calls, text messages and emails.

Ehn, dis is already a dead case, I can bet anything to this its going under carpet never to see d light of d day. PDP is a useless thiefing party. Its sad to note that Jonathan himself is the grand patron to these people, he a network of groups stealing oil for him, this the same person some people are promoting to come back in 2015, God should help Nigeria.

If he had all the connection and cover, how was the toothless and cashstrapped efcc that takes other from those he's connected to able to arrest him? Or has he fallen out of favor with the bigger thieves at the top and now feel free to 'spill the beans' as a way of paying back for being left uncovered to efcc?
NB: frm gej to the lowest person in pdp, including their supporters on Nairaland, they are all thieves!

A lot of economic Sherriffs are been covered by this positively-clueless administration. Saboteurs are the deciders in crucial meetings of Fg. Army is crippled for BH and our Naval force has become helpless to tackle common Oil Theft. Suddenly Nigeria has become laughing stock even in West Africa. REASON: Plunderers and hawks are on the throne
