Dust of the distribution and allocation of 30,000 Polling Units by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refused to die down, as the former deputy of the House of Representatives, Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, has called on INEC to shelve the exercise because of the controversy generated.
Nwuche also queried the rationale in INEC where all the sensitive departments are manned by northerners to the disadvantage of national commissioners.
Last week, the Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly led by former Minister of Information, Edwin Clark and former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme, asked the INEC Chairman to resign for misplacing the confidence reposed in him by Nigerians on the creation of extra polling units.
Nwuche said that it is unfair for INEC to distribute and allocate 30,000 polling units in such an unfair manner to the extent that Northern states will receive additional 22,000 polling units to the detriment of southern states receiving 8000 polling units.
He also wondered why the Election Management Board (EMB) would tamper with such sensitive election material when it is less than five months to the general election.
“The southern states are densely populated than northern states, so why the rationale in the distribution and allocation of the 30,000 polling units that is in favour of some zones against others. What is the rationale in allocating more polling units when we are having a demographic shift from north to south”, Nwuche asked.
The former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives said it is curious that the INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, would choose this time to juggle the polling units, stating, “the exercise is faulty in logic and does not represent fairness and equity.
