Unconfirmed reports indicated yesterday that the Nigeria Air Force, NAF, fighter jet declared missing by the military over Adamawa may have crashed around Gabun village near Gaanda, in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

According to local reports, villagers in Gabun on Sunday alerted the authorities about an aircraft wreckage believed to be that of the missing Alpha Jet belonging to the NAF.

The military authorities had announced that “an Alpha Jet (NAF 466) belonging to the Nigerian Air Force is missing around Adamawa State.

“The aircraft, with two pilots onboard, left Yola at about 10:45am on September 12, 2014 on a routine operational mission and was expected back by 12noon. Since then all efforts to establish contact with the aircraft have not yielded any positive result. “Meanwhile, searchand- rescue effort is ongoing to establish contact with the crew.”

This is the second time in less than two months that military aircraft in the ongoing military operations against Boko Haram insurgency group in the North-East has been involved in an incident.

On July 21, a three-man crew NAF helicopter, Mi- 35, on a training mission, crashed at Bama, Borno State, killing the pilot, while the co-pilot and the aircraft technician survived with injuries.

The DHQ, however, stated that it was established that the crash was not as a result of enemy action.

For the past two weeks, Adamawa had come under serious attacks as rampaging terrorists moved to capture Gulak, Michika, Mubi, amongst others.

The worrisome development prompted the military to launch a major offensive involving the air force and ground troops, which led to the reported stability recorded in the areas.

Meanwhile, the Adamawa State acting Governor, Mr. Ahmadu Fintiri, has offered his prayers for the safety of the crew members piloting the missing jet.

He said the prayers of the people of the state are with the aircraft pilots “for their safe return to their families”. He also saluted the resilience of the Nigerian military and the gains they are making in the war against the insurgents.

Our correspondent also reports that the disenchantment among military personnel especially within the ranks and file is beginning to receive the requisite attention as a military source said there has been a lull in cases of desertion by combatant soldiers in recent times, which nearly marred the war against insurgents.

The soldier, who spoke said our correspondent confirmed that troops were now being properly mobilised, “especially as we prepare to launch another rounds of attacks, things are not the way they were again, most of our people have decided to put the past behind them even as we await new military hardware, to prosecute this war”.

The soldier, who explained that the actions of some of his colleagues was not borne out of sabotage but rather to protest a situation which he likened to sending someone to farm without giving him any farming implements.

He said, “All that is gradually being re-addressed and we are now back to the trenches.

For the military to deploy one fighter Jet against BH, its seem like they have no other functioning one. Now that the aircraft is gone what are they going use against BH?

Thats the problem of Nigerians nowadays. If they are sent abroad for training (in this case aircraft maintenance) instead of studying hard they will be looking for BBM and Whatzapp DP or picture they will upload on Facebook.
