There are various discussions and price comparison for different sizes of Soak-Away in this forum.
Do a search and you should see plenty to read about.

Hi Hajj M.,

I searched through the forum but didn't see comprehensive discussions on soak-away/septic tank; just bits and pieces.
Kindly post some links please. We're working on ours and we'd like some guidance on dimensions and labour costs.

Btw, I noticed in a thread that Spyder talked about waterproof cement and you also confirmed using it for your soak-away.
That was not included in the quote we received. Is it only used for some types of soak-aways? Please advise.

Thanks.

Proposed dimensions and labour costs for our work. Experts please advise.

Septic tank: Length 8ft 3", width 7ft, depth 8ft 10"
Soak away: Length 6ft, width 5ft, depth 6ft

Carpenter N35000
Iron bender N35000
Bricklayer N65000

I think I read somewhere on this forum that the depth of a septic tank/ soak away must be 12ft. Please advise.

Thanks.

You are probably right. A lot of threads and discussions got deleted during the "Hackers dilemma" on Nairaland.

You can use the waterproof cement for all soak-aways but only for the one for feces (septic) that will be cemented inside, just buy some bags and mix it with the regular cement, they are real cheap at N500 per the small bag.. Mine is about the same size as above and I will see if I can dig out the cost, but your cost above exorbitant.

If I am right, below is what I spent on mine.. I did this with other jobs, so I just extracted it... so this the cost, give or take.
This is two separate ones, not joined together like some others. And I hope this will help you out.

Soak-away Cost
Sizes: 10 x 10 x10ft and 6 x 6 x 6ft
2 loads of sharp sand = 36,000
1 load of soft sand = 18,000
1 load of gravel = 20,000
450 pcs of 9" block @N140 = 63,000
35 bags of cement @1,800 = 63,000
30 bags of waterproof cement (1K small bags) = 15,000
Labour = 60,000
Plumbing Materials = N60,150
Plumbing Labor = N35,000
Iron Rod = N30,000
Iron Bender Labor = N10,000
Carpentry work on Soak-away = N15,000

Total = N425,150

@Elvis07
If you look at my picture of the bigger soak-away for feces, you will see that they did not use a column (pillars) on each side which I instructed them to use, that was a big fight between me and my brother for not following my instructions. But what they did was to "CAP" or FILL the blocks with concrete mortar on each layer as they lay the blocks, then used a cross-beam irons when they deck it. It's as stable and strong as the ones with the columns (pillars) to park cars on top, because they fill the blocks with mortar concrete from the beginning. The Bricklayer mentioned he has done several like that with no problem. But I would have prefer the columns (pillars) so make sure they use pillars on yours. And as you can see from the photos that I only used 9inches blocks only, for more sturdy and durability. Hope this little info helps too. Thanks.

thanks.

Yes. Remember that they are small bags of 1kg. But the water-proof cement are not for setting of blocks; it's for plastering.

The bigger one for the feces (Septic tank) has to be plastered... the small one (soak-away) for water waste should not be plastered so that the water can sink to ground.
Yes, it was mixed with the regular cement when plastering to make the regular cement more water proof.

Look at the pictures above..
Pic 3: small one (soak-away) for water waste (with holes in the block setting)
Pic 4: bigger one for the feces (Septic tank)

The urine, when flushed with the feces will go to the bigger septic tank; but water from the bathtubs and wash hand basin will go to the smaller one.

I used regular 12mm rod.
But if you can use 16mm for the pillars nd 12mm for the top decked, it will be very good. I would have done the same now.
