Scottish Referendum, When Will Nigeria Decide Its Fate...? by Nobody: 3:17pm On Sep 16, 2014
After following the progress of the Scottish Referendum on whether to remain within the United Kingdom or exist as an independent country, I now zoned back my lens to our dear nation Nigeria. Its no longer a secret that our country was formed based on combination of 3 different nations, and I hope someone here still remembers the date this all happened.

The British colony responsible for the formation of this nation did not TELL OUR GRANDPARENTS the entire truth, they only told us what they "believed" we needed to know. Now look at all the problems we have to deal with, from Ethnic cleansing in the North, to Religious hatred, terrorism, corruption etc.

History always repeats itself as the popular saying goes.

SCOTLAND. WALES AND ENGLAND were amalgamated together back in the 1700s, 1800s, but what they done differently from us is that they (The British Government) kept their history alive and even embedded it in their society that all three countries are independent nations whom have agreed to join together, therefore they've always had it at the back of their minds that one day each of them may have the right to become independent without the firing of canons or genocide claiming lives of millions (Biafra).

The Late Ikemba (RIP) knew this truth, yet they (British) government was hell bent on stopping him, else if he had succeeded then perhaps, the western Nigeria would have also gone their way, but the problem that would have arose is, there was no initial agreement in place before these regions were joint together as a Nation. It was UP TO US to decide how to co-exist as regions and not up to a "colonial ruler".

Scotland today has made the decision to become an independent nation, and now all that needs to be done is a referendum, how easy is that. Even if they succeed in their move for independence, both countries will still maintain several ties.

The day we begin to look into the root cause of our Ethnic problems thats when the solution will arise.

feel free to add your views.
Thanks.

Keep in mind that this referendum was 80 years in the making...and that the previous attempt by the Scots to violently separate from the British union ended in disaster in 1745 (the Jacobite uprising).

If you want a referendum for secession in Nigeria, you campaign for it by first agitating for an amendment to the Nigerian Constitution allowing for secession, then you campaign for a referendum.

But referendum do not work in a vaccum...so it is very important that you make sure INEC works efficiently...and that there are things like good electoral maps, good postal service,, etc.

You also have to decide the details of your secession. Like Biafra for eg. Do you Biafrans keep the Naira or not? Is Biafra Igbos only or Igbos plus South South? How would the oil revenues be shared? How would transport systems be run (especially the rail system)? Is Biafra a federation or a confederation? Is Biafra viable if the South South remains in Nigeria? Language of the new nation? And so on.

(A word about minorites....one reason why Quebec was unable to seccede from the rest of Canada in 1996 was because the Native American population of the province said no...and they controlled the land where Quebec's power supply....its hydroelectric dams....rested).

You want secession....campaign for it.It is hard work
