The persistence of some unknown residents of Asuboah, a town in the Asante-Akim South District of the Ashanti region to use classrooms of the district’s Junior High School as their place of convenience has finally compelled school authorities to move the classroom to a church.

The Asuboa Methodist Junior High School is one of the last buildings along the road leading to the Asuboah town surrounded by trees and some bushes. For months now, the staff and students report to school to the unpleasant spectacle and stench of faeces deliberately smeared all over their classrooms.

The District Education Directorate, which ordered the relocation of classes to the Methodist church, said several meetings held with opinion leaders and community members to bring the act to a halt had yielded no positive results. The Education Directorate says it could no longer allow pupils and teachers to be exposed to such health hazard, hence its decision to order for teaching and learning to be shifted to the Methodist Church.

Headmaster of the Asuboah Methodist JHS, Opuni Boateng, told Ultimate Radio’s Nana Oye Diabene that, he had no option than to comply with the directive since he was also overwhelmed by the situation.

“It started somewhere late December last year, but we never bothered and always instructed the pupils to sweep and scrub the mess for classes to go on. As early as February this year, it started again. At a point, we were fed up and decided not to even scrub again. It only took the intervention of the assembly member and the unit committee chairman who organized for the place to be cleaned up before we went back to school,” he narrated.

He said just a day after the clean up, “the faeces were smeared on the chalk board but not on the floor. The following day it was on the tables of the teachers. The next day it was on the boxes and this forced the District Director who took the issue upon himself to close the school.”

He admitted that the whole development beats their imagination, as according to him, the school and its staff have no qualms or scores to settle with any member or groups in the community.

The appalling situation has sadly begun having a toll on the quality of education in the district. Some of the students said the seriousness with which teachers taught in the school had declined since they moved into the church.

“Some of the teachers think we are not in school so they will not teach us as well as we were in school,” one student lamented.

Ghanaians Are the Cause of the Country’s Problems | Lazy Folks with Bad Working Ethics, Greedy Citizens with Low Self Esteem, Unproductive People Who Cannot Think Critically & MORE

grin grin grin grin grin; D
Bunch of lazy burnt offerings

I read your recent article titled “Ghana is FOR SALE, Who Wants to Buy? | The Chinese, the Koreans or the Americans?” with extreme joy and to be frank, I love the way you were straight with things. Indeed, Ghana is being and has always been ran by people with little or no clue about governance, with no sense of direction and no strong plans for the country despite their many high education titles.

However, even if we sell Ghana to the Chinese, the Americans or the South Koreans as you suggested and bring their leaders here to take charge of affairs; nothing will change because the problems of Ghana are mainly due to the over 22 million citizens and not the few people in power.

Sorry to say, Ghanaians by default are lazy and stupid and as the years go by, they’ve become even more stupid, ignorant and lazy. Ghanaians do not think and they operate as if they have no ability to think. They will rather let some supreme being in heaven do the thinking for them while they pray that things around them be fixed by divine intervention.

Ghana is one hell of a big JOKE and the comedians are the citizens who have no working ethics, resulting in poor productivity which strengthens the chain of poverty.

Look, let me tell you and those who may read this the truth, Ghana will not get any better unless the people begin to behave and think like human beings by starting to use their thinking faculties and borrow the hard working ethics of others. And while at it, they should let go their low self-esteem which controls their desire to be others, admire the food and lifestyle of others without any respect for who they themselves are and what they have.

Once again, let me say that Ghana is a joke and if there is indeed HELL, Ghanaians are already living in hell and are being punished for being so stupid, greedy and lazy.

A Ghanaian does not want to sweat and work hard, but he wants to live like a Queen or a King and they believe their God will do this for them. Instead of working two jobs to improve their condition, they will rather attend church services twice a day to increase the prospects of their prayers being heard. What a bunch of idiots put together in a country called Ghana.

Where in this world will you have so many people as foolish as Ghana, believing in superstition and all manner of nonsense—literally, refusing to critically think and make good use of their brains? It is as if the Ghanaian brain has been injected with ‘stupidity’.

The Educational system in Ghana in itself is pretty useless, all students do is chew and pour, studying stupid subjects like Swahili with no job prospects and when they come out, they blame the economy. What the heck is really wrong with us as people?

Did you not see how sane Ghanaians were fighting over second hand clothes of white men in that BBC documentary with some even saying; they prefer such clothes to the Ghanaian one even if they can afford the latter? We are just useless in thinking, in walking, in running and in making anything better for ourselves.

The leaders of Ghana are Ghanaians so what do you expect? Just like the people, the leaders have the same mind, attitude, work ethics and low thinking speed.

Tell the Ghanaian the truth and he will turn around to insult you. Present a Ghanaian the evidence or the fact and he will opt for superstition and disconnected beliefs.

Offer the Ghanaian a reliable route to change and he will opt for miracles by waiting on God to answer his or her prayers. For Christ sake, there are billions of people in this world praying to God, so why will any sensible person think he or she is so special that his or her prayer will be answered first or immediately?

God has given us brains but we have refused to use that brain, still waiting on God to do the thinking and fix everything for us. So God has come to a realization that we are stupid and he will not even bother with us.

Sometimes, I settle for the assumption that, Ghanaians are doomed. What else will explain our gross stupidity and ethics?

Go and see the Ghanaian gutters and the environment, who makes all those rubbish and puts them in the gutters? We all know it is not the government, rather the people. And when mosquitoes breed and begin to kill them through Malaria, they start blaming the Government, forgetting that they are caused of their own deaths.

While others are thinking forward with a rocket speed, Ghanaians are thinking backwards with a snail speed. We do not think logically and examine things logically to find solutions to our problems; we wait for help from heaven or from foreigners. Why must we always be rescued by others and not by ourselves?

Ghanaians are just losers who love to blame others for their own-caused problems. They will blame everybody but not themselves…

believe me, every single one of these ghanaians in nairaland are nigeria's puppet.

They talk, dress and act nigeria. The only way they can prove their superiority over normal ghanaians is by acting like a nigerian.

The average nigerian knows next to nothing about ghana, cos she's jusy nothing. Just a tiny poor country where nothing happens until nigerians came there and turned things around.

these ghanain-nigerians are not only fluent in our own type of pidgin english, they are also very conversant with our indigenous local languages

we're like a demi God to them. Go ask Nigerians schooling there how ghanaian girls makes sheep eyes at them, treating them like celebs.

Or ask our business men how ghanaian women would give anything to have them.

We're like a demi god to them. So that's why the nairaland-ghanaian rats come in to get their egos massaged by nigerian lords and queens

it's a shorter route and more personal contact to buying our movies and songs which has become Africa's anthem.

So next time my fellow compatriots, when a ghanaian nigeria-wanna be comes across your e-way, just relax, pose and talk very slowly with authority and majesty for we are indeed interacting with our subjects.

We're on the verge of colonizing that $30 billion dollar economy. the gas they're complaining about is sold for a pittance to them just to run routine maintenance on the pipes.

gayna economy is cursed and broke grin grin grin

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams says not only is Ghana’s economy “cursed” but also “broke”.

“We really need to pray for Ghana,” he told his congregation in a recent sermon which was played back on Radio XYZ’s Christian programme, ‘Voice of Action’
According to him, “somebody has cursed the economy”. “It’s sabotage…so we need to break that padlock. We need to remove demonic sanctions and embargoes on the economy and we need to command a healing of our economy and the nation and we need to command new infusion,” Duncan-Williams said.
This has resulted in 75% school children studying under trees or studying in very deplorable situation in the Rural areas due to lack of basic educational infrastructure.

Thoughts on the 2014 NBA AGC

http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/thoughts-on-the-2014-nba-agc/187927/

The Nigerian Bar Association’s 54th Annual General Conference 2014 held in Owerri has finally come and gone after all the song and dance regarding the Ebola virus disease and whether the conference should hold or not. It is said that thousands of lawyers converged in Owerri, though the exact figures are somewhat debatable. However, what matters most is that the conference held and had in attendance the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal who himself is a lawyer, his deputy Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, the Governors of Imo and Delta States, Rochas Okorocha and Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, the Attorney General of the Federation Mohammed Bello Adoke SAN, Justice John Fabiyi who represented the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Cletus Nweze of the Supreme Court, General Yakubu Gowon, former NBA Presidents and Senior Advocates of Nigeria among a host of lawyers from the four corners of the country. Whichever way you slice it Okey Wali SAN ended his two year tenure courageously and with deep faith in his belief that the conference must go on Ebola virus or no. He was steadfastly confident that all precautions would be taken, with the help of the Imo State government and that all hands would be on deck and thankfully the conference went ahead without any casualties. Even at the opening ceremony itself Mrs. Olubunmi Eyitayo of the Federal Ministry of Health (Centre for Disease Control of Nigeria) gave a most informative health talk on Ebola.
At the end of it all a lot of serious work was put into organising a conference of this magnitude with months of painstaking meetings, speakers all geared up to give of their best, with countless arrangements and hours clocked up in preparation. Would not the organisers have wanted full scale attendance at the sessions and events? Going by the robust programme on offer the topics were not only relevant but they also had excellent speakers lined up to participate. Although not one to cry over spilled milk, I am still trying to figure out and understand the rationale as to why this conference was not postponed.
Mr. Augustine Alegeh SAN who has now taken over the presidency of the NBA has his work well and truly cut out, starting with the NBA Constitution. Just as we lawyers go on about the amendment of the 1999 Constitution, let us equally look inwards and first clean out our own Augean stables, then we can successfully hold our heads high and speak authoritatively on national issues. At the moment we as an association are a laughing stock and this must end, by all means and as soon as possible.
The theme ‘Nigeria A 100 Years After’ was well thought out. I particularly found a statement by Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in his remaks rather appropriate where he opined that ‘lest we forget, let me remind us that I am part of government and when I speak out on these governance failings I neither suggest that it started today nor that I am excluded wholly from blame, perhaps in house we can apportion blame amongst us. I am however strongly persuaded that the greatest disservice that man can do to himself and society is to indulge in self-deceit. If I see magnificent economic growth indices and after traversing our rural communities what I see is worsening poverty, I should have the courage to tell myself the truth no matter how bitter’. He could not have said it better. It is just that we are a nation of people who live in hope of a better tomorrow.
As is the norm with legal conferences of this nature the plenary sessions are a must and are not to be missed. This year the topics were not just important but also significant. The first plenary was titled ‘Nigeria: Any hope for An Industrial Revolution?’ and the second, ‘Appointment, Remuneration and Discipline of Judges: the Constitutional Role of the National Judicial Council and the Judicial Service Commission’. Every sector of the legal profession had their session namely, Sections of Business Law and Legal Practice, Human Rights Institute and Judges, British Nigeria Law, NBA Lawyers in the Legislature, Military Law, Corporate Counsel, Academics, Women and also the Young Lawyers Forums, Lawyers in the Media and Law Officers all competed to give oftheir very best to this conference with the challenging topics selected and all sessions chaired by distinguished legal luminaries and speakers of outstanding competence.
The Section on Business Law session had a topic ‘Providing Affordable Housing in Nigeria: Bridging the Funding Gap’ which was presented by the lead speaker Mr. Roland Igbinoba. He analysed the Nigerian housing market where more than 80% live in rented apartments compared to South Africa where only 19% do and Ghana at 22%. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin He recommended bringing mortgages down market (and making houses cheaper), growing and developing housing micro finance and pursuing policy interventions all along the value chain.
Another session that stood out was that of the Law Officers with the topic ‘Prosecuting Terrorism and Crimes Against Humanity, Nigeria v Rest of the World’, chaired by R.A. Lawal Rabana SAN with speakers including the Attorney General of the Federation in this instance represented by Labaran Shuaibu Magaji, Mr. Charles Adeogun-Phillips of the International Criminal Court and Ahmed Raji SAN. In this session we were made to understand that Nigeria has attempted to reform in line with the Global Terrorism Convention and thus the power to prosecute terrorism which was originally given to the President is now conferred on the Attorney General. Furthermore, terrorism cases are being fast tracked but the challenge, not surprisingly, is the absence of counsel to defend terrorism suspects as no one wants to be so stigmatized. Mr. Adeogun- Phillips in his own presentation stated that ‘on the 21st of November 2001, Nigeria ratified the ICC treaty and the implication of this is that Nigeria becomes a member of the International Court. One valid provision in the International Criminal Court (ICC) statute is that it operates in conjunction with the domestic laws we have and is not a substitution thereof. Accordingly, there has to be proof that Nigeria has actually investigated the act and failed before the international law can be upheld. The proper procedure is to domesticate the international law into our own laws so we can be able to prosecute these crimes. It is suggested that every member of the treaty should be given the opportunity to prosecute these crimes first and then if it fails to do so, the international court can thereafter intervene. This is what he referred to as the ‘do it yourself’ approach and that we need certain mechanisms in place to do this.
The Annual General meeting itself provided for the presentation of reports by various legal bodies such as the Council of Legal Education, Corporate Affairs Commission, Legal Aid Council, National Human Rights Commission, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and the Law Reform Commission. Of particular interest was the report by the Council of Legal Education (CLE) which stated that Professional Ethics has been reintroduced as a separate and distinct course with the establishment of a substantive professional ethics and skills department in all campuses. One of the challenges faced by the CLE is the violation of admission quota by universities which has stretched their human and infrastructural facilities over the years and this is oftentimes done with impunity. In a bid to foster continuous legal education, the CLE is forging a partnership with Ethics and Advocacy Africa, a US based non-profit organisation whose mission is to assist in building the capacity of qualified lawyers for better service delivery.
The Council has also concentrated on renewal and completion of ongoing projects such as the completion of the abandoned students’ hostel and repair of the Sir Adetokunbo Ademola Hall in Lagos, completion of the students’ hostel in Enugu campus, completion of the hostel and staff accommodation in Kano and so on and so forth.
In view of the inadequate funding by the government, the Nigerian Law School (NLS) which comes under the auspices of the CLE and has decided to seek ways to get support and donations from its alumni, and also open an alumni development office.
When all is said and done, what comes next with all these worthy recommendations, reports and communiques? The Government of the day need not look any further: the NBA should be on hand to help this country reach its heights if - and only if – it has willing collaborators.

80% of accra residents live in slums - farouk braimah

The chief executive officer of the People’s Dialogue on Human Settlement has said 80% of Accra’s residents live in slums.

“There are basically two definitions we can ascribe to a slum. We identified five key areas; the one that talks about improved sanitation, the one that talks about clean water, the physical condition of the house, tenure security and overcrowding,” he said.

Speaking on Our Cities, Farouk Braimah said his outfit worked with the UN and Ministry Of Local Government to find a localized definition of slums and they discovered that some slums had grown, matured and nothing could be done about them except for regeneration.

“There are different categories of slums. We have one that has grown and matured and there is nothing we can do about it unless you wipe them out or do some regeneration; and we have the smaller slums which are more transient and we can deal with them by getting the people out of the area,” he stated.

Mr. Braimah further stated, “If you have a settlement that provides toilet facilities for a hundred people and the population increases to five hundred and you don’t expand the network of toilet facilities, there is definitely going to [be] an over-stretched pressure on this facility.”

“Over a long period of time, we have not had a significant improvement in housing… The houses are not there; the infrastructure is not expanding and more people are moving in so definitely, we’ll have a rundown tournament,” he added.

Ghana On the Road To Purgatory

The labyrinthine subterfuges designed to rape Ghana’s economy until there was nothing left in the national coffers may have gone undetected for a few years, but not any longer. When Dr. John Atta Mills lost his life tragically at the Osu Castle a few years ago – shockingly, the cause of the president’s death has still not been disclosed – many welcomed the serendipitous elevation of John Mahama to the august office of head of state, believing, perhaps, that Mahama’s ascension would compensate for the criminal and bloody removal of Dr. Hilla Limann, the only other person from the northern part of the country to have served as president of Ghana. The preceding hypothesis may explain why John Mahama was elected president in December 2012, after campaigning for only three months against an experienced, charismatic, been-there-done-that challenger, notwithstanding the brouhaha that surrounded the post-election lawsuit filed by Nana Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party that took more than six months to resolve by the nation’s highest court.

The overt corruption taking place in Ghana today is unprecedented in the annals of the nation, more so because Ghana has had the misfortune of being ruled by mobsters, gangsters, and Mafiosos parading as military officers. If anything, one would expect military dictatorships to perpetrate the worst atrocities and engage in the vilest practices against their own citizens, but what is happening in Ghana today makes the combined dictatorships of Kutu Acheampong, Fred Akuffo, and Jerry Rawlings look like child’s play.

When I wrote an article several months ago condemning the garrulous and dogmatic attacks on Victoria Lakshmi Hammah by ostensibly chauvinistic nabobs, I did so believing that Ghana’s – and Africa’s – patriarchal and androcentric beliefs have remained at odds with the elevation of women in society, and I felt aggrieved that we were missing the chance to improve the statuses of women in Ghanaian society. Little did I know, at the time, that Victoria Hammah was not in government to serve the people; rather, the former deputy minister of communications had a singular goal: to amass as much wealth as possible, presumably on the backs of the suffering Ghanaian taxpayers, within the shortest space of time. It was a shocking fall from grace for a woman who seemed bent on making her mark as a devoted, conscientious civil servant. And Victoria Hammah is only the tip of the iceberg in an exceedingly corrupt John Mahama-led administration.

When Ghana’s Black Stars went on a rampage in Brazil and threatened to walk away from a FIFA-scheduled match because their bonuses were still unpaid, it took the intervention of the president of the republic to calm frayed nerves, get the “obstinate” players to honor the match, and prevent what would have been the greatest embarrassment suffered by a nation-state in contemporary times. What most pundits forgot to ask, however, was why the players would display such recklessness, knowing very well that the entire nation – and the rest of the world – was watching.

Ghana became the laughing stock of the media in Brazil when President Mahama instructed someone to fly a large amount of cash to Brazil to prevent the players’ boycott of the aforementioned soccer match. The myriad of reasons provided by the government for taking this ill-advised action only worsened the furor surrounding the whole saga. And I dare state here that rehashing those pathetic reasons serves no purpose at all. What John Mahama should have done – as soon as the team and the unpatriotic Ghanaian delegation returned to Ghana – was to dissolve the GFA, sack Kwesi Nyantakyi and his cronies, and then wait for the corrupt FIFA hierarchy to suspend the country from organized competitions. The last time I checked, no serious nation on God’s Earth relied on soccer to feed its citizens. Unless Ghana’s leaders are willing to take drastic measures to address the twin cancers of corruption and ineptness, mediocrity would remain our watchword.

As the claims and counterclaims surrounding the embarrassing performance in Brazil reached the local airwaves and inundated pro-Ghana(ian) Internet portals, it became clear that government officials’ willingness to pay as much as $25.00 for a single coconut to scantily clad, hourglass-shaped Brazilian damsels at popular beach resorts may have angered many of the loyal players, reminding the latter of the popular Ghanaian refrain, “Monkey dey work, baboon dey chop.” Instead of investigating these corrupt government officials who traveled to Brazil for no other reason than to claim unmerited bonuses on the backs of hardworking Ghanaian taxpayers, senior government officials validated the expulsion of players who complained about team officials’ excesses and profligacies!

When Ghana’s Minister of Education, Professor Opoku-Agyeman, recently perorated that Ghana’s educational system ranked among some of the best on the African continent, it became clear that the group of oddballs ruling the nation must have considered the majority of Ghanaians unlettered and uninformed. With the overwhelming majority of the nation’s senior secondary school students barely able to communicate comprehensibly, we can only wonder how this minister of state drew her conclusions about the nation’s “endearing” academic landscape.

If news filtering out of Ghana that the Commissioner of CHRAJ, Lauretta Vivian Lamptey, has over an eighteen-month span caused financial loss to the state in the amount of $148,000 is true, then I wonder if John Mahama is really in charge of the state of affairs. Ghana remains one of only a few nations with extremely lavish benefits for top government employees. Ghanaian ministers of state must find their own places to live – and pay the rents out of pocket. In a country where government cannot provide its citizens with uninterrupted electricity, purportedly because it lacks the resources to do so, one can only wonder how these “apprentices” got the baton handed to them to steer the affairs of the nation.

What is happening in Ghana is no laughing matter, as the nation is teetering on the verge of irremediable economic and educational collapse. Ghana is in serious trouble, and I hope that those tasked with handling the nation’s affairs would wake up from their collective slumber, gird their loins, and begin on a path that would restore hope to the nation. I truly hope that John Mahama would wake up, make difficult and necessary policy changes, restructure his administration, dismiss incompetent officials, rein in party aficionados, and take charge of the nation like the leader that he is supposed to be. Wake up, John Mahama, before it is too late.

I Want To Be An Armed Robber In Future …3 -Yr-Old Pupil Tells DCE

There was utter shock and disbelief at Asuogyaman in the Eastern Region when a three-old KG pupil confidently disclosed to the District Chief Executive (DCE) and his delegation during ‘my first day at school,’ visit that he aspires to become an armed robber in future to enable him become rich.

The shocking answer was a response to a question the DCE, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, asked the children regarding what they aspire to become in future.

When asked if he understood what armed robbers do, the KP pupil remained silent for minutes forcing the DCE to issue a directive to the guidance and counseling unit of the Ghana Education Service to take the pupil through counseling and send their report to his office for further action.

The DCE stated that the assembly will make sure that the pupil gets the best of support needed throughout his education to ensure that he grows to become a responsible citizen in future. The DCE and his entourage made up of officers from the district education office led by the district education director, Mavis Yirenkyi visited schools such as Akwamu West Anglican Primary, Akosombo Beasley, Akosombo VRA Roman Catholic School, VRA Presbyterian Primary School, Nuriya Islamic and Pupuni L/A Primary School.

Mr. Nyarko encouraged the pupil’s especially, the newly-admitted KG pupils to take their studies serious by being punctual and learning hard. He told the pupils that the only way for them to be rich is through education, adding that there is no short cut to success; therefore, they must not joke with their education.

He emphasized government’s commitment to continuously invest heavily in education by making sure that facilities needed to enhance quality education are made available to them

lezz: believe me, every single one of these ghanaians in nairaland are nigeria's puppet.

We're on the verge of colonizing that $30 billion dollar economy. the gas they're complaining about is sold for a pittance to them just to run routine maintenance on the pipes.
lmao u foolish twerp! Do u know the number of ghanaians topics, threads opened for ghana by nigerians and comments passed by nigerians about ghana on this forum? We ghanaians just come here to correct you about the lies u tell about us. Believe me, we dont behave nigerian , we are proud to be ghanaian. A proud blackstar. Oseeyie GHANA! GHANA FOR LIFE!

"We found U.S. military personnel on the ground in a whopping 148 countries -- even more than Paul had said"

Source: PolitiFact.com

"He said Ghana was also working with the USA to establish a Rapid Response Unit in Ghana to ensure conflict prevention in the country and the entire sub-region."

Rawlings just warned African countries to be wary of aligning Africa to the militaristic, western NATO, war Chariot. Nkrumah warned about it in all his writings and speeches.

CNN President Mahama just gave a hint of establishing a US military base in the Slave Coast. Mahama vision is just ONE..the destiny of Ghana is linked to the advancement of US and Western interests.

The so-called TAMALE AIRPORT is nothing but a US MILITARY AIRSTRIP/AIRBASE...From there, AFRICOM/ NATO would launch attacks on African nations that refuse to conform to US/ WESTERN imperialistic rules.

For this reason, the former DEFENCE MINISTER, Lieutenant General Joseph Henry Smith has been clandestinely appointed Ghana's Ambassador to the United States of America...to mainly negotiate and facilitate the establishment of the US military base in the Slave Coast.

If no AFRICAN country accepts to host the AFRICOM/NATO BASE in Tamale, the Slave Coast alone would welcome it.

NATO/AFRICOM boots on Ghanaian soil.

Yes, I said it! Go hang yourself if you disagree. We are supposed to be a sovereign nation whose citizens should be boasting to the outside world of our rich cultural heritage and prosperity; in stead, we project poverty and inferiority complex. Our forefathers toiled to dissolve the umbilical cord that married us to the colonialists, only for greed and abject stupidity of our leaders to derail our progress, leaving our country worse than the colonialists left it.

For one, Ghanaians suffer collectively from inferiority complex. That should be common knowledge to all. We would rather glorify foreign customs and norms than our own. How do we live in a country that has a bona fide currency but locally trades in the United States Dollars (USD)? Did we run out of Cedi? When?

The following incident prompted me to write this article: A couple of days ago some coworkers of mine and I had a brief discussion about Ghanaian architecture and how much houses are generally sold for. It was easy talking about Mediterranean, contemporary and modern architectural flairs that grace our cities. The discussion went smoothly until we “googled” the cost of houses in Ghana. We were taken to multiple websites, among them Ghanaweb.com. What did we see? Every house was priced in United States Dollars. “Don’t you have a currency?” was asked of me by my coworkers. I have never been this humiliated in my life! (Please see: http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/realestate/luxury_houses.php, http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/realestate/bargain_houses.php, http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/realestate/apartments.php, http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/realestate/uncompleted_houses.php, http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/realestate/residential_rentals.php, )

Every land or house advertised for sale, completed or otherwise, is in dollars. Being domiciled abroad for decades, I just noticed that this practice has been ongoing for far too long.

If the US dollar is our medium of exchange in many quarters, what then is the purpose of our national currency, Cedi? Are we that stupid as a nation?

Talking to my brother-in-law about this, I discovered that a significant number of Ghanaians converts their earnings into foreign currencies and open foreign accounts with them in the country.

Delving deeper into the subject, I came across several articles online stating the devastating impact of this practice on our economy. (http://business.myjoyonline.com/pages/banking/201206/88229.php; Joy Online News: Statement: BoG has not taken any decision to close foreign deposit accounts [http://business.myjoyonline.com/pages/news/201206/88007.php]; Joy Online News: Foreign currency account holders to pay the price for Cedi depreciation [http://business.myjoyonline.com/pages/news/201206/87998.php]; Joy Online News: Government denies plan to ban dollar accounts [http://business.myjoyonline.com/pages/news/201206/88030.php]

Did our elected officials just realize the devastating impact of this practice on our economy? I mean are they plain stupid, grossly uneducated, simply nonchalant—or all of the above?

Point number two, it is also common knowledge that Ghanaians are a peace-loving and hospitable people. These are virtues I brag about always. But, to what extent, should we allow people to filter through our porous borders into our country? Talking to my friends and family in the Central Region, Kumasi and Accra, it is known that Ghana is now overcrowded with Nigerians. What’s more, their so-called 419 scams have crossed the Nigerian borders into ours. They have flooded our country to the extent that Ghanaians can’t enjoy peace. It’s annoying enough to be called at 5 am from Nigeria about an order from Microsoft, which one didn’t place; and it’s a whole different story to flood another country and become a nuisance. Didn’t a Nigerian kill his Ghanaian girlfriend just this month? (See http://news1.ghananation.com/headlines/261803-nigerian-man-kills-19-year-old-ghanaian-lover-and-tosses-body-in-neighbor-s-compound-photo.html). Did this murderer have the guts to do this because Ghanaians are too stupid, too lax and too accommodating when dealing with foreigners?

Again, didn’t a Nigerian criminal forge the signature of one of our ex-president’s (Kufour’s?) for a shady deal that was later uncovered? Haven’t we heard of many Nigerians implicated in armed robberies in Ghana?

Worse, friends tell me there are loads of buses of people from Nigeria coming into Ghana daily. The annoying thing, as one pointed out, was a bus with an inscription that went something like, “Nigeria: A country of Good People.” I don’t think a genuinely good people would advertise themselves that way. Can this be a cover-up for who they really are? Or is it meant to divert attention from who they really are?

What’s more, any discernable individual who has the guts to talk frankly about Nigerians in Ghana is often confronted with, “We have businesses here, and we pouring billions of dollars into your economy.” For one, Ghanaians didn’t ask any Nigerian to start a business in Ghana. Two, Ghana as a whole benefits from a net negative impact of Nigerian presence in our country, all things considered. If starting a business in Nigeria is not feasible for them because of corruption and the political atmosphere, tough luck!! They should look to the Middle East and North Africa for answers: Arab Spring!! We have many problems plaguing our country and we don’t need their presence, which complicates life for us.

Is it being alleged here that every Nigerian is a criminal and nuisance? No! However, there are too many fraudulent acts committed by too many Nigerians that it’s difficult for most Ghanaians to separate the good from the bad. Even in the United States and United Kingdom, there are Nigerians who hide their “Nigerian identity” when dealing with others. If some Nigerians feel uncomfortable disclosing their country of origin because of fraud commonly associated with them, then perhaps many can excuse my ignorance.

My Ga siblings are upset over the procurement of their lands by other tribes, mostly Ashantis. Do Gas know that many foreigners, mostly Nigerians, are snatching up their lands? I will admit that we are literally selling our country to foreigners, and if this trend should continue in that trajectory there will be nothing left for the future generations.

What about the Togolese, Fulanis and other “illegal” foreigners in our country? It is no secret that individuals from countries bordering Ghana easily move to our country as if Ghana is a city in their own country. Being close to Ghana doesn’t make one a Ghanaian, just as being born in Mexico doesn’t make one a citizen of the United States. Our leaders must do a lot to prevent influx of people into our fragile and poor economy. Do I expect them to heed this advice? No, because they are preoccupied with stealing public money.

Do our elected leaders see this as a problem? Sadly, no! Why? It is simply because they only care about money they will make from shady deals and not the wellbeing of the general populace.

Point number three: Our elected leaders are a disgrace to our country. They would sell the soul of our country for a pittance. Corruption is so prevalent in our political culture that there are only a few good politicians, and even they are endangered species. One needs to take a cursory glance at our many national ills and will realize how incompetent our leaders are.

Both the NPP and the NDC are corrupt to the core. Politicians from both parties have lost any shred of trust we have in them. We should all shy away from the partisan nonsense we are mostly engulfed in and fight for the one country we all call home.

How many politicians from both parties haven’t being implicated in corruption? The sanest politician in Ghana, I must reluctantly admit, is probably Rawlings. However, he presided over corruption for decades and his current utterances directed against corruption in his own party are just a means of venting his frustration for the mistreatment of his family by the party he founded.

On the same score, it is no secret that I admire Kwame Nkrumah for all he did. However, I loathe the man for making Ghana a part of ECOWAS. We should expel all foreigners who are in our country illegally and opt out of ECOWAS if needed. We are a sovereign nation and capable of such acts. Our country is on the downward spiral and may continue in that direction if such stringent measures are not taken. We should welcome professionals and citizens from other countries who will further our development, or people who apply to enter our country legally in search of “greener pastures.”

All the same, we should put a cap on the number of people entering our country “legally,” for we still remain a poor country. We are not the United States. We are not the United Kingdom. Our country will remain unsustainable if we continue to open our borders to anyone who wants to come in. We are suffering and something has to be done.

Ghana, wake up!! Our low self-esteem and lax attitude as well as our greedy and selfish leaders are destroying the very fiber of our country. We have been stupid and have acted stupidly for far too long!! Wake-up, Ghana. Wake-up, Ghana. Wake-up!!!
