Fans Mock Desmond Elliot Over Yoruba Name by Ndkings1(m): 9:13pm On Sep 19, 2014 |
Shortly after he declared his intention to run for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly and coming out with his campaign posters, Nollywood top actor, director and producer, Desmond ‘Olushola’ Elliot, has been put under fire by his fans, who are surprised at the realisation that he has actually has a Yoruba name, one he has never used until now. Some of his fans believe he decides to identify with the Yoruba name because of what he wants to achieve and are not happy with him. They believe that he is only putting out that name so that people will see him as a Yoruba man, something he guarded jealously before now. The sudden adoption of the name Olushola has drawn a lot of talking points, even from his colleagues, especially the Yoruba speaking ones who say Desmond never identified with them and never accepted that he was a Yoruba man, only accepting the fact because he wants to go into politics. Some took to social media to express their dismay at the sudden cropping up of the name Oluwashola. One Blessing Efam had this to say: «Very sad. Like Jonna who added Ebele to his name in other to fool the Igbos, this one has also added Yoruba name to his name, just to get the votes of the ignorant people that will be carried away by his fame and vote. MzEloh wrote on Desmond’s Instagram page: «And ‘Olusola’ comes out. I thought he was from Delta state? Desmond choose one, actor, filmmaker or politician. Azeez Oluwaseun had this on Facebook: «Olusola… Laughable! Well, let the best man win. If he has anything tangible to contribute, then he should be given a chance. The new name he added though, is laughable. «Is that supposed to garner more votes for him or what? LOL! Are we Yorubas mediocres or are we short of intelligent Yorubas who can vie for office? Why the new name? Tobena blasted on twitter: «This is really funny, though, did he suddenly remember his ancestors are Yoruba, abi where did Olusola surface from, nawa oh…Olushola ko! Olushola ni! «So all of a sudden, he remembers he has a Yoruba name eh! Guy, contest if you want but don’t come up with any name thinking it’s gonna change anything! «I’m sure GEJ is your role model cos you’ve started towing his path of adding Ebele to his name to gain favour with the Igbos. Small time you go come dey tell us how you no get shoe and you dey trek the streets of Lagos! «Who even knew this dude was Yoruba? He never identified as one and now all in the name of politricks, his name is Olushola…..Oga park well biko! Mimi wrote on twitter: «I don’t have a problem with him going into politics, but the fact that he never proudly identified as a Yoruba man (used english names, never spoke Yoruba or did anything to signify he was Yoruba), but all of a sudden, because he’s running for office in Yoruba land, whips out his Yoruba name, tells a lot about his dodgy intentions. It’s such a cunning and manipulative behavior |

Why are Yorubas so tribalistically petty? The point is, Olushola or not, is Desmond Eliot a Yoruba person? This is not difficult to figure out, no? What makes him Yoruba? The fact this his father is Yoruba? Yes? No? What makes him a non-Yoruba? The fact that his mother is not Yoruba, even if his father is? Or the fact that he has two English names? 4 Likes |

In the South-West most people do not use their middle names. And hey! it's politicking- anything goes. At least he hasn't resorted to mud-slinging and crime like others have been doing to score political points. Am Ibibio but I also have a Yoruba name. What stops me from using it if it'll help further my cause? The more you argue about his new name, the more campaign you all do for him. |

William Jefferson Blythe III changed his names to more acceptable ones, which sounded more Northern than Southern. He succeeded by becoming a two time President named William Jefferson Clinton. As if that were not enough, he reinvented the names to what are now known world-wide as Bill Clinton. Nna, make una leave Olushola Elliot alone, na political expediency dey drive am. him for even spell the Olushola as Olusola sef. 3 Likes |

Just for our information, EBELE is actually GEJ's Ijaw name and it has a different meaning from the EBERE OR EBELE you find in Igbo land. For his campaign, AZIKIWE was added to his name when they realized that the EBELE was actually Ijaw and not Igbo. Just thought we should know. As for Desmond Elliot, I think he should have stuck with the two name he has used all these while rather than insult his voters sensitivity with the new name which he never used. That alone will bring his motive to question. Why does he think a new Olushola can win him something that popular Desmond Elliot can't? 1 Like |

If you never knew Desmond Elliot was Yoruba then you're not really a fan of his. Like someone asked earlier, how many actors or actresses use their full names ? I know his younger siblings by their Yoruba names alone and never bothered about asking their English names. We only call or address people whether friends or enemies by the names we've been introduced to and no time has it ever been necessary for Desmond to tell the wider public that his middle name is Olushola.... You guys should get a life abeg 1 Like |

This guy has been in the lime light for like how many years now: at least , at least over ten years, and not once did he give any have hint or even the smallest clue, that he has Yoruba lienage. That has to be a deliberate act by him. He definitely is not proud of his Yoruba Heritage. Almost everyone believes he is an Ibo guy. Those who think he's not Ibo will assume he is Niger Delta. This guy has been in interviews, he's been photographed with his beautiful family, and yet not once did anything came out even by mistake that he is a Yoruba man. People will definitely have problem voting for him. There are Yourba Politicians with complete English names, but they've never being mistaken for anything other than a Yoruba man. 1 Like |

BuddahMonk:These are two different things. As a yoruba, you must first be identified with your root before any other thing. Check all Yoruba leaders, 90% of them have their first names as Yoruba but the same can't be said about Igbos. 1 Like |
