Nairalanders Share ur experience of ur crashed external. Hard drive,how did u feel , what did you do?, were they vital documents in it. and what did u do to recover them?

The data could have been recovered if you knew how. The short-cuts were created by a virus to aid its execution on other systems.

First right-click on the drive and check on its properties to be sure the data hasn't been deleted.

U can also use SAMDAV anti-virus...to recovery ur files

There are few things u can do to get a crash HDD into working again but non is guaranteed.the chance is 50-50( try it after all u have nothing to loose) my external fell down n it stopped working,I did d following
1. Looked for a working hard drive the one that got damaged was western digital so I removed the panel from the working one to mine.to my surprise it worked ( in this case it's not the read write head that's affected but the board )
2. If after changing the board and it still does not work your problem could be that the read write head has shifted,u can gently tap the HDD to see if the hooked head could be released.
After these two steps I go just forget am but I have used these method to safe many HDD
Pls note that before a HDD finally crashes it gives audible noise it's time to backup when u start hearing cra-cra-cra when it spins
