Bankole stopped from breaching airport protocol

An attempt by the House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, to breach airport protocol was blocked on Thursday as he attempted to drive through the airside of the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos.







He arrived the airport in an Air Force aircraft at about 4.30 p.m., and had wanted to avoid the heavy traffic on Airport Road.

His convoy was heading to the gate of the airside but aviation security and policemen stopped it.

He and his team were held up for more than 20 minutes while his security details talked to the security personnel who, in the end, refused to yield to pleas to open the gate.

Bankole, who as usual had shunned journalists, remained inside his black jeep and looked embarrassed.

Experts say driving on the airside contravenes the regulation of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which does not allow firearms into the airside.

There is special training for drivers who ply the airside and they carry amber light. Any vehicle without such light is not allowed.

Besides, there is special communication arrangement between the drivers, the airside and air traffic control

Drama unfolded at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Thursday when airport security officials stopped the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, and his security details from breaching safety rules at the airport.

Bankole, who arrived aboard one of the presidential jets with registration number 5N-FGP had wanted to pass through the airside to link the hajj camp where he was meant to address the 2008 Muslim pilgrims.

A heavy downpour earlier in Lagos during the day had caused heavy traffic at the airport as the access roads between the international wing and domestic were all flooded.

On getting to the airport tarmac gate, which led to the airfield, Bankole was refused entry by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria security men stationed at the gate.

Controversy, however, ensued between the Speaker's entourage and the FAAN security officials when the Speaker and his cars stood still at the gate for about 15 minutes while the argument lasted.

However, when the Speaker's aide could not prevail on the FAAN men, they eventually left as aviation correspondents were already gathering at the scene.

Our correspondent gathered that the Speaker and the protocol officials were not ready to listen to the safety and security implications of such moves.

The airside is a special place where vehicles that do not carry amber light are not allowed to enter.

Aviation professionals said this was because aircraft landing could mistake such vehicles to be something else.

The Media Adviser to the Speaker, Mr. Kayode Akkinmade, said he was not at the scene in Lagos, but promised to get further information on the issue.

When he was later contacted, he said he still could not get information on the matter as the Speaker and his team were airborne on their way back to Abuja.

That is what we call lawlessness. How can a lawmaker not obey international safety laws?
Can that happen in developed countries?
Those airport officials deserve awards from NGOs. That is the kind of boldness we need.
Bankole is not above international civil law.

Bankole and people (like me who admired him) should be thoroughly ashamed. A few months ago, we all rejoiced at his election, his education, and potential. He studied in the UK, and he knows nobody should be above the law when it comes to national and international security of airplanes and passengers.

As an educated Nigerian exposed to law and order, he should hang his head in shame for that disastrous decision to breach airport security. He belongs to the new generation of politicians and should try to be a little bit different from the vampires that have been draining the life blood from our beloved country.

The security officials should be commended for such a brave act because they prevented a LAW MAKER from breaking the LAW. A very big irony i should say!
