whitecat1: This sorry arsse excuse of a human being as a minister of health Chukwu is trying too hard to make a name for himself! What's the point of canceling what has been here before most of us were born? This environmental sanitation has helped neighbors to know each other, meet and interact for years.

The inspection will help increase robbery, as he will employ ibos en masse to spy and rob their perceived enemies.

This must be resisted by Yoruba and Hausa. In a country like Nigeria, we just can't afford opening gates for people in the name of inspection, anyone can find uniform and make it into our houses, we are not there yet, and it should not be allowed to sail through. We should increase hours of the environmental sanitation or do it twice a month.

PLEASE HELP TO SHARE THIS!

You 've bn in shock as to how he fought ebola to a hurt. Now, ur BP has gone thru d roof wt this announcement. Sorry boy, Igbos are ingenious goal-setters and goal-getters.

Valstresser: Monthly sanitation is under concurrent list so is purely state affair nd not under exclusive list.

Can you please show us where in the 1999 constitution (as amended) that places monthly sanitation on the concurrent lst.
Thanks.

Meanwhile the Minister is right on cancelling the exercise, which was cluelessly introduced by General Muhammadu Buhari as part of his War Against Indiscipline (WAI) rather than ensure that LGAs do their assigned jobs of keeping common, public spaces clean.
This is the relevant extract from our constitution =>

CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA
1999

Schedules
Fourth Schedule
Functions of a Local Government Council

1. The main functions of a local government council are as follows:
.
.
.
.
(f) construction and maintenance of roads, streets, street lightings, drains and other public highways, parks, gardens, open spaces, or such public facilities as may be prescribed from time to time by the House of Assembly of a State;
(g) naming of roads and streets and numbering of houses;
(h) provision and maintenance of public conveniences, sewage and refuse disposal;

Source: http://www.waado.org/nigerdelta/documents/ConstitutionalMatters/1999Constitution/FourthSchedule.html

It is for this purpose and others that they (LGAs) each receive some N160 million from Abuja monthly and are expected to also get additional money from the state's IGR.

Is this not how it is done in those foreign, more "civilised" places where our leaders looters hide our money and even some "lucky" Nigerians do such street cleaner/sweeper work

The Minister is however wrong in suggesting Sanitary Inspectors (Wole Woles in yoruba) as the alternative. These LGA workers have no relationship with the senseless monthly environmental sanitation that we have been doing since General Muhammadu Buhari's days.

rman: Long over due....

It was introduced by the military and isn't really serving the purpose other than movement restrictions.

People should find a way to make their environment clean with government enforcement. Also government at LGA and state level should have a robust waste management system with trained professionals and we would not need FG to declare Sanitation days.

The fact that people are not moving doesn't mean they are cleaning their environment.
Yes trained officers instead of diz mumu Oyes nd ONo initiatives all over d place abusing the profession... The states with these quacks av got it all wrong..

Sanitation is about law enforcement and effective waste management system with good judicial system... Psweeeew... Gone are those days when San Inspectors are still San Inspectors..

What we need is not a cancellation of the Sanitation exercise. An addition of the sanitary inspectors will suffice to keep up the tempo and reenergize the monthly exercise. His proposal will be one step forward and ten steps backwards. MHO.

thank you jare.. What can they do when they are ill-staffed horribly than other professions.. The law made provision for a saniterian to 50people.. Now in LGAs.. Hardly you could get 10 Saniterians... And we are now talking about effectiveness here

Their work is to INSPECT and ensure markets, bukas, bars etc are in sanitary condition and do not pose a health HAZARD to the public.
You then have street sweepers, gutter cleaners etc engaged also by the LGA to clean PUBLIC spaces.
Re: Minister Of Health Calls For The Cancellation Of Environmental Sanitation by omokab: 5:43pm On Oct 03, 2014
What is the proplem with monthly sanitation?is it not helping the state to look clean except some other state which they are born to be dirty.The federal govt have no saying in the monthly sanitation because they are not funding it.so if they are ready to introduce sanitory inspection is a welcome idea it wil also help to control all type of dirty in each state.Meanwhile,monthly sanitaion is basically on waste evacuation while sanitory inspection is basically to checkmate all type of health hazards that may generate from uncleaniness.

even states that are born to be dirty like Ibadan are now clean with the help of effective sanitation of the recent government... so if the man want to add more inspectors, its long due... It is highly needed

It's a welcome idea. I thought the Minister had either seen it on my Facebook wall or someone who saw it had told him.
I made a serious case for the cancellation of the exercise two weekends ago, after I was told at AGOFURE Motors in Warri that I wouldn't be travelling till after 10 am because sanitation exercise was in place.
It's archaic and dumb to have such a policy in place. It may have worked during the Buhari/Idiagbon era when it was conceived, but we have moved on, and so.should our policies.
It's very old fashioned to bring a nation/state to a standstill for 3 hours once in a month for Environmental sanitation. Environmental sanitation is an everyday exercise.
Apart from some khaki guys mounting roadblocks here and there isn't much happening on these days.
It also encourages environmental abuse, as people indiscriminately litter their environment and then wait till a month's time when another . exercise takes place.
Federal and state ministries of Environment should collabo and train and equip environmental health officers who should go about to monitor our environment, and ensure appropriate sanctions are levied against offenders.
This exercise is long overdue for abolishment.
