Nigeria’s military on Friday dismissed claims that a man beheaded by Boko Haram fighters in the group’s latest video was an air force pilot in a fighter jet that went missing three weeks ago.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau had claimed in the footage obtained by AFP on Thursday that militants shot down the Alpha Jet and showed wreckage of an aircraft which included the Nigerian Air Force’s green and white roundel.

A man, wearing a camouflage print T-shirt and with a heavily bandaged hand in a sling, was seen later kneeling in front of an unmasked Boko Haram fighter in combat fatigues and saying in English that he was one of the pilots.

He appears to give his name, rank and date of birth but the video is inaudible. He is killed after he finishes speaking.

Asked directly about whether the man was an air force pilot, as claimed, spokesman Air Commodore Dele Alonge told AFP: “The man shown in the Boko Haram video is not our officer.

The picture of a man beheaded in the video is superimposed,” he said without elaborating. “Our plane is still missing and we are looking for it. Boko Haram is just making unfounded claims.”

AFP asked the same question to defence spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade, who announced last week that Shekau was dead.

DHQ spokesman, Major-General Chris Olukolade

He said: “No level or amount of barbaric display of bestial atrocities will distract the Nigerian military from sustaining the tempo of ongoing operations to decimate, degrade and bring the remnants of the terrorists already in disarray to due justice.

“The campaign against terror is still recording the expected result in the front. Nigerians should not despair,” he said in a text message that was repeated on his Twitter account.

Nigeria’s military has been under pressure to reverse Boko Haram territorial gains in three northeast states in recent months, with reports that soldiers have fled militant attacks and complaints about a lack of adequate weapons.

According to one security analyst who tracks the conflict, the Alpha Jet sent a signal that it had been hit and the two pilots’ families met air force officers in the days that followed and were told it had crashed.

The jet came down in the heart of rebel-held territory, making search and rescue impossible, he added.

In the video, Shekau is seen on the back of a pick-up truck firing a powerful anti-aircraft gun and boasting about other aircraft Boko Haram has shot down.

Can the military leaders respect the memory of Chimda Hedima , acknowledge his death and service for fatherland.

He paid the supreme price courageously and had no iota of fear despite the imminent painful death starring him in the face

May his soul RIP

Chris Oluklade's job has taken a huge transformation into a herculean task, just the way Reuben Abati's job did too.

He has to plaster up the dirty and muddy world of the NA.
Morale must be boosted and sustained at the expense of loosing personal integrity and respect.

Not an easy one I must admit.

Now Nigerian army is fighting the terror propaganda war the right way. There is no right and wrong in war. Every party to this battle feeds off what ever news that prevails on the media.
Nigerians need to understand that the sole objective is to defeat these terror groups. Whether the pilot was beheaded is not the issue..... the issue is that if Nigerians choose to propogate and promote the statements from the BH group....they win. If we stand by the Nigerian Army (the morale of the BH foot soilders drops).

Sometimes I ask, to whose advantage is the falsehood label being forced on the NA? whose interest does it serve? Young men are dying at the hot fronts and we type all manners of demoralising rubbish behind our screens.

This war is currently more of media propaganda than arms. Just a day after the news of the death of Shekau, lots of the foot soilders surrendered at different locations cos their morale is so media dependent.

All Nigerians need to stand by the Nigerian Army at this time and we must jointly echo their position on this war. This is not a time to be politically correct. Anyday we win the media war, the terror war is 75% won.

Highly predictable! Quick to deny, quick to churn out fallacies all in the name of boosting morale.

If only the boko animals could capture these ogas who seat at the comfort of their office, dish out atrocious orders and deny their fallen compatriots. If only they could be made to suffer same fate like this our brave men, then we Nigerians would also make statement denying them to be Nigerians. Esp this Lai Muhammad's cousin called Olukolade.

This guy paid the supreme price, i would rather no statement was made at all than denying this. I can only imagine how his family would be feeling right now, most importantly that the death of their son, father, brother, cousin was instead of being celeberated as a hero he was, but denied he was no1.
Brother, we Nigerians recognise and appreciate your contribution and the supreme price you paid towards making Nigeria a safe place for all. May your death never be in vain and may the good Lord comfort the bereaved.

I'm tired of of you guys'blackmailing us . I'm tired of you guys that are trying so hard to turn us into a Zombie. The beauty about propaganda is the ability to make it real. It's the ability to make it last. It's the ability to retain the original core while in the process of change.

Nigeria army lies incompetently. Their lies don't last more than 24hrs. Before coming out to lie to Nigerians they will never dot their i's and cross their t's.

If indeed war is won 75% by propaganda the Nigeria army propaganda team should be sack.
